Well, I think that Kataang is the better couple. Like we have seen nothing can destroy true love! Although uko became good, helped Katara AND saved her once can´t break her love to Aang... And that´s the romantic thing in Kataang. Aang ended the greatest war in history of earth for her (in book 3 chapter 9 "Nightmares and Daydreams" he told her why he wanted to win) and she cried when Azula shot him with the lightning...

First, they wouldn't explain why Katara had a romantic interest in Aang. Second, we never even see what Aang's mother was like. Third, the writers sure didn't specify any of that.

As for what would spark a romance between Zuko and Katara, that's easy.

First, they have both had a hard time being accepted. Zuko was originally a failure as a fire bender (in comparison to Azula) whereas Katara was originally a failure as a water bender (recall her training with Aang).

Both of them had to work hard to earn their talents (in contrary to Aang and Azula).

Second, both of them know what it is like to lose their mothers. For their whole lives, they had to endure "loss."

Third, both are idealist when it comes to justice (I'll explain this one in a bit more detail later).

With similarities, comes opposites.

First, fire and water are the most famous opposites in nature. As shown quite often, opposites attract quite well.

What better opposite is there than Fire and water.

Second, Zuko's most powerful technique (redirecting lightning) required him to have a solid understanding of the water culture. He went against his own ways as an individual of the fire nation to mesh with the water nation's secrets and he did this with splendid succession. Hence, accepting Katara and what defines her would have worked perfectly as he had already learned to accept a culture which opposes his own completely.

If you have watched the last episode carefully you would have heard that Zuko said:"I can´t believe that a year ago I was hunting you and now... we are friends".

At the beginning of the series Zuko was 16. At the end he HAS to be 17. Katara was also 14 and is now 15 and sokka was also 15 and is now 16. And Aang was also 112 and is now 113.

Toph got completely shafted. It's like the writers didn't know what to do with her as there is no resolution for her character in the series. I think the writers had originally intended to give us Tophaang, hence the swamp episode where Aang sees visions of toph, but at the last second, gave in to the dumbest potential pairing in the series (Kataang). On second thought, I think there could have been an interesting story for Azulaang (aang's compassion would have made up for her loneliness).

Bah. Kataang is a completely idiotic pairing. Why the writers thought it was such a good idea, I have no idea. There's absolutely no chemistry between Aang and Katara. Seriously, the writers never give us any reason to believe WHY Aang would have romantic interest in katara, nor vice versa. On the other hand, the potential for Zutara is limitless and is actually a gold mine from a writer's perspective. Lets hope the live action movie knows better than Bryke. :(

I think people are pairing up these four people by their age range. It's true that aang looks much younger than katara and therefore would look more age fitting with toph. But I dont recall any love affair between Aang and Toph, so Im getting the impression that Zutaraians are just pairing Aang and Toph together so they can make Zutara come true.
