I keep having an issue of the portawall popping up as i inflate the tire. I've tried lubricating the tire and rim to let it settle as i inflate it, but to no avail, the whitewall refuses to stay put.
@miosotiscabrera bright eyes has alot of good tips id like to say first off,but id like to add caution to this tip if i could.porta walls can look good but only on the stock width.if you put them on tires with a wider tread than the stock size, the porta walls wont sit flush on the tire, they will bow out.they look good on the stock 165,o3 155,145's but u might see in the vid of my bug, with wider tread it wont work. plus,if they dont sit flush, dirt gets behind and permantly discolors it
Hello Chris, It is Now April 27th 2010. And I just got a set of Portawalls.
and for some reason they didn't work. I took them to a tire shop and they weren't able to help me. Is there any way I can install them my self other then a tire shop?
Please HELP!! my 74 VW super looked Very BNice with them on..
hey chris thanks for the info. I am from south of mexico and I got them over here, mine are omega brand. what I did my tire man broke the bed, set the porta wall and inflated at first it was not centered, then we took the air off again, centered it with our hands and inflated back, they set perfectly, my advice would be to take your time to degrease the tire and rim before setting the portawall, and the tire man needs to be patience to get it right. regards, christ
@brighteyefilms thanx man.i got the same brand.changing the subject im building a hotrod beetle and i want a basic wiring diagram.cause i have eliminated practically everything any placei could get one.
thanx for your input i figured it out...fot those people that are interested.dont remove the tire of the bead of the rim.just line up the portawall and pound it in with your fist....works great that way.
it worked and i drove it evrywhere no problems.i just took the air out but its lose enough that with a little help with your fist it pops right in thanx for your input.
I have been doing on-line research on Portawalls for weeks trying to decide if I should give them a try on my '66 Beetle. Reviews are mixed on the durability, and damage to the tire caused by them.
Your review, knowledge and previous experience with Portawalls has convinced me to give them a try.
I'm really glad I came across your clip on these as I have seen your other clips and really value your opinion and experience.
how do u center them man, cause both of my front tires arent centered at all lol, im poppin them out again and re-center them, but do u use any special technique?
thanks for replying, your truely an inspiration chris! and yeah i told the guy at the tire shop not to use any soap, instead he used their "Special" glue so the tire doesnt have any leak, i would recommend also using that, helps the white wall stay in place as well, and avoid waking up to all 4 tires being flat :)
Quick tip, when you first put them in, for one reason or another, if the tire isnt 100% centered, you´ll notice that they get like little bumps when u park ur car, i was going crazy trying to make them go away, even used superglue... WRONG, dont ever do that! I spent have an afternoon trying to take it off with a knife. The tip is, just get them on the road... drive ur bug around 50 to 60 mph for lets say 5 to 10 minutes, and they will shape beautifully to the tire! like real white walls.
Good tip, that is definitely a point I should have made. Also, tell your tire guy not to use SOAP! Some of these guys think that using soap lets it seat in better. It may at the shop.... but they fly off when you drive away. They will slip right out of the rim.
do they flap??

@Creature845 there is your problem, you lubricated it, not supposed to do that. They have to go in dry or it will always pop out.

i cant get mine to seat right so i might glue them what do you sudjest.

glue will not hold them, make sure your rim is clean on the inside, no rust.

I always bring them to my tire guy, and uses a machine that breaks the bead and lays the whitewall flat and centers it by hand.

not so good for the wheel, because they destroy the flank... they rub

I have heard that. But I have yet to have had a problem with them. I have been putting them on my bugs for 9 years, so far so good.
