@keyblok - I think that's just part of the humor of the Tony/Control sketches. They are supposed to come off as cornily acted and what not. At least, that's how I've always seen it. :)
@SaulMeyersz no man fry has to play houses older brother who is a better doctor would be perfect because fry in playing mycroft holmes in the new movie and also house is based of sherlock holmes
i've known who stephen fry is for years, i first saw hugh laurie on blackadder, then i found clips of fry and laurie on youtube, but i still have one question. what is this "house" that i keep hearing about?
@Stoptwistingmymelon House is a show on FOX network in the US. I've not personally seen the show, but it is supposed to be an excellent drama featuring Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House, an "unconvential and misanthropic medical genius" (Wikipedia).
@superhamzah85 i thought the exact same thing! that it was kids playing spies in an enid blyton book.
and murchison and control seem to be played by children dressed up in adult costumes acting at Spies, and control's office was the tree-house...
but if i remember serves me correctly then these sketches are a parody of boring spy telly shows, there were millions of 'em at the time, in which actors who were playing the spy characters weren't really engaging with their characters, wooden... hazy
Yeah I read that elsewhere. Before my time, although I have occassionally been a victim to such television in the daylight hours on several a sick day.
It just shows how brilliant the sketch is, parodies are by definition understood to be funny when one is quite familiar with the source material. Fry and Laurie just need to converse with one another for guaranteed brilliance!
These are amazing! I have some on DVD but there are far too many of them to buy all. I do watch them because of Hugh Laurie, but I liked him in Jeeves and Wooster even before House =)
Oh no. It's gotten to the point where every single morning when 11 o'clock rolls around, I have to have a cup of coffee. Too bad Hugh Laurie's not bringing it...

Forgive me for being stupid, but I'm not sure I'm getting the joke here. Are they talking in that stilted way because they're being wire-tapped or am I not getting a reference?
They're making fun of grom and dry Cold War television shows like "Callan" and "TInker, Tailor, Soldier Spy." They're trying to be ridiculously nice and also very simple.
Gosh, I love Stephen as Control. I realize a large portion of the people who watch old "Fry and Laurie" clips on YouTube are doing so because of Hugh Laurie; probably after first seeing him on "House". But personally, I'm here because of Stephen Fry. The man is impossibly delightful and lovely.
lol, yes, that's exactly how i rediscovered them. but i knew that show already from my english-class some years ago where we had a dialogue taken from that show that made me search for the clip that dialogue was taken from. never found that particular clip tho... it was about some teenager who skipped school for like a year and said he was gonna top himself as soon as he's finished with his videogame.
@saytheremeg I watch these clips because of Stephen Fry. Discovered him with QI. All the seasons are on youtube. I just wish it was the same for Fry and Laurie.
@saytheremeg Well Yes and now... kind of annoying to be put in to a 'group' of people i think Hugh and Steven are just as good, I love Hugh for his Blues music, Hugh himself and House, Steven for the many things I LOVE the Harry Potter audiobooks read by him and QI, Favouris things he has done, don't go assuming everyone only likes Laurie because of house.
I wish they would have cut away to Stephen after Hugh delivered that line... I wonder if he could keep a straight face. There's absolutely no way I could have.
Stephen Fry is more or less naked in the new Sherlock Holmes movie. He plays Sherlock's older brother, Mycroft.
He calls Sherlock "Sherley".

I love these sketches, one of my favourites routines in Fry and Laurie.
But I really don't know why?! Is it a parody of something?
I sometimes think it's the secret service as a kids TV show.
Or perhaps saying every single syllable as if it were somehow restricted information, and worded carefully.
