Sounds like he's having some issues getting used to the gearbox. I'm sure that was a small matter to him compared to being able to drive that awesome machine.
He's got balls to drive that thing. I would be content to just sit in the cockpit. That car is one of the most expensive things a person could ever sit their ass on. If someone were to crash that car their grandkids would be footing the bill.
The discussion about being cautious in this car are well taken: It is far too valuable to just "kick around" near the limit. Having said that, i was at Indianapolis several years ago when the US Grand Prix still ran, and Michael Schumacker drove a vintage mid 1950's Maserati. Admittedly not nearly as valuable as the Benz, but still worth easily several hundred thousand dollars, and Schuey amazed everyone by hanging the tail out and driving the old doll HARD. It was great fun to watch! :-)
@feefish001 Well if he crashed it he would be paying money to mercedes for the rest of his life. Also you are likely to die if you crash these going above like 100mph.
@MultiJimmyHenry Come on mate, don't take it so serious. Of course I'm not saying that, and I agree with you that it is totally understandable how he drives the car in this vid.
have a look to the front wheel so thin...but able to go more than 300km.h Racing at that time mean you accept the risk of dying at ant moment. ... Even if it s still dangerous it s nor rhe same.
It looks to me like there was something wrong with the car as he coasted to a stop still on track. Sounded like he was trying to find a gear but couldn't get the car to oblige.
The sound off that car is amazing you can really here that supercharger 'whine'. Lewis couldn't push too hard either because the car is rarer than an F1 champion from Chile or because he is too hard on the tryes and they would have been in bits by the third corner.
Even Lewis admits to being too hard on his tryes, watch the after race interview with him at Brazil '08.
And then kill himself in the process? Are you retarded? Unless you have a deathwish why would you drive those cars fast. They are ridiculously unsafe. It is easy to talk tough from your computer. I'd love to see you hit the gas in that car and then die
@WhoLueYou so true, just look at that positive camber angle o.O? Not to mention the fact the car is about prizeless.. There is a reason why we still have Rodeo in the world, but not REAL "historic car races" driven to the absolut limit :p
There's another consideration, in addition to your very good point: This car is worth millions. There were hardly any built, and they are ususally race winners so they are incredibly expensive! I wouldn't want to explain to my employers why I totalled a super rare, historical car!
@Stimor It's not the only one, but as I said, I'd rather die young and happy than old and cranky. So yeah, given the chance to drive that thing, I'd peg the damn tach, I'd have it all sorts of ways sideways, and if I ended up dying in it I'd die a happy happy gearhead.
Forgot to add he also got to drive Senna's MP4/4. That alone would make me happy for life, as I'm sure it did for him. He said it was on his bucket list after he got out of the car.
@MagicAyrtonforever I'd just shrug and see if I could get one of the flappy paddle cars from '93 or '94 and run in that instead.
Honestly, wouldn't bother me. The joy of feeling one of those old cars, those turbocharged monsters, at full chat would be enough to justify it. My life would be complete after driving that car.
I agree when people says that racing cars years ago were for true men, but we must think one thing: can you imagine Lewis driving this car in the limit, crashing and diyng for absolutely nothing? It's sad that racing cars are not like the earlier days, but we must think before criticize.
@vinniesoares If you race and crash to your death, it's for absolutely nothing also. For risk takers it's not about the money, he has plenty of that by now. It's about something else, the thrill , the challenge, cheating fate. Hand that car to 4 drivers and tell them fastest time wins they probably wouldn't ask what, they just want to beat the other three.
@505197 Yes, of course. People here said that Lewis should ride this car on limit. I said it's too risky. Imagine if something happens to him. He has a big carrer on F1 and a whole life to live.
And he is one of the few pilots that has the desire to race and win for itself. It's beautiful!
He woulda been told not to drive to fast. You know, that is a classic racing car, one of the very few of that make and model from it's time. If he crashed it, they wouldn't be able to just rebuild it lyk the brand new racing cars. The old ones are hugely expensive because of their classic status, and then if they had to build a new one it wouodn' be classic any longer.

At that time (1934) it was not possible to build wider tires able to resist the load. The engine output of the W25 was 354hp for a 750 Kg car (1934 !!). Tires lasted only a couple of laps of the Nürburgring !
