There are people who may look at this anime space saga as a two sided coin. There is no right or wrong I guess, just a matter of personal opinions. I chose to believe that the storyline is universal & common regardless of where the production came from. I believe that Yamato or Starblazers is about saving humanity as a whole against all evil. The Japanese & English song themes are great however, I must admit that Isao Sazaki's song version brings out the emotions like nobody else can. Unequalled
I have to agree with ChristopherTheKnight. Politics aside, I personally would like to believe in my heart that this anime masterpiece, whether the ship is called Yamato or Argo, or whether it may be of Japanese origin or it being an Americanized adaptation, that they both have a common storyline. An incredible journey to save mother Earth against all odds. When politics get in the way, it's always no good. It spoils it all. Let us leave the politics inside the drawers where it belongs.
I grew up with the American release, Star Blazers. It was awesome, and I loved it. Then I saw Space Battleship Yamato and I knew that comparing the two was useless. They are both amazing, one for how it appeared to me in my youth, the other because it is simply to powerful to explain...even in its cornyness.
as much as I look forward to seeing this.. these new cosmo tigers just don't look as cool as the ones from the comet empire. They look too bulky on the wings in my oppinion.
Sweet video. Can't beat the original Japanese theme. Gives me chills when they say Y A M A T O! The english version can't hold a candle to this. Argo....bah!
Sorry to all the "Star Blazer" fans out there...but this is all about the battleship YAMATO...not an Argo. The Japanese version is how this song should be heard.
Yamato stands exactly for whats the show is about: fight for something larger than yourself, against a very powerfull enemy, that used radiation to almost destroy your home, and fight even knowing you have little chance of win.
The battles thenselves remminds a LOT WWII battles (no offense to the americal fellows, but its true).
What Argo stands for? (...)
So I underestand why americans changes Yamato to Argo. I just don't like it.
Argo stood for fighting for something larger than yourself against a powerful enemy even though all odds say you will lose. The names are changed, the heart and soul of the ship and its crew are not. Argo or Yamato, both were manned by brave crews who against all odds faught for hope of their planet.
Like or dislike the changes if you want, but don't even try to say they don't stand for the same things, becase they do. A few Americanized edits do not change that one tiny bit.
If Argo stands for the Argonauts vessel (Greek Mythology), yor are 100% right in all you have said.
Still, I find just too convenient that all about the radiation poisoning (cleary reference to Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings) were omited. There is no problem in renaming the character names, but trying to avoid possible unconfortable kids questioning is just not ok.
I remmember when I first saw this I had no idea why Argo looked like a Naval Ship.
It was almost certainly named after such. They even address that in Star Blazers, saying Yamato needed a new name since now it carried the hopes of all mankind instead of just the Japanese. The radiation poisoning was also not omitted (the words may not have been used directly, but they still needed the Cosmic Purifier and Earth was still destroyed). It is a bit of a culture clash (Matsumoto is a WWII child and all), but the premise of humanity needing hope in a dark time is there.
Dude, you really don't know much. This song was composed back in the early 70s for the original Space Battleship Yamato tv series. btw Most anime theme songs in Japan were actually by men up unitl the mid 80s. This song in particular became the adopted unofficial song of the Japanese Navy.
@Mach5Motorsport like i said: i understand that the song is iconic and all that but to me it sounds like the kind of song that makes people laugh at you if they walk on you while listening to it!
Sounds silly? The song is ICONIC to the series! Its brassy, its uplifting, its powerful, its about good triumphanting over evil, no matter the risks! Its corny as hell, and that's what makes it so damn good.
I found a review by an American Yamato fanboy who actually flew to Tokyo to see it. He said it was spectacular even though he didn't understand Japanese.
