i mean, i do think that IN THE END, it's an awful choice to join the military regardless. but it's important to understand what makes people do it and joke/argue about that and not just reduce it to some simplistic "they're assholes/morons".
same shit with pedophiles, drug addicts, etc.
and especially considering some of doug's other material (e.g. when he talks about getting rid of all the assholes on the world), one would think he would get that.
i really like doug but the way he often simplifies stuff probably does more harm than good in my opinion.
e.g. this thing here about people having a choice... he doesn't mention the fact that it's exactly because people want to do something more honorable that they join the military. with all the shit from FOX & co, how could they even realize that they're doing even more harm in the name of the military than if they fuck people at home?
and many more aspects like that. life isn't that simple.
I served in the military for 6 years and this guy is 100% right. when people say "support the troops" they don't give a damn about the individual soldier (alot of them) they just wanna say that to make themselves feel better for some stupid reason. People in small towns who would normally call the cops on me for being in their lily white neighborhoods are kissing my ass while i was in uniform. Alot of people were cool but the military houses alot of douche bags.
sorry doug but i dont agree for once. i can never be pro-war. i'd rather the psychopathic maniac let loose, the wouldn't even touch a fraction of the lives war ruins. killing thousands of people should not be a job you or anyone else are proud of.
it seems to be popular to be sycophantic towards the army and blame the lower working class who claim benefits for everything. in reality when "our boys" come back from afghan they start kicking the shit out of everyone in this country... "this countrys goin to the dogs" "i don't pay my taxes just so dole scrounging scum can spend it on drink and drugs" "help the heroes, respect to the troops well done our boys" makes me sick
@ChuckNorrisKratosLOL I am with you 100% on that. I got constantly thanked while out in public whenever I had my bdu's still on from getting off of work and I fucking hated every time they did that. They don't know me at all, what I do, and as a collective of what the military does, it obviously has nothing to do with what they think they should be thanking me for. So I just feel disgusted that this is what passes for fucking patriotism. So sad and pathetic.
and i was in the national guard, i couldnt have handled the regular army i could only imagine how awful that must be. alot of people just do it for job tho i didnt have some cupcake suburban parents to pay my way through college and buy my first car or whatever now i got 20k in my bank. lamest people ever tho some of them no different than livin with a bunch of cops. fuck them.
i was in the army for 5 years and i'll tell you right now 90% of the people with high rank were lame-o dickheads. those are the same people that have been in for 10-15-20 years nobody cool could stand to be in that long so you gotta bunch of arrogant fags in charge basically and the only thing they care about is looking good to eachother and jerking eachother off you'll see more asskissing in the military than anywhere else in the world i guarantee it. terrible experience.
@shawndw1000 He's not shitting on America. He's shitting on one particular aggressive asshole, and making the point that not all soldiers are in it for the same motivations. Be careful not to assume generalizations. You might just end up making yourself look stupid.
@rmcdaniel423 that could of been said about any profession...doesn't have to pick out soldiers. As a former Marine, u don't have to tell me that....I knew alot of guys that were just there for the college benefits. They never lasted long in boot camp.
@shawndw1000 It's true that assholes exist in any profession, but his story was about a specific personal experience. One that involved a soldier. A soldier who was an asshole. Which seemed ironic to Stanhope, because we are constantly told that we "have to support the troops". And anyone that goes to see Doug Stanhope should expect to see irreverent irony as part of his act. Even if the audience happens to be other soldiers. Your rancor is misguided. Just saying.
@shawndw1000 Whatever dude. He was pointing out to the military specifically. You Soldiers aren't special and aren't gods given gift. You can can handle a JOKE or two
@DisturbedAndSadistic Sorry to tell you, the song is a demo which was never released officially and is now removed from the web, except for here on YouTube uploaded by an American. Search for Rambokniv remix Staal, and you'll find it.
We have a volunteer military, and they know what they are getting into when they enlist. As stanhope says, there are some who are just psycho, but overall I respect them. They put themselves on the line for what they see as a higher calling, personal or otherwise. Not here to fight about it, just voicing an opinion.
We get that attitude over here in the UK too, apparently everyone who went to the other side of the world to blow the shit out of people we had even less business than America did fucking with, every single one of those guys is a hero. All that attitude does is cheapen the credit due to anyone who actually does something heroic. You just have to admit, there are arseholes in the military too. My military friends are nice guys/girls and they're the first ones to admit it.
@onewolfseye If you don't mind my purposeful run-on sentence, allow me to define that. "Support the troops" means "I support the actions of the troops that were sent by their corrupt government for malignant purpose to another country they don't belong in which they may shoot anyone they're told to by people that shouldn't be in power because USA is a machine of destruction that cannot be stopped and we will continue murdering because POWER is law."
@Viktir666 id love you t say that to someone in the military, but youre too much of a fairy too say anything to their face and hide behind youre computer in your moms basement.
@doc3124 I did say that to multiple military fairies. Nothing happened except them getting loud and pissy and telling me I'm an asshole. What are you going to do tough guy? Going to kick my ass over the internet? You know nothing of the person on the other side of the computer, don't be so quick to think military slaves are masters of martial arts.
The whole scetch was funny but Doug really came into his own defending his opinion that the brainless fucks that do operate in the military have a choice.
As a casual observer I find much of the millitary complex lacking in basic human understanding, I feel for anyone who is a part of this system but see the bastardisation of an individual as a thing to be pitied. One must lead by example not rule by threat of destruction. This is not a personal attack but an attack on the doctrine adopted by many in order to feel they are part of some acceptable pogrom designed to make them feel safe. We forgive and understand, hope you will find peace.
Additionally, a decent enough case can be made that our army is more of a mercenary army than a voluntary one, and reinstating the draft may actually discourage superfluous wars as the children of the wealthy too would have to start bearing the cost.
@xjtbarnesx Problem with that, during the Vietnam war the rich had plenty of ways to get out. One positive was that people took college seriously (get good grades or do summer school is significantly less scary then get good grades or go to fucking war). Draft would end up only forcing the poor, because the rich would find ways to get out of it. It would however get people to seriously reconsider when to support a war and when not to.
We haven't fought a real war since WW2. That was a war that Soldiers truly fought for our safety. The bullshit in the middle east is just that, complete and utter pointless bullshit.
I have respect for soldiers when they are smart enough to know that the war they are in now is complete bullshit and meaningless, but for those stupid trigger happy redneck assholes I can give a shit if they get killed. Fuck'em.
clearly some truth but not a popular thing to joke about ...backfired...heckler with cheers backing him. And he said 1994 not 1984...oh wait. 1984. nothing intended there but it's funny. anyways fuck the war, suppor the troops unless they're in your face over and over and live next door then fuck the fucking cunt.
I hate those fucking troops that automatically think they're better than you because they joined the Army and you're a citizen. They can go fuck themselves.
@CertifiedGooner729 fuck soldier worship."hey asshole you're not protecting my freedom" in the middle east or afghanistan.you're a pawn in a pointless political struggle between who's the toughest on "terror"
I've never been able to understand hecklers. Even if the heckler has something that shut the comedian up, the guy has a damn microphone: he can just speak over you.
Hm, well he kinda has a bit of a point. I am in the Army and I agree that not all soldiers are nice (From my experiences I see alot of ego driven "tough guy" in your face marines more than anything.) But I can also say that many soldiers don't do it for the college money.. It is a good bonus but I must say that at least 90% of the soldiers I have met so far love the USA and want to be a part of the team that protects the people. Watching 9/11 unfold was a wake up call for some people.
If you think murder is better way of making money as apposed to stealing. Then you have no idea what the word MORAL means. The concept of property is nothing compared to the right to live. Stealing bread to feed your child as apposed to murdering the father of another is righteous, the military does not teach diplomacy...only how to kill without conscience.
I saw this guy on Charlie Brooker's screenwipe I literally agree with everything this guy says. Sometimes only people like this give me hope that not everyone is a complete utter fucking tool who agrees wth everything the majority of the retarded population accepts. MOAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
@pinglauwa No, a car doesnt need wings and this video doesnt need rubbish metal music. I appreciate that some race cars may in fact have wings, but I'm talking about 'wings' in the sense of being on a plane and helping to facilitate flight.
@eezysqueezy I know what you're talking about. I was making a joke. I agree that this doesn't need metal music. But on the contrary, I *do* think cars would be cool if they could fly.
@eezysqueezy Well, If we could utilize wings as opposed to burning fossil fuels and polluting our air, then I suppose cars do need wings. So I'll take your comment as a compliment towards that awesome song.
@eezysqueezy A car with wings would fucking rule! Especially if they had missiles attached to the wings to fire upon anyone who doesn't believe in the same things your country does. GO USA!?
I support people's right to donate to the Iraq war cause, even though I know it's mass murder. All I ask is that they extend me the same respect to withhold money if that's my preference.
If they don't, then they're just an immoral asshole, pure and simple.
a troop's good intentions are overridden by the government's bad motives. If you lie and tell someone to kill someone else for you to "protect america", and they do it with that intention. Does it make a difference to anything?
Its like saying "but I didn't know I bought a stolen car", when you're arrested for possession of stolen property. They bought it b/c they didn't check. Just like all the troops in Iraq weren't politically active before enlisting.
@AClRCLEOFLlGHT How many 18 yr olds are politically active? Not many. What are u doing to stop the war u armchair politician. Ppl like u complain but wouldn't sacrifice anything to stop the government.
@tuopvm : Right you are. Not many 18 yr olds are politically active. Not even the troops themselves. People protecting this country who don't even know what they're protecting, allow themselves to become the government's hired mercenaries, rather than the country's troops. And soldiers who die in Iraq who die, die for their ignorance. I don't humor the thought that they're dieing for freedom because I know better.
And don't assume, it makes you look stupid. You don't know me.
@AClRCLEOFLlGHT "you don't know me" u definitely are of this sorry ass, lazy generation. U watch to much Springer. U say it the fate of he country doesn't rest on your shoulders then whose does it? So marching on Washington is useless but bitching on Youtube is the answer. You're a clown.
@tuopvm : I leave you with the last word. How can I possible compete with that? Someone insulting me for not doing anything and just sitting my lazy ass in my chair, while they sit in their chair to argue with me and insult me. You are fucking epic.
@AClRCLEOFLlGHT Epic? Aren't u a little old for that? Yes I'm on youtube but unlike u I'm smart enough to realize that talking shit on here means nothing u however seem to believe your bs statements make an impact. Kill yourself
@tuopvm : Unfortunately you're not smart enough that Youtube is a website designed for people to talk about their opinions. Liked opinions = good. Disliked opinions = talking shit. You need to log out for a while if you think the only opinions that have a right to be expressed are those you agree with. Try to avoid calling yourself "smart" in the future, because you're fucking stupid.
@tuopvm : you know, I was kinda hoping that in between your personal attacks somewhere there'd be an actual argument towards anything I've said. People like you don't have anything to add to adult conversation topics, so you just go around reading comments and insult people who's ideas you don't agree with. Don't talk to me about jokes, your entire side in this has been empty.
@tuopvm : If the best argument you have towards my stances on these subjects has to do with my personal life or other personal assumptions your pathetic mind can muster up, just fucking say so. Or don't... we can figure it out either way.
@tuopvm : I am smart enough to realize that marching on washington isn't the answer. Its not even "an" answer. I wasn't born into an era where the fate of this country rests on my shoulders. I was born into an era long after the people had any power, and all your ideas of sacrifice and choice are just illusions. The fact you speak about the "government" like its the problem just shows your ignorance.
You speak with conviction, but your conviction is a lie.
@AClRCLEOFLlGHT Teachers on youtube. Ppl have no wisdom they just repeat others. Let me guess you have wisdom. You're enlightening ppl. LOL. I doubt you'll launch the revolution from you're chair. LMAO
I made money for college from something called a "Pell Grant." Of course, Uncle Sam doesn't care so much for young white from the south, so I had to supplement it with said "full-time job."
I never said stealing wasn't better than murder. I said stealing was not a viable means for paying for college. I also never said I supported the troops, I said I do not support this juvenile message.
Regardless of whether you consider them honorable or "defending our freedom", the fact of the matter is is that Troops are legally hired guns for the government's interests. That's all. Even I say it and I have family members that have served.
@umorsom Anyone that would steal for college is a selfish dumbass... If you have low to no income you can get government grants. You could probably get enough money to get your associates for free. Obama is that cause for the increase in student loans and grant money. And he did it without puting us in more debt. The fuckin republicans didn't do this because they would rather ensure their corporate buddies get huge fucking bonuses. Fuck the republicans and fuck all the pussy democrats. Fuck War!
@umorsom I don't think that's the point he was making. His point was extremely shortsighted. The audience member was, correctly, explaining that for the poor and disenfranchised youth, the military is effectively their only hope of college. The American dream is bullshit, work ethic is irrelevant, and saying that the kids who join the army to pay for school are endorsing our nation's wars is exactly like saying that sweatshop workers should just quit if they don't like their work conditions.
@xjtbarnesx NO. That is exactly what the sweatshop workers should do. No sweatshop workers, no sweatshops. If you believe in your convictions enough you stand up for them no matter the cost. Joining the armed forces, especially in times of war is basically showing support for the war.
@jargonscott That's probably the most profoundly ignorant statement I've come across so far this year. Short of recommending you a long reading list (that you wouldn't read), I literally cannot imagine a response that would lend you adequate perspective on this.
Maybe don't publicly admit to blaming the Jews for not "standing up for their convictions" in Nazi Germany, the Irish for the Great Famine, and so on accordingly - your peers won't receive that too well. Enjoy your privilege, asshole.
Actually a BBC study showed that not only are sweatshops not as bad as they are portrayed but they are WAY better than the alternatives (in most cases thats slavery, war or child prositution).
Good point. I personally know some fucksticks that joined up so they could "get some".I get some, it's called pussy. Maybe it's better they are in the asshole of the planet. Fucking tools...
this is true. out of the few marines i've met, only like 3, they all had a huge ego and came across as the douchiest dudes i've ever met. I understand everyone is different but it's just the mindset that is instilled in them that they are better than everyone else because of however many weeks of bootcamp they went too. I also understand that too fight in a war you have to have this mindest, but I also believe that you should be able to turn it off when your around normal fuckin people.
hell yeah...i'm on my 4th deployment and i just talked to my wife tonight about what irreconcilable douche bags many of our "professional soldiers" are. you wanna talk shit to Doug? ask someone who's been there!
@MyOroInvictus The world is a fucked up place. I'm trying to live as seems right to me, & I know you're trying to do the same. Hope there can be peace between us, despite our different views. I'll leave it at that, and wish you a good day.
@MyOroInvictus Cut off your head & mount it on a post by the front doors of Walmart as a warning to potential transgressors. Ha ha ha! I understand that stealing from a big corporation dilutes the negative effect on any individual, but it's still wrong. The way corporations conduct business is a completely separate issue. I love the USA; only wish that it could be a place where decent folks didn't have to worry about carjacking, home invasions, rape, theft, murder, etc.
@MyOroInvictus That's my opinion on pickpockets. Shoplifters are scum, too. The store owner is trying to make an honest living, & the thief doesn't care anything about whether the store makes a profit and the store owner can afford rent and groceries. I say beat them to death & throw them in the dumpster behind the store; they don't deserve a funeral. If consequences for crime were more severe, there would be less crime. I don't believe in repeat offenders. Once is already too much.
@MyOroInvictus A friend's car broke down; 2 men approached & acted like they wanted to help, then shoved my friend against the car & took his wallet. Those men should be hung by the balls & used for pinatas. My buddy was down on his luck & they made it worse. The thieves were beyond worthless--they were like negative numbers, so I wouldn't worry about karma there: it would make the world better to exterminate them. Jail is no deterrent for some people--it's like sending them to summer camp
@MyOroInvictus Hell yes I'd kill someone for stealing from me. Anyone who breaks into my house is getting pumped full of lead. If I could have caught the people who broke into my truck, they'd be dead. Stealing should not be tolerated, period. Murder is the killing of an innocent person; the killing of a scumbag is just karma. I'm not interested in your philosophy if it condones theft. You can think whatever you want of me. I don't step on anyone's toes unless he steps on mine.
@morgmagg Lol killing someone who steals..... You think you're above the law?
Taking one crime to try and straighten out another doesn't make you any more of a saint then the person who robbed you.
In fact people usually steal because they can't afford something. Because they were less fortunate then others to get a proper education & make money. People can't help where they were born and who they were brought up by.
@HrcWhitey I think the laws are wrong. Getting rid of a criminal is not a crime--it's retribution. I say that if someone can't get something without stealing it, he should find a way to get by without it. If he can't get by, that's tough. A lot of people steal because they're just pieces of shit, & spend the money on crack. You can think whatever you want of me, & that won't change my opinion. I'm sick of the direction this country's going in, where criminals have more rights than victims.
@MrBaphomet666 I'm for freedom to do whatever you want if it's not hurting someone else. I don't think a murderer deserves to live when his victim is dead--it's not fair; he has given up his right to be free & his right to live. The government isn't tough enough in some ways, while it's overly restrictive in others; locking up people for drugs is insane, & I feel the same about giving a thief free food for life. Just opinions from my perspective--have dealt with the aftermath of burglary 4X.
@MrBaphomet666 But kids 13 and up have at least some understanding of ethics. I've seen bad kids grow into bad adults, so I'd say nip it in the bud at that point. The threat of death is a powerful deterrent for anyone who fears death. It's important for someone to understand the consequences. But someone who's mentally ill & rapes & kills a girl & doesn't understand the consequences should still be killed; get rid of that fucker!
@MrBaphomet666 Cut his nuts off & make him eat them; say, "If you're hungry, eat those." Just kidding. You're talking about a gray area. Kids do not understand consequences; I'd say put the kid on a prison farm & let him find out what's involved in producing food; at least he won't starve, & he'll learn the value of work. I hope that in the USA, people are compassionate enough not to let a kid starve; charity could help there; in other countries I have no experience.
As a troop I completely agree with Doug, some of us are assholes. It seems like everyone either acts like we all walk on water or they act like we kill babies. Neither is true(at least not for me). You don't have to hug me or salute me if you see me walking in the airport. You don't have to thank me. Uncle Sam thanks me every 1st and 15th. You walking up to me only makes me uncomfortable. Not that I don't appreciate it. Anyway it's nice to hear someone speak their mind :]
I can't believe people are questioning the right to bear arms in the comments. A gun gives you a better chance against a criminal. And if your own government is playing the role of criminal, at least you can make a stand instead of being led away like a sheep. This country is really going to hell. I'm not here to argue; anything anyone could say against the 2nd amendment is a waste of words. Most people just don't respect the Constitution anymore, if they did they would vote Libertarian.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree with Doug on many topics, but don't agree with the idea of stealing to pay for college. I think all thieves should be killed; there would be a lot less theft if people knew they would be killed if caught. And I think the worse the crime, the worse the punishment should be. If someone is a rapist/murderer, feed him feet-first through a meat grinder, or feed him to alligators, & televise it. Decent folks should not have to worry about criminals. Don't just punish, get rid of them.
@morgmagg In a good society, people wouldn't have to steal (watch Zeitgeist 2). Anyway, the point Doug is making is that stealing is way better than enlisting to kill other people.
@umorsom The world isn't perfect. All you can do is what seems right with what you're given. I think being a soldier is an honorable job if the war is justified (but most aren't). The world is full of possibilities, so I'd say that if there's no honor in being a soldier or a thief, find a way to get by that isn't hurting someone else. Thanks for the civil reply, I'll look into your suggestion when there's time.
@umorsom zeitgeist 2 is built entirely off theory and hypothesis. Try not to take it with too much weight. What they paint is a utopian society that they have no idea would actually work or not. I'm not saying it's not a nice vision, but in order for it to work, everyone would have to be the same (and they're not).
@Andragon90 Indeed there is. I personallly haven't seen it yet, but I know it's about coming up with an alternative solution to economic currency. Among other things.
@umorsom humans wish to inflict death, and too bad there is no "good" society, its all pipedreams and hippie talk, humans are evil vindictive and sadistic.
@willowrhayne That's probably true. Also, perhaps if we had nothing to be angry or annoyed about, we would bore ourselves beyond imagination, leading to suicide rates sky-high. ;-)
@willowrhayne Sorry, but this discussion is boring me. If this is what we'll be arguing about, I think I'll kill myself sooner than I thought I would.
@morgmagg Makes sense. A kid steals a chocolate bar, kill him. A teen is peer pressured into stealing a tv, kill him. A man steals from a bank, is caught, and all the money goes back to the bank unharmed. Don't send him to jail for a long time, NO! kill him.
You fucking moron.
Also, nice little idea in making people watch deaths, shame modern civilisation ruined that. No more roman times.
@Yezmonster I'm not a moron; actually I'm fairly bright. My SAT score was 1170. My views just differ from yours. Mocking me doesn't change my stance on theft. I say root out the evil in the world, line the scum up at the guillotine and let those heads roll, & jam some Nugent for background music. The world would be a better place. If the deterrent is harsh enough, there may be offenders, but no repeat offenders. If thieves don't care about me, why should I care about them?
@morgmagg Well, sorry for the moron bit was a tad tired when I wrote the other post. Either way though, your views do seem a bit cruel and probably wouldn't ever get put into place. But I do see where you're coming from on a moral level in a way.
Two things though.
Have you ever seen les miserables?
and I read your post in a batmanish voice, it was amazing.
@Yezmonster Thank you, I very much appreciate that. Doug hit a sore spot with me, as I've had a car stereo stolen while at work trying to make an honest dollar. Most of his material is great, & I've laughed until my insides were about to burst. Have not read Victor Hugo; there's a ton of stuff on my list to experience, and not enough time in life. Wish I could know all the answers, but only know a few. Will keep working on that.
@morgmagg There you go, If someone is a rapist/murderer, feed him through a meat grinder. So what do we do with all these soldiers who kill innocent civilians? Ah yes, the meat grinder! Oh but they're protecting our "freedom." Yeah, our freedom to do whatever the government tells us.
@reedo1703 I'm against the war in Iraq/Afghanistan. We had no business going over there, & it just opened up a can of worms. The US has not been in a justified war since WW2. The Constitution already says that we should only go to war when necessary. You might say that a lot of innocent people were killed in Japan, & it's true, but they didn't give us much choice. When you're in a necessary fight, the only rule is to win. I want the government to change, and I vote Libertarian.
@morgmagg Whoah! You just blew my fucking mind. I agree on every single thing you just said, and I'm not being sarcastic. I'm sorry if this doesn't seem to fit you but, it sounds like your half way to an actually free mind. If you could just drop the belief of an afterlife...
@reedo1703 Glad we have some common ground. What I say about life after death is that everything is energy, & energy doesn't die. It may be possible to retain individual awareness, but not counting on that. What people call God I see as a force with infinite time & power that has expanded in all directions for the sake of experience; & I see each of us as a little piece of that force. I believe in rational self-interest, like Ayn Rand, but am very much a mystic. The world is not solid.
@morgmagg Have you ever taken anything "magical" to come to your conclusion? I did and that's why I completely understand what you are saying. Everything is energy and to break it down more, everything is waves. Are you familiar with the double-slit test?
@reedo1703 Tried to catch up to Timothy Leary to see for myself what it was about. Hadn't heard of the double-slit test by that name until a few minutes ago, but have long understood the principle. I see that we could get into a deep discussion on philosophy and metaphysics, but don't want to clutter umorsom's comments section more than I have already. Glad there's some peace between us. I don't come here to stir up shit.
@muzikjay There's a difference between accusing & convicting. If a girl is raped & killed, & the suspect's semen is in her body, & her blood is on the suspect's clothes, that evidence if hard to dispute. If guilt cannot be established, the suspect must be let go. Taking a man's freedom or his life is a serious matter. There should be no reasonable doubt concerning guilt to imprison a man; to take a man's life, the proof should be nearly indisputable.
so fuckin true, dudes a genis and says alot of what other people r scared 2

"this countrys goin to the dogs" "i don't pay my taxes just so dole scrounging scum can spend it on drink and drugs" "help the heroes, respect to the troops well done our boys" makes me sick

They don't know me at all, what I do, and as a collective of what the military does, it obviously has nothing to do with what they think they should be thanking me for. So I just feel disgusted that this is what passes for fucking patriotism. So sad and pathetic.

@rmcdaniel423 that could of been said about any profession...doesn't have to pick out soldiers. As a former Marine, u don't have to tell me that....I knew alot of guys that were just there for the college benefits. They never lasted long in boot camp.
shawndw1000 5 months ago
@shawndw1000 It's true that assholes exist in any profession, but his story was about a specific personal experience. One that involved a soldier. A soldier who was an asshole. Which seemed ironic to Stanhope, because we are constantly told that we "have to support the troops". And anyone that goes to see Doug Stanhope should expect to see irreverent irony as part of his act. Even if the audience happens to be other soldiers. Your rancor is misguided. Just saying.

BraniusBalki 8 months ago
Additionally, a decent enough case can be made that our army is more of a mercenary army than a voluntary one, and reinstating the draft may actually discourage superfluous wars as the children of the wealthy too would have to start bearing the cost.
xjtbarnesx 9 months ago
@xjtbarnesx
surely you realize children of the wealthy will successfully avoid being deployed on suicide missions (assuming they submit to the draft at all).
crikey5446 8 months ago
@xjtbarnesx Problem with that, during the Vietnam war the rich had plenty of ways to get out. One positive was that people took college seriously (get good grades or do summer school is significantly less scary then get good grades or go to fucking war). Draft would end up only forcing the poor, because the rich would find ways to get out of it. It would however get people to seriously reconsider when to support a war and when not to.

a troop's good intentions are overridden by the government's bad motives.

@umorsom I don't think that's the point he was making. His point was extremely shortsighted. The audience member was, correctly, explaining that for the poor and disenfranchised youth, the military is effectively their only hope of college. The American dream is bullshit, work ethic is irrelevant, and saying that the kids who join the army to pay for school are endorsing our nation's wars is exactly like saying that sweatshop workers should just quit if they don't like their work conditions.
xjtbarnesx 9 months ago
@xjtbarnesx NO. That is exactly what the sweatshop workers should do. No sweatshop workers, no sweatshops. If you believe in your convictions enough you stand up for them no matter the cost. Joining the armed forces, especially in times of war is basically showing support for the war.

morgmagg 1 year ago
@MyOroInvictus Cut off your head & mount it on a post by the front doors of Walmart as a warning to potential transgressors. Ha ha ha! I understand that stealing from a big corporation dilutes the negative effect on any individual, but it's still wrong. The way corporations conduct business is a completely separate issue. I love the USA; only wish that it could be a place where decent folks didn't have to worry about carjacking, home invasions, rape, theft, murder, etc.
morgmagg 1 year ago
@MyOroInvictus That's my opinion on pickpockets. Shoplifters are scum, too. The store owner is trying to make an honest living, & the thief doesn't care anything about whether the store makes a profit and the store owner can afford rent and groceries. I say beat them to death & throw them in the dumpster behind the store; they don't deserve a funeral. If consequences for crime were more severe, there would be less crime. I don't believe in repeat offenders. Once is already too much.
morgmagg 1 year ago
@MyOroInvictus A friend's car broke down; 2 men approached & acted like they wanted to help, then shoved my friend against the car & took his wallet. Those men should be hung by the balls & used for pinatas. My buddy was down on his luck & they made it worse. The thieves were beyond worthless--they were like negative numbers, so I wouldn't worry about karma there: it would make the world better to exterminate them. Jail is no deterrent for some people--it's like sending them to summer camp
morgmagg 1 year ago
@MyOroInvictus Hell yes I'd kill someone for stealing from me. Anyone who breaks into my house is getting pumped full of lead. If I could have caught the people who broke into my truck, they'd be dead. Stealing should not be tolerated, period. Murder is the killing of an innocent person; the killing of a scumbag is just karma. I'm not interested in your philosophy if it condones theft. You can think whatever you want of me. I don't step on anyone's toes unless he steps on mine.
morgmagg 1 year ago
@morgmagg Lol killing someone who steals..... You think you're above the law?
Taking one crime to try and straighten out another doesn't make you any more of a saint then the person who robbed you.
In fact people usually steal because they can't afford something. Because they were less fortunate then others to get a proper education & make money. People can't help where they were born and who they were brought up by.
Stop trying to act like a vigilante of justice.
You're just another "scumbag"
HrcWhitey 1 year ago 2
@HrcWhitey I think the laws are wrong. Getting rid of a criminal is not a crime--it's retribution. I say that if someone can't get something without stealing it, he should find a way to get by without it. If he can't get by, that's tough. A lot of people steal because they're just pieces of shit, & spend the money on crack. You can think whatever you want of me, & that won't change my opinion. I'm sick of the direction this country's going in, where criminals have more rights than victims.

hallower123 1 year ago
@MrBaphomet666 I'm for freedom to do whatever you want if it's not hurting someone else. I don't think a murderer deserves to live when his victim is dead--it's not fair; he has given up his right to be free & his right to live. The government isn't tough enough in some ways, while it's overly restrictive in others; locking up people for drugs is insane, & I feel the same about giving a thief free food for life. Just opinions from my perspective--have dealt with the aftermath of burglary 4X.
morgmagg 1 year ago
@MrBaphomet666 But kids 13 and up have at least some understanding of ethics. I've seen bad kids grow into bad adults, so I'd say nip it in the bud at that point. The threat of death is a powerful deterrent for anyone who fears death. It's important for someone to understand the consequences. But someone who's mentally ill & rapes & kills a girl & doesn't understand the consequences should still be killed; get rid of that fucker!
morgmagg 1 year ago
@MrBaphomet666 Cut his nuts off & make him eat them; say, "If you're hungry, eat those." Just kidding. You're talking about a gray area. Kids do not understand consequences; I'd say put the kid on a prison farm & let him find out what's involved in producing food; at least he won't starve, & he'll learn the value of work. I hope that in the USA, people are compassionate enough not to let a kid starve; charity could help there; in other countries I have no experience.

@umorsom zeitgeist movies are a disaster and part of the NWO scheme!
Ravenmist66 1 year ago
@umorsom Wow! That's pretty retarded!
xFogxofxWarx 1 year ago
@umorsom zeitgeist 2 is built entirely off theory and hypothesis. Try not to take it with too much weight. What they paint is a utopian society that they have no idea would actually work or not. I'm not saying it's not a nice vision, but in order for it to work, everyone would have to be the same (and they're not).
torment3d 1 year ago
@umorsom No, his point is that no one is forced to join the military for lack of other options.

@ashk0n Touché, a lot better answer than mine! Of course, you're absolutely right.

@umorsom Wait. There's a part 2?
Andragon90 1 year ago
@Andragon90 Part 2 of what?
umorsom 1 year ago
@umorsom I watched Zeitgeist 1. Half was on religion and the rest was the guv stuff. Is there a Zeitgeist 2 really?
Andragon90 1 year ago
@Andragon90 Indeed there is. I personallly haven't seen it yet, but I know it's about coming up with an alternative solution to economic currency. Among other things.

@umorsom humans wish to inflict death, and too bad there is no "good" society, its all pipedreams and hippie talk, humans are evil vindictive and sadistic.
willowrhayne 1 year ago
@willowrhayne That's probably true. Also, perhaps if we had nothing to be angry or annoyed about, we would bore ourselves beyond imagination, leading to suicide rates sky-high. ;-)
umorsom 1 year ago
@umorsom we would always make something to be angry about, when was the last time we werent as a race in a war somewhere?
willowrhayne 1 year ago
@willowrhayne Sorry, but this discussion is boring me. If this is what we'll be arguing about, I think I'll kill myself sooner than I thought I would.
umorsom 1 year ago
@umorsom go ahead then, at least its one last pacifistic person who believes people are good deep down

@umorsom Unrelated to your comment: I wikied Zeitgeist and it sounds like crap.

Yezmonster 1 year ago
@Yezmonster I'm not a moron; actually I'm fairly bright. My SAT score was 1170. My views just differ from yours. Mocking me doesn't change my stance on theft. I say root out the evil in the world, line the scum up at the guillotine and let those heads roll, & jam some Nugent for background music. The world would be a better place. If the deterrent is harsh enough, there may be offenders, but no repeat offenders. If thieves don't care about me, why should I care about them?
morgmagg 1 year ago
@morgmagg Well, sorry for the moron bit was a tad tired when I wrote the other post. Either way though, your views do seem a bit cruel and probably wouldn't ever get put into place. But I do see where you're coming from on a moral level in a way.
Two things though.
Have you ever seen les miserables?
and I read your post in a batmanish voice, it was amazing.
Yezmonster 1 year ago

Oh but they're protecting our "freedom." Yeah, our freedom to do whatever the government tells us.
reedo1703 1 year ago
@reedo1703 I'm against the war in Iraq/Afghanistan. We had no business going over there, & it just opened up a can of worms. The US has not been in a justified war since WW2. The Constitution already says that we should only go to war when necessary. You might say that a lot of innocent people were killed in Japan, & it's true, but they didn't give us much choice. When you're in a necessary fight, the only rule is to win. I want the government to change, and I vote Libertarian.
morgmagg 1 year ago
@morgmagg Whoah! You just blew my fucking mind. I agree on every single thing you just said, and I'm not being sarcastic. I'm sorry if this doesn't seem to fit you but, it sounds like your half way to an actually free mind. If you could just drop the belief of an afterlife...
reedo1703 1 year ago
@reedo1703 Glad we have some common ground. What I say about life after death is that everything is energy, & energy doesn't die. It may be possible to retain individual awareness, but not counting on that. What people call God I see as a force with infinite time & power that has expanded in all directions for the sake of experience; & I see each of us as a little piece of that force. I believe in rational self-interest, like Ayn Rand, but am very much a mystic. The world is not solid.
morgmagg 1 year ago
@morgmagg Have you ever taken anything "magical" to come to your conclusion? I did and that's why I completely understand what you are saying. Everything is energy and to break it down more, everything is waves. Are you familiar with the double-slit test?
reedo1703 1 year ago
@reedo1703 Tried to catch up to Timothy Leary to see for myself what it was about. Hadn't heard of the double-slit test by that name until a few minutes ago, but have long understood the principle. I see that we could get into a deep discussion on philosophy and metaphysics, but don't want to clutter umorsom's comments section more than I have already. Glad there's some peace between us. I don't come here to stir up shit.
morgmagg 1 year ago
@morgmagg Me either. Peace, friend.
reedo1703 1 year ago
@morgmagg what about the falsely accused?
muzikjay 1 year ago
@muzikjay There's a difference between accusing & convicting. If a girl is raped & killed, & the suspect's semen is in her body, & her blood is on the suspect's clothes, that evidence if hard to dispute. If guilt cannot be established, the suspect must be let go. Taking a man's freedom or his life is a serious matter. There should be no reasonable doubt concerning guilt to imprison a man; to take a man's life, the proof should be nearly indisputable.
