It looks SUPER GLOSSY NOW, SWEET!!! It reflect light AMAZINGLY!!!
I used DULUX primer and paint (2 coats). It cost me €28 for the primer and €36 for the paint. The GYPROC was €7 per 240x120. Total cost including screws, tools, plaster and boards was €170. Not too bad eh. My room is 3x4
Mr. Carter, I have two questions: I purchased Behr Primer+Paint all in one. Will this be sufficiant to paint my garage in two coats? Also, my drywall in the garage is new (only about 2 months old). Although the tape has been mudded lighlty, but seams and dimples are visable. Will this require a 2nd coat of mudd and sanding by me? Attached is some video of the drywall. Thanks for all your help, and keep up the great tips!!
I have places on the painted drywall that have chipped/peeled off exposing the "cardboard" of the drywall, if I prime and then paint over it, do you think it'd be OK?
mr carter question. I dont know whats wrong with my basement walls. I painted them with 2 gals of paint. The first gal was mixed with primer. The 2nd gal was just the regular paint and everything looks terrible. There are areas where the paint just like falls down like its dripping down the wall. 2 gals on my walls and it still looks crappy. The shade is terrible like if the paint is so thin.
Did you use a high-quality paint? Did you use great tools? Did you apply it correctly? If you have runs, I'd say you failed. If it's too thin, then you spread the paint too far. Painting with a roller is not as easy as it looks.
Thanks, Tim. Enjoy the videos. Quick question on finishing. Between sanding and painting, how much cleaning of the drywall dust is necessary? What about between sanding one coat of compound and applying the next coat of compound?
Dust will interfere with adhesion. Of that there is no doubt. The paint can label clearly states that the surface being painted must be dust-free. Read the label on the topping compound to see what that recommendation is.
This is a good question. If we don't need to skim then why do we do so? I'm about to plasterboard a wall whose plaster has deteriorated beyond repair.
Most of that is really not necessary. Simply mop the walls with a sponge mop. With a slighty damp sponge mop, go from the ceiling to floor, and repeat until you have went all the way around te room. This eliminates the need for sanding after the primer coat, and eliminates the need for any fancy products. Sponging the alls in like skimming the entire wall....it'll come out like glass.
For several years there have been vacuum cleaners that have sanding attachments. The dust is captured that way. USG just introduced a new topping compound that produces heavy dust where most of the dust falls to the floor instead of floating in the air.
Hey Tim. I always hand sand because I get a better feel for the work. Do you have any ideas on that. I have heard of the new drywall mud though. That may be the solution in my case. What is the brand of that?
I am getting ready to shoot a new video showing a technique that requires MINIMAL sanding - skim coat the entire wall surfcae. Go to the USG website for that new low-dust topping compound.
Thanks Tim. Always learn a lot from you. Now can you do one on tile replacement (I have spare tile and grout) and would like to do that over your clever technique in this case!
Hi. Tip # 1 is to apply compound as smoothly and flat as possible so no high ridges need to be sanded down. #2 is to be ready to do 3 coats over taped seams and nail holes to insure good coverage. Finally it may sound crude but I will place a box fan in a window and exhaust out during sanding if weather permits.Your clean up will be minimal.Drywall dust "floats" and will go everywhere.Look for low dust brand compound if you can.
In the UK it is traditional to 'plaster' over drywall with a skim coat before finishing. I did a drywall ceiling in my dining room using American techniques, tools and jointing methods and the finish is truly flawless.
Sir, you just SAVED my room.

why don't americans skim coat? we do it in europe
bigjonnyjon 2 years ago
Some do. But you don't need to if you use a special primer sealer paint.

I damn near passed out from the smell of the sealer. What can I do to protect my self from the fumes?

I was going to skim...but do I really need to?

No real need if you sand all ridges and use the special primer/sealer.

Tim what about drywall dust cleanup? Have any suggestions about containing/cleanup of drywall dust. Thanks... (maybe you could do a video about it)
