If you consider problem solving as intelligence, then ferrets rank above cats and dogs, and into the range of small primates. However, if you consider memory to be intelligence , then ferrets rank lower than dogs but above cats. Some people equate intelligence with communication though.
What I don't get...ferrets are 100% to own, you can't even get a permit to own one. But you CAN get a permit to own, big cats (lions/tigers), cobras, wolves, piranha, burmese pythons, all those animals can be detrimental on the environment and people! Also, domesticated ferrets usually die within 7 days of being released because they don't know how to fend for themselves, many die of starvation!

I live in Scotland and keep ferrets they are amazing animals. About them being a danger to other species,aint cats more of a threat.Everyone knows cats will bring "presents" to their owners,mice ,small chicks etc. I think they aslo did a lot of damage to idigenous speciecs in New Zealand, so why not ban cats in California and Hawai. C'mon the ferrets. Legalize them.

Aint it funny that California bans ferrets as pets, But you can who a tiger,Puma, Mountain Lion, and even a wolf without a problem. This is crazy and in New York City the health dept. has ban them also for health reason. I guess those 4 pounds rats running the streets and night and in restaruant are much cleaner and safer animals. Black plague ring a bell.

Stupid ass Fish and Game department! Since most pet stores and such get their ferrets from Marshall, they are all NEUTERED BEFORE SHIPMENT. They are domesticated and could not survive in the wild (for very long) and they bite, but it's not to rip anyone's fingers off! They're PLAYING. Their skin is thick and tough, so when they play rough with each other, they don't know that it can hurt people if they play the same way! Ugh. I hate people. I will never move to California as long as I live.

Actually, ferrets are quite smart. It all depends on how you view a measure of intelligence. If you consider problem solving as intelligence, then ferrets rank above cats and dogs, and into the range of small primates. However, if you consider memory to be intelligence , then ferrets rank lower than dogs but above cats. Some people equate intelligence with communication though.

What I don't get...ferrets are 100% to own, you can't even get a permit to own one. But you CAN get a permit to own, big cats (lions/tigers), cobras, wolves, piranha, burmese pythons, all those animals can be detrimental on the environment and people! Also, domesticated ferrets usually die within 7 days of being released because they don't know how to fend for themselves, many die of starvation!

My only complaint about ferrets are if you leave your keys out, and your ferret is out, you'll never find your keys again.

Ferrets could cause problems with small animals. They love to eat birds rabbits and other small animals but tend not to survive on there own in the wild.

My experience is no means try harder, you just haven't found the right way to convince mom to let you do it. But as long as they see the benefit of doing what mom says, they are very easy to train. You just have to make it fun and worthwhile for them.

LOL Even people bite hahaha I use to own a pet shop and I sold a few! They are great. They need to have their sent gland removed but other than that its the same as a cat. You can save money buy having the sent gland removed the same time as having it fixed. Give them plenty of toys and they will bite less than kittens!

Ferrets are just like dogs and cats, they can bite, miss behave, behave, shit and piss, stink and be totally cute at the same time. I have 5 ferrets and they will only bite you if you accidently hurt them or they are in a funny playful mood. The can make you bleed but so can cats and dogs.
