Actually i´m just saying that it doesn´t metter if is expensive or not, if the japanese can afford it, and it worth the money invested in it, it´s a good way to spend the money.
Maybe......or maybe not, i just don´t know, cause the f-16E/F cost about 80 million per A/C, but this is cost per unit, i think if you ad the cost of development, it could cost more; on the other side f-2 cost close to the 100 million, is bigger, with less maneuverability, but it can carry more payload, because of it´s wingspand.
Anyway, f-2 is a political machine, because japanese guys didn´t want to buy something that were not born in their territory.
Actually, there is, because the F-16E/F is a totally new A/C with the lastest technologies (The shape is the only left old thing it have) internally it´s all new, as i read in other places, the UAE goverment pay like 3 billion in developing cost.......a big amount of money, but it really does it´s job!!!

no, a much cheaper, but just as effective method is to just buy vanilla F-16E/F

There wouldn't be a cost of development for F-16E/F as it is readily exported.
And I agree, Japan is just unwilling to buy a stock aircraft, sad rly.
