That's a "chase plane." They follow all new Boeing models into the air for the first few months to ensure nothing's wrong and if something does happen, they report it. I remember hearing a story that the first 757 almost didn't return because of a depressurization issue.
They don't have an ejection seat because it would add crazy weight and these planes are crazy safe. Further, there's aerodynamic testing done in wind tunnels, risk reduction (fly safer conditions first and gradually get riskier), and simulator flight with real flight hardware in labs before they go fly. Military test pilots have a much higher death rate, even with ejection seats.
Well, I wouldn't say an engine failing is SAFE, but to give an idea of how robust these planes are ... all Boeing airplanes are certified to fly on ONE engine. That includes the 747. Yes, that's right, you can fly the 747-8 on ONE engine! They even test in simulator the all-engine-out scenario to verify the backup generator which spins in the airstream pops out and provides emergency power to give the pilots a chance to land.
yea i understand you i am just saying that should have ejection seats. i mean or atleast have small little parachutes underneath the seat u can get and jump out somehow, lol
It wouldn't add crazy weight.. it'd just complicate things insurmountably. They'd have to make the cockpit windows blow out, and have the seat in a position that would clear the windows. Not accounting for the fact that if a commercial airliner goes down with PAX, it's pilot should go down with it. It's respect, and tradition. To do otherwise would be cowardice.
A second is the difference between life and death in the Air Force. Unless an F-15 is going to be attacking your 747, you'll have quite a long time to safely land your plane.
And still the ugliest, and still the least practical airplane, still more expensive per passenger mile than the new 747-8I, still NO CARGO VERSION. Yeah. I'm impressed. Not. The dude from flightblogger rode in an A380 for 16 hours and wanna know something? That cabin was RANK after that long! Terrible air quality. This plane won't beat on you. A380 = treated like sardines.
I guess that would be true on any long flight. Ever flown on the Singapore to New York Route on an A340-600? Now thats about a 20 hr flight if youre lucky enough to endure such jet lag.
I would thank the A380 would be more comfortable than a 747 due to the cabin width; but I guess its all about the seating configuration.
Oh come now. You know this aircraft is much more attractive than the bloated Airbus 380. The fact that the 747-8 keeps the iconic hump in the front and it's now 19 feet longer than the original 747 and 10 feet longer than the 380 makes it look more intimidating than ever.
The Airbus 380 simply doesn't have that intimidating appeal to it.
747-8 = Semi truck with tinted windows and massive trailer.
it was really cool to see that, but was somewhat disappointed, i expected to see more wing flex..still on the A380's case, just remember the -8 is the 747 redefined 100 times over, the A380 is yet to climb that ladder. so don't underestimate her just yet
Excellent video!!!!!!!!!! It was so beautifications airplanes is in the skies for first-time. I can't wait to see 747-8 will be landing into PAE shortly.
That is one long 747! Wow, this is a great day for aerospace - and there were rumors of Boeing giving up on this project! This plane is world-beater - has none of the issues that plague the A380.
nice view point. I saw the one of the intercontinental 748's turning for final at PAE about a hour and a half ago.

no winglets?
gnitohgok 2 years ago
Boeing doesn't test new airplane models with winglets right away. Their new wings make winglets obsolete anyway.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
why don't these new planes have a ejection seat for just the pilots?
i mean if i wanted to become a pilot i would rather fly a airforce jet with ejection seats then rot and die from a big boeing 747 pilot chair..

@rutgersfan7 Exactly, it's not realistic. That's what I was trying to prove with my comment, which was in response to Legit92nick.

@fahddoggz agreed. The 747-8F just looks plane old fashion compared to A380

@whitireia it looks like any other boeing, i probably wouldnt notice the difference. But the 747 in itself is a pretty cool looking plane.
