As a kid I was amazed the first time I saw this car. Its styling was so ahead of its time. I was like WOW, a concept car had just jumped off the pages of Popular Mechanics! In a world of boxy cars, the Taurus really stood out. And what's even more amazing is that, 25 years later, it fits in with today's cars. Too bad most 86 to 91 Taurus' have been scrapped.
@Wingnutcaseman These cars Still Look AWESOME, My dad Saw one of these the other day and said he that Looks like a car from today. I Still see many of these around, Very ahead of there time in the 80's this was a HUGE Seller to in 1987 The sedan model Jumped from 186,000 sold in 86 To 375,000 In 87. I Guess everyone wanted one back then But Who could blame them I Would of wanted one to
I thought the 1986-95 design was so much better than the 1996-07 design, I remember being disappointed by the styling of the 1996 designs cause I thought it lacked the style of the previous models.
This was the first decent modern looking car FORD buit in many years of JUNK making. In a way the taurus marked a turnaround for the US auto industry. Still to this day Germans set the standards for quality, efficiency and design
Why do Ford Europe build better cars than Ford do in the US? The Ford Mondeo are a briliant car, why not put the Mondeo in production in the US? It handels great, and it got a great engine.
It's a bit depressing when you check the news and realize that cars from 1986 (including the Taurus) are now old enough to be considered "antique automobiles", considering many '80s fans feel that nothing after the '60s should be "antique". Time just marches on.
@pannoni1 Well the good part of that is, most surviving cars from the 80's are now old enough that they've graduated beyond "cheap old disposable car" status. The ones left on the road are generally well maintained by attentive owners.
The low budget, neglectful owner demographic is now mostly beating up late 90's cars. We'll see how many are left when the carnage is done.
I think this particular model is the quintessential "family car". When I picture the ideal All-American family, I picture them driving a first generation Taurus.
If I lived in American I would definately look into owning a first generation Taurus sedan or wagon. Both excellent looking cars as far as I'm concerned and so ahead of their time. The Taurus name is dirt in Australia unfortunatley because we got that ugly third generation one, -shiver-.
@AdamAus85 I was working at a Ford dealership here in the States when that model came out. I remember when they first started showing up all of us looking at it saying, "You're kidding, right?" Everything on them was round, even the bonnet release handle. Hideous.
@lothartheterrible Man I can imagine the looks on all your faces when that thing turned up. It's a shame, seeing as the original one was such a big hit. New one looks quite good though.
@lothartheterrible - one of our motoring writers described the third-gen Taurus as "an amazing cupholder with the rest of the car designed around it", or words to that effect.
I saw a taurus that looks EXACTLY like this one (except it's dark blue) for sale near me and it looks almost perfectr except for some clear coat on the hood. I should buy it lol its just like $500 i think
I'm a Honda fan and I have to admit that this wasn't only an innovation for that time, but it's also one of the better looking '80s cars, (the slightly redone '90s model looked awesome too.) I think they kinda ruined it after that until the latest model that looks good again.
I agree with you evan, they killed it in '96. Made it to round and boring. I like the new car but it's to big, and doesn't look anything like it did. Same with the Explorer that's ok but doesn't look anything like it did. I seriously doubt they will get back on top with either one.
These will just be memories forever....TAURUS.....Have you driven a Ford lately?
the last models of american cars,, are better than the european please.. and all the asiatic cars.. looks like the same... American cars I prefer, i live in south america... i think that Ford GM Chrysler need to expand more here.. the people prefer the american cars... good factured.. and.. the service and parts.. are less expensive than european cars or asiatic.. the engine maintence... and.. the american cars.. are built to have 1000,0000 miles in their bodys...
I see these today and they sure don't look like they came from 1986-91. The Taurus was ahead of it's time, and the 1991-95 Taurus was even better, until the fish came along and killed it.
Look at the run time 0:08 and 0:22 they mean it i LMAO love my 1993 Taurus GL WITH 142,465 MILES ON AND RUN LIKE NEW MONEY.....!!!!! TAURUS FOR US THANKS DETROIT
i wish ford was half what it used to be... i have a 2006 focus 5 speed and its a cheap piece of crap. only has 80k miles and the engine makes a horrible ticking sound, the cruise stopped working, acceleration is no where what it used to be and the dash and transmission were replaced at 34k miles. todays ford is s#$t my 96 talon has over 2x the miles and the engine PURRS
2004 Ford F150: 78k miles on it's v6, no problems and I work that truck hard. . I expect to get about 300k miles out of that truck. My dad has all fords for his construction business and they just keep going and going, hundreds of thousands of miles later... are Toyota trucks going to be any better at a much higher cost? I just don't see how. Buy American and stop buying based on what Consumer Report says! This is not 1980! Reliability levels have changed!
This just goes to show you how far ahead of its time the first gen Taurus's design really was. Even to this day the first gen Taurus still looks modern.
@ChadTaylorCanDoIt You mean success in the US? They've been doing awesome everywhere else. They're just NOW having the common sense to finally bring their awesome European cars here. The Taurus, Escort, Fusion, and Focus all come from the same European line (Taurus designed here in US, but derived heavily from Euro Escort) Ford just became too unfocued in the US market after the early 90's. TBH, I think everyone was. Did everyday people want minivans? Trucks? Midsize? Luxury? Small sedan?
Compare the cheesyness of this jigle to half the car commercials of today where you either see stupid CGI that dosen't make any sense or other types of stupidity.
It also sounds like the voiceover in the middle was re-recorded for this version too. Funny they say "North American Car" when it was never built in Canada. I still remember the sticker in our Sable reading "Proudly built in Chicago"
Yes, but this ran on Canadian television, where they sang "A North American Car", this US version just says "An American Car". I thought it was weird that they re-recorded that just for us when it was an American car all along (North American yes, but more specifically American)
