  • Stephen Fry is more or less naked in the new Sherlock Holmes movie. He plays Sherlock's older brother, Mycroft.

    He calls Sherlock "Sherley".

  • "..are rather expensive to buy''oh dear".....

  • BO!

  • AH!

  • I am not a Russian spy, cross my heart and hope to die!

    LOL!!

  • I've just been to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

That film would've been an awful lot shorter and easier to follow if they'd used Stephen's method of finding secret agents.

  • "The machines are rather expensive to buy-"

    "OH DEAR."

I laughed so hard at that bit XD

  • phew...

  • When you tell a fiiiiiib...

  • "well, that seems to prove it."

    "Really?"

    "Yes, Susan, really."

    LOL XD

  • Laurie is surely not House, This character fits him a lot better. And Fry as Control is hillarious.

  • Just call house, he will know if he is a russian spi.

  • "But unfortunately they are rather expensive to buy--"

    "Oh dear."

    Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha.

  • Why are they speaking so robotic?

  • @keyblok - I think that's just part of the humor of the Tony/Control sketches. They are supposed to come off as cornily acted and what not. At least, that's how I've always seen it. :)

  • i want to see fry on house as a rival doctor

  • @SaulMeyersz they better run.. House is going for it's last season :/

  • @SaulMeyersz no man fry has to play houses older brother who is a better doctor would be perfect because fry in playing mycroft holmes in the new movie and also house is based of sherlock holmes

  • i've known who stephen fry is for years, i first saw hugh laurie on blackadder, then i found clips of fry and laurie on youtube, but i still have one question. what is this "house" that i keep hearing about?

  • @Stoptwistingmymelon House is a show on FOX network in the US. I've not personally seen the show, but it is supposed to be an excellent drama featuring Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House, an "unconvential and misanthropic medical genius" (Wikipedia).

  • @summertimeposse i see. not usually a fan of dramas but i might check it out

  • @Stoptwistingmymelon it's a drama, plus Hugh's sarcastic humour. It's one of the greatest series I've seen in my life.

  • Phew!

  • GASP!!! American goods cost to much? Shocker.

  • So this is where Richard Ayoade gets his shtick from.

  • "I am not a Russian spy, cross my heart and hope to die."

  • OH DEAR!!!!!

  • Stephen Fry is lovely and witty. Hugh Laurie is odd-looking and has the BEST expressions. They make a beautiful comedy duo.

    I love them BOTH.

  • Fry was great on Kingdom, I loved that show.

  • "Gosh, how ingenious, but at the same time how quite simple."

"Sadly enough, the machines are rather expensive to buy."

    "OH DEAR."

  • Awww Control, I love you and want to give you a big hug!

  • Stephen Fry looks somehow, bizarrely lovely at 2:20 :)

  • I like the fact that they're spies and they're so boring... lol

  • I like Hughs ill-fitting suit

  • I've shown Control and Tony to my friends before, and they just don't get it, but for some reason it kills me every time.

  • Sooo funny and adorable. That "cross my heart and hope to die" part was too cute xD

But could you explain to a german if that "Bo" Control always says has any meaning at all? XD

  • that seems to prove it right susie LOL

  • You can see where Mitchell & Webb got a few ideas from.

  • @Rottenandy Yes, but then, Fry and Laurie had a massive influence on the British comedy scene

  • I love these sketches, one of my favourites routines in Fry and Laurie.

But I really don't know why?! Is it a parody of something?

I sometimes think it's the secret service as a kids TV show.

Or perhaps saying every single syllable as if it were somehow restricted information, and worded carefully.

  • @superhamzah85 i thought the exact same thing! that it was kids playing spies in an enid blyton book.

and murchison and control seem to be played by children dressed up in adult costumes acting at Spies, and control's office was the tree-house...

but if i remember serves me correctly then these sketches are a parody of boring spy telly shows, there were millions of 'em at the time, in which actors who were playing the spy characters weren't really engaging with their characters, wooden... hazy

  • @MrTonyInchpractice

Yeah I read that elsewhere. Before my time, although I have occassionally been a victim to such television in the daylight hours on several a sick day.

It just shows how brilliant the sketch is, parodies are by definition understood to be funny when one is quite familiar with the source material. Fry and Laurie just need to converse with one another for guaranteed brilliance!

  • @BlackCousins4life err, there are only four DVDs, one for each series, and they're very cheap on Amazon (box set of all four available as well).

  • These are amazing! I have some on DVD but there are far too many of them to buy all. I do watch them because of Hugh Laurie, but I liked him in Jeeves and Wooster even before House =)

  • This sketch is based on "the spy who came in from the cold" and "call for the dead" intelligent humour, thats why I love fry and laurie

  • "Sadly enough, the machines are rather expensive to buy."

    "OH DEAR."

    ...

    I adore these two.

    Comical geniuses they are. :D

  • When Hugh says "Are you a Russian Spy" it reminds me when he said "are you a german spy?" in blackadder.

  • "I am not a Russian spy, cross my heart and hope to die" Lol.

  • hehe Stephen in drag is SEX lolx

I luv control and tony <3...the last one was so sad =(

...I really have to start watching these again...x

  • Oh no. It's gotten to the point where every single morning when 11 o'clock rolls around, I have to have a cup of coffee. Too bad Hugh Laurie's not bringing it...

    Bo.

  • I love Tony and Control. I was so sad when Tony was fired.

  • I am not a Russian spy, cross my heart and hope to die haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahah

  • stephen's face at 1:54 BRILLIANT

  • This is the film 'Salt' (2010) in a nutshell

  • is edna fry a real person?

  • They're making fun of grom and dry Cold War television shows like "Callan" and "TInker, Tailor, Soldier Spy." They're trying to be ridiculously nice and also very simple.

  • Hugh looks like Bertie Wooster in this video ^^

  • Hugh <333

    Stephen :D

I just love them in tony and control !

  • I love Tony & Control, it's one of my favourite parts of fry & lauire

  • "Oh dear"

    phahaha love themmm

  • 0:00 IT'S EDNA!! xD

  • WONDERFUL! I love Stephen's voice!

  • Comment removed

  • Stephen Fry is pretty much the guy of my dreams. Too bad I'm a girl.

  • "I am not a Russian spy, cross my heart and hope to die" may be my new favorite quote of

    forever

  • Haha, mine too. And I use it too... at all kinds of unappropriate moments...

  • "Control?"

    "Susie?"

Gosh, I love Stephen as Control. I realize a large portion of the people who watch old "Fry and Laurie" clips on YouTube are doing so because of Hugh Laurie; probably after first seeing him on "House". But personally, I'm here because of Stephen Fry. The man is impossibly delightful and lovely.

  • lol, yes, that's exactly how i rediscovered them. but i knew that show already from my english-class some years ago where we had a dialogue taken from that show that made me search for the clip that dialogue was taken from. never found that particular clip tho... it was about some teenager who skipped school for like a year and said he was gonna top himself as soon as he's finished with his videogame.

  • @saytheremeg I have a feeling that lots of people, like me, were brought in by Hugh, but Stayed for Hugh's and Stephen's chemistry!

  • @saytheremeg I watch these clips because of Stephen Fry. Discovered him with QI. All the seasons are on youtube. I just wish it was the same for Fry and Laurie.

  • @saytheremeg I got here because of Stephen Fry.

  • @saytheremeg Fry was magnificent as Oscar Wilde too (I also knew him even before House M.D. came out - but both men are incredible:)

  • @saytheremeg Well Yes and now... kind of annoying to be put in to a 'group' of people i think Hugh and Steven are just as good, I love Hugh for his Blues music, Hugh himself and House, Steven for the many things I LOVE the Harry Potter audiobooks read by him and QI, Favouris things he has done, don't go assuming everyone only likes Laurie because of house.

  • Test

  • Boh!

  • Omg, I cried with laughter watching this

  • "I am not a Russian spy, cross my heart and hope to die."

Ahaha! Stephen Fry is so adorable! ;D

  • i love the way hugh says "phew"

  • i'm in love with stephen fry.... if only he was straight.... or i was a gay male,,,, but alas.... are fates are not to cross...

  • Yes Susan, really.

  • hahahaha love the discussion stylexD

  • they rock

  • argh, I hate these characters.

But of course, that's a kind of compliment, and I actually really love this show.

    Thanks for posting!

  • I love these sketches. My very favorite line "Oh! Hello Control!"

  • is that hugh laurie?

  • yes

  • Yup... hence the name of the series: "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" (the other's name is Stephen Fry)

  • yes

  • sussy XDDD

  • Lovely and funny sketch.

  • "Well the thing Oh Christ! I've left the iron on!"

  • By the end their deliveries are so cute

  • OH DEAR. :D

  • hugh laurie in this sketch looks JUST like john cleese, but with lighter colored hair

  • hugh DOES look like john cleese. weird...

  • Maybe if John Cleese was thinner.

  • I love the way Stephen says 'fib'. LOL.

  • 8'D Hilarious. These guys are brilliant!

  • lolol robot control!,lol

  • Boh! I posted twice! Dashed rummy of me.

  • Oh dear!

  • when you tell a fiiiiiib...

    hahaha <3 these guys XD

  • Damn! Someone's already made that comparison!

  • Tony = Moss from the IT Crowd

  • What?!

  • You obviously haven't seen The IT Crowd on Channel 4 have you?

  • i love that show :D

  • He really does sound like Moss!! :O

  • I was thinking the exact same thing!

  • "I am not a Russian spy. Cross my heart and hope to die."

hahahahaha. I love Control and Tony.

  • I love it when Fry says "Sadly enough, the machines are rather expensive"

and Laurie responds with "OH DEAR". lol

    It's around 1.40

  • I wish they would have cut away to Stephen after Hugh delivered that line... I wonder if he could keep a straight face. There's absolutely no way I could have.

  • I wish they would have cut to Stephen after Hugh delivers that line... I wonder if he was able to keep a straight face. I know I couldn't.

  • Why do I always have the sudden urge to hum the 'Get Smart' theme tune when I watch Tony and Control?

    "That seems to prove it."

    "Really?"

    "Yes, Susan, really!"

  • "Control..."

    "Susie?"

    xDDDD

I love this sketch, Tony and Control are so funny!!

  • hahahaha

  • xD "I am not a Russian spy, cross my heart and hope to die."

  • Size of Stephen's hands!!:P

  • I like Tony and Control, they're cute! Always so polite :D

  • wonderul satire.

  • Their way of speaking! It's SO awesome! Can't get enough of their Britishness!

  • this american approves of this sketch! Its not like my approval is needed or anything... but I still love it!

  • Gosh. How ingenious. Love the way he says it!

  • "Well, that seems to prove it."

    "Really?"

    "Yes, Susan, really."

This sketch was really funny. Ca´n't understand why I didn´t look at it earlier. Both act brilliant when they non-acting.

  • lol love the monotone. XD

  • OH DEAR.

  • "That's the truth!"

    "Ooooh!!"

  • Listen in the first twenty seconds for a hilarious cackle in the audience.

As an amateur actor, I love when Tony arbitrarily steps on Control's lines or lets whole pauses go by without coming in.

  • This is my favourite recurring sketch, awesome!

  • I love the line "Phew." He says it so mundane it's great.

  • Love the way this is so hammed up and over-acted. Just brilliant.

  • "Phew"

  • So delighfully ridiculous...

  • oh christ i've left the iron on! lol!

  • -that seems to prove it.

    -Really?

    -yes susan!

    LMAO!

  • Hugh's simple "Ah" is so brilliant! I love the light too!

  • "Gosh. How ingenious. But at the same time, how quite simple."

  • "Sadly enough, the machines are rather expensive to buy-"

    "Oh dear."

    lmao

  • "control?"

    "susy?" LOL!!!

  • Pretty good deadpan on hugh laurie's part. :D

  • HAHAHA! "Well now, control. You musn't say that just to spare me the paperwork."

  • I'd better go and telephone the relevant authorities!

  • i kno its not part of the sketch but i love the bit at the start where he's dressed up and goes 'christ ive left the iron on!' loooooooooooooooool

  • "I am not a Russian spy

Cross my heart and hope to die"

    -- this hillarious punchline! :]]]

  • "I am not a Russian spy

Cross my heart and hope to die"

    Love how it rhymes. lololol

  • the bit at 1:49 where stephen points and says 'but tony..' made me faint with laughter

  • i love control and tony. hugh reminds me of richard ayoade here actually.

control and tony are based on something else aren't they, what is it?

  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Sandbaggers and other 1970's Cold War based shows

  • excellent, thank you :)

  • Bohhhh!

  • Tony and Control pwn

  • LOL! Their deadpan delivery hides some underlying subtleties that few actors could reproduce.

  • HAHHAahaha! :)

  • "Gosh. How ingenious. But at the same time, how quite simple."

  • Haha! I love it!

  • beautifully brilliant and hilarious!
