No, no. A sequel is a terrible idea. I would support Telltale doing a spit-and-polish job on it. I would also be behind getting Tim Shaefer back where he belongs and making adventure games.
A sequel though? Egads, no. This was self-contained, and beautiful, and a sequel would cheapen it.
Interestingly enough, Grim Fandago was a lot like the episodic games Telltale releases nowadays, but in one convenient package.
I've watched the whole thing, took me like 7 days of watching in my vacation, I even dreamed about it, even though thats not really something you want, I was in their empty undead world and such, but the story - fucking great.
I would love to see a sequel with Celso as the main character. In the original game there are hints to Celso's story throughout the game, but the story is never told. It is just left as an unsolved mystery. It's a real shame, because there is so much unused potential in this story!
If Grim Fandango could make it to Steam and such just like Monkey Island did with a original and updated version. Then perhaps finally this game could reach the audience it should have deserved back in 1998, a lot of folks have become interested in the game after hearing so much from it on the internet and seeing playthroughs on Youtube. I feel privileged to have played it on release date and many many times afterwards, for me the question is not if they will re-release it but when.
@DutchKat i'm the same, I got it for when it first came out, I bought it from PC world. I still remember opening the huge cardboard box and taking the disk out and how excited I was installing it. I still have the orginal with box stored away. I may have to break it out, haven't played it in around 5 years. I like to wait ages to play an old favourite because it it makes it feel a little more like the first time I played it but never quite the same.
A sequel in the same world with new characters could work very well (maybe a return of glottis or something would work). Manny and Meche are gone, But the world is still there. Maybe they developed an unsprouting technique and it got into the wrong hands in the eight underworld? There are possibilities, especially with the great minds at Telltale, they also rebooted Monkey Island and Sam & Max in wonderful ways, so why not Grim Fandango (episodic gaming works great too, 1 year, 1 ep.)?
I work in the industry, this game doesn't need a sequel, and won't get one, especially since its core audience has grown up and doesn't play games much anymore. It's over, enjoy the game as it is, story game perfected. It's not coming back.
I believe that if a game is Good in its way and you achieved a master piece, it should be left like that.. maybe remaster it so New Gen computers could play it or at least to get a much greater detail but without changing its style or control.
Add some Profiles or Unlockables maybe to expand the details of the story.
Not many people know about Grim Fandango an Lucas Arts should remaster it so that new gamers would enjoy it to.
Funny this is is the same song heard in the awesome final of The Sopranos..
Anyway I don't know about a sequel..this is a piece of art, the ninth world is in our minds, and it's different for everyone, this is the best final for one of the best game.
there was a rumor Tim Burton would do a movie about it but somehow it was only a rumor.... i think Burton would be the perfect person to do a movie about it!
We dont want a sequal. We want a remake this game so badly deserves. Leave the audio untouched, improve graphics and fix those oh so annoying glitches,
Sadly it is incredibly unlikely that a developer would do this, Grim Fandango was a commercial failiure. Unline monkey island. Perhaps some individuals could do this, I mean it has a devout fan base.
I don't think anyone who says a sequal would not work because of what ever reason is wrong. Any story can be told after he reached the nineth, give it any reason you like but they could make one. It's an adventure game, most of them get sequals. If they can make loads of Monkey Islands they can make another Grimfandango, Besides people have been asking for one for years and still are, that proves it's not a phase people are still begging for it to happen.
Sequel, but not with Manny Calavera. A new character and cast, trying to survive in their own ways, within a world where Manny and Meche are only stories from the past. Star Wars does that kind of stuff all the time; it's all about the universe, and the potential for characters living within it!
ahhh the golden age of lucas arts adventure games. How i wish they wre still making games like this. its the type of game you think about for years after youve completed it!
@mike649fox I know right? when you finished a game like this you got kind of sad like : "I can't believe it's already over :(" and you aren't able to play it for a while until you forget all solusions
@MrTinkotin I know, its like when uve finished it u want to erase the memory of it so you can play it again!! it takes too long to forget the puzzles naturally!

what happened in 2005 you say? mercenaries happened, their last great game
I can't get my copy to play past the tittle sequence. I really want to play Grim Fandango, but I'd rather play a version that doesn't require me to pull my hair out over technical issues.
A remake would be great on for PC aswells as on PSN and XBL with updated graphic and ability to run better on newer computers (Keeps crashing on mine )= )
A remake would be great on for PC aswells as on PSN and XBL with updated graphic and ability to run better on newer computers (Keeps crashing on mine )= )
it should be an XBLA release with enhanced HD graphics and achievements.. this game changed the way i played games and appreciated them. good ol manny : )
So, what exactly are the odds of a remake coming out? I actually own this game and played it back in 98, I think. My old computer eventually crapped out on me and now I have a Mac which I love.. Still, I have yet to find anything that will enable me to play or download that game without installing windows on my mac. What a drag!
With only slight graphical updates ala Monkey Island, with everything else left untouched. To give more people chance to play this gorgeous rare gem!!!
@Hazelduff Why remake a game with such a beautiful art style that I believe looks better and more creative then alot of games from this year I say lets just leave this game as it is a near perfect work of art
@Hazelduff I Agree, through I tought those graphics would never look bad, they seem to be a little awful playing in a 26" Screen.
This would be a wonderful idea, as I play this game since im 4 years old, and I still play it now that im 16, I remember every detail, voices and dialogues... This game gave me something useful for real life. It has a very emotive final... In short words, it's Perfect.
No sequel, no prequel. The game is perfect. Anymore would give away either the mystery of what happened beforehand, or what happened when Manny reached the Ninth Underworld. I know it's hard to say goodbye to a wonderful cast of characters, but you have to leave them in that one game.
I couldn't agree more. I do hope, however, that the atmosphere in this game will ever be felt again in other games. Till now, only The Neverhood came close (very close).
It'd still be too much exposition. The characters had that air of mystery about them, as did facets of the world. If you explain it too much, all of that is gone.
@OhhhMyAxels I always toyed with the idea of a prequel, Manny's life before he was dead and the lead up to his untimely death, but you're very right. It's just perfect.
@OhhhMyAxels Gotta agree. I don't see anyway they could possibly make a sequel, and a prequel would be stupid. Well maybe they could do a game about what happened to Glottis :P
Definately not a sequel.. the story wrapped up nice, happy ending. A Prequal might work though, how Manny ended up in The Land of The Dead, how he got his job etc. :-)
I'm pretty sure Shafter hates sequels. Nearly all his games have been left open to a sequel that very few of them have received. I'm still waiting for Psychonauts 2. I suppose it doesn't help that none of them to well commercially, apart from possibly Brutal Legend, which seems to be doing well.
i would kill for a new gen rendition of the same Grim Fandango story... keep the story, keep the characters, keep the voice talents and keep the dialogue.... just update the graphics... i would buy it over again
yeah maybe so.. but how cool would it be to see the characters back with a new look and a cool story.. its so sad that they pulled the plug on Grim Fandango 2 and Full Throttle 2.. those were the two games i loved the most
maybe not a sequal but deffinatley a spin off maybe the story off another reaper or and escape from the afterlife im sure the guys who creatoed this can surley think of another great story to go with the games concept
I think mr. Calaveras story has been told. It was awesome, no need for addition. But there remains so much in the land of the dead to do :) New story, new stuff, people everything. WOuld be awesome, me and my ex had a blast playing the first one. And making sweet love too.
i think telltale should do episodic sequels starring a different character or manny, preferably, if they could put him back in the story without it seeming stupid and tacked on
While Grim Fandango is without doubt one of the greatest adventure games of all time, both for its brilliant puzzles and excellent storyline, I'm not sure it really needs a sequel. It wrapped things up pretty neatly, and the few mysteries it leaves - such as what happens in the ninth underworld - are probably best left mysteries.
A new adventure game of the same great quality would be great though...
Though it's not an adventure game, I'm looking forward to Brütal Legend, also by Tim Schafer.
PC gamer put the 100 best games of all time in a list a few years ago. Grim Fandango came out as number 1. I just beat it for the first time. The story and the whole atmosphere really makes you understand why it made the top. Gotta say that I had to fight the urge to cry when it ended. can't think of any game to this date that had that impact on me.
But, yes, we NEED an HD beefed up engine for the original! I have heard rumors that now that Lucas Arts is porting out games like Monkey Island on Steam and such services they may also pick up other old games to do the same thing. Of course, it comes down to fan appeal and bugging the folks at Steam and Lucas Arts. :P
yes you can download the game from bt junkie and after you install it update it to version 01_01 (the pack is in the download you gat it put it in the installed game and then run it)
This is the best best BEST adventure games ever! Neither Syberia (1 or 2) or The Longest Journey or any other adventure ever surpasses this game in fun, originality and just great gameplay! We love you Manny!
It is absolutely one of the greatest games ever produced.
I am going to throw my two cent theory out here on how to get any beloved old-time game re-released, remade, and "sequaled": There has got to be a millionaire out there, with enough money and free time, who loves this game enough to hire a group of very talented artists, programmers, and producers. Hell, this rich individual could simply say "Here is ten million dollars. Make a fantastic game. Keep the change."
By possible, you mean... like, when people actually care about a game's storyline, wit and puzzles and art instead of graphics (different than art, ladies and gents), shooting shit and explosions? HOLY CRAP. I wish... but... but it won't happen. If only LucasArts still had it's pizazz.
this game is so good watching videos like this make me cry, what happend to game making like this? Grim Fandango will always have a special place in my heart.....great vid btw
I have never, ever played a game that I was so captivated by. I simply couldn't get enough of the characters and the world they lived in. Not to mention the puzzles were pretty damn good too.
I don't how they could make a sequel or prequel but I'd love to see an updated version. Not better visuals necessarily, just more of Manny and co.
I was actually thinking they could make some sort of prequel atleast. U could play some Calavera parts earlier than in the game, but mainly the game could focus on Glottis on how he ended up in the Casino, how he got his Car and mechanic station and how he seems always to be ahead to fill out those spots :)
Maby it's better not to have siquel... u know, they r always worse... what siquel we can have now? I bet that that would be some kind of stupid arcade for children with "adventure elements"....
first comment, just like the title says, dont worry, maybe it will come out, and hopefully soon, just like previously done with futurama, we need to make an online petition and sign to bring it back, its working for the nice cartoon, futurama, which i used to watch
I've just completed the game for the n-th time.. I feel like I personally know and love Manny Calavera.

MilcodeGraaf 2 years ago
no. not a sequel. grim fandangos story ended as it was supposed. imo a sequel would ruin the grim fandango feeling you built up in the first game
MrQueenie 2 years ago 5
What about a game that took place in the same world? No Manny, but drew from the same film noir inspirations?
WastedPo 2 years ago
maybe not a sequal but deffinatley a spin off maybe the story off another reaper or and escape from the afterlife im sure the guys who creatoed this can surley think of another great story to go with the games concept

ONE of the best? YOU SON OF A GOD DAMN MOTHER FUCKING BITCH! ITS THE BESTGAME IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE!
sengfar964 1 year ago 2
Yes, as far as I'm concerned it is the best adventure game of all time. :)
However, I haven't played every adventure game ever made, so who really knows.

@FnitterFnask i couldn't agree more
yet i can't help but think that a sequel would be crap

But, yes, we NEED an HD beefed up engine for the original! I have heard rumors that now that Lucas Arts is porting out games like Monkey Island on Steam and such services they may also pick up other old games to do the same thing. Of course, it comes down to fan appeal and bugging the folks at Steam and Lucas Arts. :P

i really wish they'd do something new but sadly i think the grim series is gonna be a legacy and untouched
biggnoobb 2 years ago
i bet telltale could do some good episodic games for this

It really isn't open for a sequel but a re-release in HD would be cool. =)

The story wasn't left open for a sequel. I believe that was done on purpose. And rightly so. It is perfect as it is, a sequel would be weird.

I have never, ever played a game that I was so captivated by. I simply couldn't get enough of the characters and the world they lived in. Not to mention the puzzles were pretty damn good too.
I don't how they could make a sequel or prequel but I'd love to see an updated version. Not better visuals necessarily, just more of Manny and co.
gutrag 3 years ago 2
I was actually thinking they could make some sort of prequel atleast. U could play some Calavera parts earlier than in the game, but mainly the game could focus on Glottis on how he ended up in the Casino, how he got his Car and mechanic station and how he seems always to be ahead to fill out those spots :)
