I have a better idea for the independence, if you want to join my discussion feel free to ask me how much better econamically PR can be better, been independent.
Another fact, is that if people in PR want to become 51st state, then they should also include Guam, American Samoa, Marina Islands, and US Virgin Islands. Those are other territories part of US, who just as PR also has the right to be part of US. Imagine how much would that cost US to bring other territories as states. Not favorable if the average american is educated on this topic. I can go on and on and make good debate how becoming a state is very costly.
well, she sucks. Seriously, I'm a Puerto Rican, I live in the island and all she did was cry because some dude went out of his place and said something that wasn't even the guy who was giving the testimony. Again, another politician, this time a lady, disappoints me.
ok, nothing is wrong with her English, perfect grammar and syntax. Her pronunciation is bad but understandable. Her English is by far way better than your Spanish.
I will have to say that 80 % of Puerto Rican in the Island do not have a good graps of the spoken English Language. I believed that Puerto rico should be admited in the union respecting our Spanish language. We will encourage our people to learn the English language at the same time federal goverment should promote and encoraging the learning of the spanish language in all the nation.
Excuse me? She speaks English fine. That she has an accent, is a different story. I'm Puerto Rican, but I was raised in Pennsylvania, so I have a Pennsylvanian accent. She has a Hispanic accent. Texans have Texan accents, and etc.. Being Puerto Rican doesn't mean that one doesn't speak English well.
imagine if you will if all the decision making in the US was left up to china or russia, thats the situation in puerto rico, what im getting from you is that you think the little Puerto Ricans need the big US to come and save them all the time
Your fake patrotism is laughable, sustained by no facts, and no sustainable economy, just a decadent me first society that the island has developed with all these years of handouts. It is blind pride that doesn't let you see that being a state holds the most promise for Puerto Rico. Get off that high horse of idealism, stop seeing the United States as inherently evil and focus more on what you as I would assume a nuyorican can do to fix the country
as i keep saying, the island will be flooded by non puerto ricans and the culture will just be a niche for white america just like hawaii...if they plan their economy well they'll do just fine
Maybe statehood would have been ok; however; if you look at the status of the USA currently vs other powerful actors such as the European Union & China the situation is not the same. A reformed commonwealth might be the best solution since unfortunately there are many lazy people who would not like to work on the land again. Being a state really does not change much unless it allows PR to be in charge of its relations with other countries and control its waters.
And the whole kicking the US out is a bit of an overstament. it was more like we toppled the the corrupt government like all people have a right to do. Tried to cozy up to the US but got a cold shoulder, cozied up to the soviets and almost caused a nuclear war, and then socialism went bankrupt when they Soviets sqaundered their money on a badly planned central economy

Also they day empanadas are replaced by apple pies is either the day people stop eating dinner for dessert... get real people eat whatever the hell they want or is sold to them. If you believe puertorican customs would be replaced as easily you have no faith in your own culture.
And about Cuba, yes the US interfered there, yes they supported a dictator because it suited their needs, but it wa Batista that did the dirty work
it seems i can reply to these videos, anyway. are Texans and New Yorkers any less Texans because they are american citizens? Leave that us vs them nitpicking argument to the fera and hate mongers.
If you haven't noticed and you might not if you don't live in Puerto Rico there's pplenty of not puertoricans coming to the island for a better life, and the only thing that prevents rich retirees rom coming here and spending their money is the status.
Spain is a multicultural country, Galician, Valencian, Catalan And other languages convey in one only country, think about the european Union all those countries with their own languages, what makes you think thay are ever gonna lose their language, why will that happen to us when we are an isolated island?
I consider Statehood to be the best option. Too many Puerto Ricans have died in American wars to fight for our liberty as American citizens, yet we can't vote for the President, we don't have appropriate representation in Washington, and we have less benefits than Americans living within the 50 US States. It's an unfair situation. I am for Statehood, but if brought to Congress' attention, our request to join the union is denied, I'd be absolutely in favor of Independence.
Why would we need to give up our culture and identity as Puerto Ricans? Are you out of your mind? Look at Alaska, and Hawaii. Have they lost their culture or identity? If someone from New York moves to Georgia, are they no longer from New York? There's absolutely no reason for us to lose our culture or identity. It's been exposed to the American culture for many years, and I don't see why it'd be overwhelmed as a state. Your claim is absolutely ridiculous.
thats exactly what happened to hawaii and alaska, their cultures have just become a niche, theyre a minority in their own land, the same would happen to puerto rico....full blooded hawaiians are hard to come by
blood quantum laws of old, now most hawaiians are of either mixed japanese or white ancestry or both...and its still true that theyre a minority in their own island...the latter would happen to Puerto Rico since blood quantum doesnt exist now
How the hell can you "give up your culture and identity as a Puerto Rican" if you plan on doing that should statehood come you're a chump, and by your reasoning independnce would do that too????

but with independence we can represent ourselves in the international community....and as stated earlier it wouldnt be immediate cause the economy would collapse
Many independence natiosn from the Caribean, for Examplethe Dominican republic have international representation but are at the mercy of the USA, because all these nations economies depend of the health of the US economy. Their is no true independent nation in our hemisfere. If the USA do not dominate them politically, it does dominate them Economically. I still think our best option is statehood.
well puerto rico could establish foreign relations with other g8 countries and the european union...those other countries typically withdraw to each other
Ah, are you just ignorant of the fact that Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory and in no way can establish like any other State foreign relationships!! Nydia Velazquez only believes in the Status Quo and does not care to fix the political situation and that is why she was so hostile to the witness.
It is too late for any real independence since the U.S. killed the movement along time ago and the PPD are a bunch of colonized zombies. The PNP and PIP know what they want.
its never too late, in the long run statehood would not help the economy, since puerto rico would still be giving most of its money to the U.S. even more so than as a "commonwealth" it's not like the U.S. would immediately impose an embargo as long as it left on respectful terms, Puerto Rican citezens in the U.S. Army would be transfered to be the foundation of the PR military, and all the revinue coming from tourism and the like would go completely to PR
Ah, well I see now your thread about G8 was if Puerto Rico was independent. I did not read your comments to ServantJoe. I apologize..but my comments on Nydia is still the same..she is a Popular and lives in New York and denies the very voice she has in Congress to those on the island. Puerto Rico will never be Independent unless the U.S. Congress kicks it out from under the U.S. Flag.
That is very poor analogy. Basically, what you are saying is if we cant beat 'em, join em. I wonder if George Washington thought that since England controlled the whole northern American hemisphere, to just let things go and just keep being a colony?
I do not believe that we will loose our identity. We will remain the same as we are . As a matter of fact the goverment of the State of Puerto Rico will have more power to protect our culture and identity. An I can tell you that the United States will have to recognized that the Spanish language is the defacto second language in the nation.
look at hawaii...only 61 of people on a private island speak hawaiian as a first language, it is a de facto language but off of that island there is no such thing as a hawaiian who speaks it as a 1st language...and independence of course wouldnt be instant..it should be gradual, to ween the island off government handouts
We have been under american rule for over 100 years and we still have a strong culture and striong language. The island have a large number of Americans from the mainland and we still are who we are Puerto Ricans. We are stubborn people..we are not Hawaiins.

She kicked his BUTT. Whether you agree or disagree with PR becoming 51st state is small potatoes compared to the REAL FIGHT. Decisions should not be permitted to be made that affect a ppl without the ppls input and say so. VIVA PUERTO RICO.
As a Puerto Rican that has lived in the U.S. all of my life, I feel that the issue of statehood is not weighed heavily enough as an issue of concern over here in the states. As a band of brothers, all of us PRs must unite and find what is best for our beautiful island, whether it is indepence or statehood, it must be best for not only the political and economic standing, but for the preservation of its culture, its roots, and its traditions as well.
Why do the Presidential Task Force use this little experience rookies to investigate and research the situation of Puerto Rico. It is because the situation of Puerto Rico not important enough to have people of weight to do this kind of work. This is an isult to Puerto Rican.
Gierbolini90210 is absolutely incorrect. There's no policy that requires a specific language in order to join the Union. For example, New Mexico's State Constitution was originally written in Spanish, and later translated into English. English is already an official language in Puerto Rico, as is Spanish. I don't understand why that would need to change.
I respect and agree with the Presidential Task Force's conclusions. I think she has been bought by the lobbyists who seek to perpetuate the colonial status in Puerto Rico. It does not seem so but, the truth is, the highest goal of democratic fulfillment in Puerto Rico that can be achieved. If separatists were aware that being the minority does not make their ideals less achievable, maybe they would be more respectful towards those of us who wish the same rights all U.S. citizens have.
Well lets see, do I want the present status quo? Hmmm, govt runs out of money, pet massacres, police assassin, oh today I found out that the entire license (DOT) system has failed for a week now. You can't get a license, insurance, title or even a copy of your registration. Ya I think the present status quo is working just fine, shit lets let Ruben come in and destroy it some more.
Estadidad no viene.
the best options for Puerto Rico are associated republic or independence.Puerto Rico a state is not likely because if something come to the senate to make Puerto Rico a state the congress they will give it a big NO.They don't want a state of mulatos being part of them.
The real solution for Puerto Rico is statehood. Becoming a state of the United States of America is the best Status to offer to Puerto Rico.
This video sucks, as a Puerto Rican, I so heartly feel and believe that we as Puerto Ricans should for our selves elect what is democratically correct. For the past five and a half decades Puerto Rican have lived under a false pretense of PAN, TIERRA Y LIBERTA. The only possible way to truly apply those three wonderful words is by electing the one party who for decades have been informing our country of the abusive stagnant statues.VOTE INDEPENDENCE AND WE SHALL PROSPER!
That guy really didn't say really much, he didn't admitted anything or denied anything. This is stupid,I'm in favor for the bill H.R. 1230, i vote for Free Association so we can keep our country strong and more powerful and a better balance.

Estadidad no viene.

the best options for Puerto Rico are associated republic or independence.Puerto Rico a state is not likely because if something come to the senate to make Puerto Rico a state the congress they will give it a big NO.They don't want a state of mulatos being part of them.

Magio03 3 years ago

Indeed, I think we could use a few more stars on our flag. :) Perhaps we can include DC and Guam while we're at it?
