@JoJoQwenty I use to love metalllica until i compared there work towards other thrash metal bands. And they fallen from grace so hard i wonder why they were inducted in the hall of fame. And the Eric Peterson Alex Sholnick combination trumps James and Kirk. I was pissed when guitar world but them at number 2 and Eric and Alex so low in the list
I would have to disagree, because the big four are the bands who led the thrash metal movement. Testaments first album didnt come out until 1987. By that time, metallica was already a lot more popular and they were about to release their fourth album. Even though Testament has stayed true to thrash, i dont think they had as big of an impact on the world than Metallica.
@TropianTV Testament never really changed direction, they just changed colours, they`ve always made kick-ass heavy metal-ish music, their skill exceeds Metallica by lightyears, i think Metallica are a bunch of douches, overrated as fuck and so forth, made intensly great music in the 80`s, 90`s they were just "another" band, so comes 00`s and they`ve just been piss-poor pathetic idiots.
Can`t respect Metallica anymore, Testament is the way nowadays.
The thing you have to understand lungduck is that true metal fans are very passionate about their music. I like the blues. But would I pick it over metal? Hell no...but a lot of people would say BB King is better than Alex Skolnick. I disagree with that statement but after all - I'm a die hard metal fan.
noisy amp!! i wish i could hook up with eric to fix his shit!! could be the lights, cord, etc. i have a couple real bitchen amp mod jobs coming up from an old school super awesome punk band...it would be real nice to work on testaments gear!
@mainehaula are you fucking kidding me dude?? why such an asshole comment. why dont you re-read what i wrote. i said i wish i could get my hands on his amp to clean up the noise. i own an amp repair shop and have some cool clientele. many different genres of music come thru my shop. eric would kick your ass if he read your comment. i can tell you he probably has some favorite punk bands in his cd collection, along with other genres of music.
@mainehaula also, i can tell you that there are many punk rock songs that blow away some testament songs and vise versa. you are just pissed cause there arent a lot of "all ages" punk shows, so you are limited to anything not in a bar situation, where you provide proof of age at the door. not to mention punk guitarists use the same amps eric does you fucking moron.
@mainehaula how do you cope with alex being a jazz player??? it must pain you deeply. do you still listen to testament knowing alex is a jazz player? oh wait, i probably shouldnt compare shitty jazz to metal. yeah, you probably only listen to Low or The Gathering, huh? See where i am going with this? You sound like a fucking idiot.
@mainehaula Stop being so consumed with my comment you shitbag. For someone who"so called"owns an amp repair shop.....you sure gotta lot of time on your hands.Fuckoff!!
@mainehaula yes i do own an amp repair shop. and lately, i have had some extra time on my hands. finally, a break. i have a cornford hurricane amp from the Ernie Ball Factory jam room, which they (the Factory) was recommended to have me repair their amp. what do you have? maybe if you are nice i will share my website with you and educate you.
I hung out with Eric a bit last Summer when they played the Beach. Really cool guy and FUCKIN' A has he really turned on his lead playing. No longer a kick ass rythm player but now a shredder as well!! AWESOME EROCK!!! \m/ \m/ \m/
eric fucking rocks and sooooooo hott but waz hotter back in 1995 but like i tolled u rockerz he is stel hott ....... ; ) I LOVE U ERIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@electriccrown82 IMO testament is way better than anthrax and deserve a place in the big 4 instead of them. heck these riffs are better than slayer or megadeth I feel. better song structures
@electriccrown82 dude hes underrated as lead too my brother. part of me thinks that eric saved metal! he is the backbone of Testament. who would alex skolnick be if there was no Eric Peterson? he is unstoppable.
I like Eric Peterson now that I got to hear him play. His style is interesting. I love his Dean Old Skull V guitar too. I'm a big fan of Dean guitars. Getting a Dean EVO Special guitar for christmas and then letting my bro have my Dean V guitar.
i love Testament. i dont think i'll ever be able to play along with the album of Testament. just look at Eric's hands. that would be extrelmly difficult for me to do. i just stick with the chord progressions, and fast picking with barring shit.
The tekneeks are not mutually exclusive. Move from the wrist and/or shoulder to change strings, move the digits to get aroun strings. One tekneek augments the other. However, the more joints deployed the harder to co-ordinate them. SOmetimes the missing "ingredient" in playing a riff or passage cleanly is to add a "twitch" of the digits.
Holy crap at his picking style...he alternates with his thumb and finger rather than his wrist or arm...that is like the holy grail of bad technique. I guess that explains why he cannot shred like Skolnick.
Inspite of that he is still one of the best rhythm players in metal today, he has a phenominal grip on how to groove his riffs and I love the way he uses harmonics.
No. You will not find a single proffesional guitarist who will agree with you there, thumb is NOT better than wrist or arm. I have not seen a single shredder who picks with his thumb like that, all of the best alternate pickers like Rusty Cooley, John Petrucci, Malmsteen, Angelo Batio, Theodore Ziras, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai etc etc etc use either their wrist, their arm or a combination of the two. There is a certain speed you can reach using just the thumb and finger and you can get no faster.
Having technical ability of your instrument is important yes. Beethoven could not have played any of his pieces without being able to play fast, Alex could not have played any of his amazing solos without being able to play fast etc. As a musician I think you should get your technique as good as it needs to be to fascilitate whatever ideas you have. Just think of some of the crazy riffs Eric could have made if his technique was as good as Alex's.I guess its also why alex does most of the solos.
You're not exactly right, I have seen a video on Youtube of a Japanese shredder who alternate picked using his thumb and finger. I'll try and find that video, though I have no idea of the guitarists name.
Anyway, to me, using your thumb and finger is probably much better than using just your arm for alternate picking. Though it is quite bad I can't imagine it creates as much tension in your muscles as alternate picking with solely your arm does.
Well if you can find it i would be very interested to see....the only person i have seen use it fairly well is Buzz Mcgrath, but he cannot alt pick faster than about 170 bpm and with that technique probably never will be able to.
When I say using your arm I mean the elbow really, it is certainly NOT a bad technique...Rusty Cooley and Matthew Petrolpolous both use it and can alt pick up to around 300 bpm...although its a combination of elbow and wrist... Either way thumb and finger is the worst.
Look if you don't know what you're talking about, don't bother posting. Just because you haven't seen a technique being used to good effect does not make it the worst.
Well I have been through music college at goldsmiths and teach guitar..I do have a vague idea of what I am talking about, go to any music college/guitar teacher and ask them about that technique. I guarantee you all of them will tell you it is a very very bad idea.
You clearly have no idea about guitar playing as that video you just linked me to the guy was using his wrist NOT his fingers, like every shredder I have ever seen.
so your saying that using your fingers to alternate is a bad idea all the time and you can't use it for any riffs at all? just wondering I figured i would ask somebody who would surely know. also I'm trying to teach myself music theory and i have a few questions if you don't mind my friend.
Yeah I would strongly advise against it! You can get to an ok standard with it but you will never really be 'very good', it will also probably take alot longer to make any progress.
Sure ask any questions you have!I would be happy to help! I advise sending it as a personal message thing rather than a comment box as you are then not limited to the 500 characters. Learning theory is really usefull and not as intimidating or difficult as you may think :).
But since you do seem like you're more knowledgable than me, and much better at guitar I'll let you pass.
Overall though I guess it is the hardest picking technique to learn to use efficently, so in that sense I guess I can see how it could be considered the worst.
(Man I must be setting some kind of record here, replying 7 months after the fact)
Hah that is quite a bit later but I still disagree, the movement is coming from his wrist in that video too....sure there is a tiny bit of movement in the fingers, no one has 100% pure technique not even gilbert but the vast majority of the movement is coming from his wrist. Watch the top of his hand in the vid you sent, I am 100% positive he is picking from the wrist.
Sorry once again I disagree, he is picking from the wrist! His technique is actually pretty similar to malmsteens, the movement is very slight and non as exagerated as others but still very much from the wrist. In the video you just linked it is harder to see as the quality of the video is poor and the camera is not zoomed in, hence in the ones you sent earlier where it is zoomed on his hand it is alot more clear his wrist is doing the work. Look REALLY closely at his wrist.
Wath this video of his watch?v=KfYZF8gL5Yo&feature=related
You get a much better angle on his hand at certain points and he also plays some slower passages where he exagerates the movement a bit so you get a good look at it he is definately using his wrist. In particular check out the angle you get at 40 seconds in when he does a fast picking passage, you get a great shot of his wrist there. Small precise movements.
He does in fact use his wrist for the slower passages. But I feel the video you posted isn't too good, because while it is zoomed in, it isn't fixed, and I don't think its a good angle.
Anyways have a look at this video again:
watch?v=OznLG2N3nfQ
go to around 3:27 when he picks a bunch of notes leading up to the high note. look at his hand when he picks those notes. Don't just look at the top of his hand. Look at the whole hand. especially bottom.
If he used a completely different technique for playing mid/lower tempo stuff to when he played fast then he would be VERY sloppy. You dont just jump from one to the other at different tempos...if you cannot play slow with one technique then you will not be able to play cleanly fast either.
Although the one I sent does not have a fixed angle occasionally it zooms DIRECTLY on his wrist so you have a clear view of the movement, if he is using wrist picking then that is the angle where it will be
I've seen tons of players switch techniques mid playthough. Most common example being wrist for slower stuff, and arm for the faster, so I don't know what you're talking about there.
But anyways I've sent Takayoshi Ohmura an email asking him about his picking technique so hopefully he'll reply and settle this once and for all.
I have not seen someone make a change from out right wrist to out right arm. People like rusty cooley use wrist and arm(elbow really) for mid to highish tempo stuff but upon hitting the really crazy speeds of around 240/260 bpm 16ths change the ratio a little so that the elbow is doing more work but I have NEVER seen an outright change (at least not with the really high class shredders anyhow). Muscle memory simply does not work like that, clean playing at speed is developed by practicing very
slowly over and over again making sure your technique is consistant till muscle memory kicks in then you can slowly build up the tempo. If you suddenly radically change technique when you play fast your muscle memory simply will not be up to the task. You HAVE to have practiced it slowly first...otherwise you would get people who have never played guitar before instantly being able to shred, it does not happen.
As a side note you appear to have deleted two comments you wrote before I had a
0:27 That's the craziest alternate picking I ever saw. He uses no wrist whatsoever.

Actually its pretty much thumb>wrist>arm. As long as you do it properly.
vashbebop 2 years ago
There is a certain speed you can reach using just the thumb and finger and you can get no faster.

so?? Is faster important? no
viddelt 2 years ago
Having technical ability of your instrument is important yes. Beethoven could not have played any of his pieces without being able to play fast, Alex could not have played any of his amazing solos without being able to play fast etc. As a musician I think you should get your technique as good as it needs to be to fascilitate whatever ideas you have. Just think of some of the crazy riffs Eric could have made if his technique was as good as Alex's.I guess its also why alex does most of the solos.

faster sure is important.....its fucken badass

MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
so your saying that using your fingers to alternate is a bad idea all the time and you can't use it for any riffs at all? just wondering I figured i would ask somebody who would surely know. also I'm trying to teach myself music theory and i have a few questions if you don't mind my friend.
fundamentalofhate 2 years ago
Yeah I would strongly advise against it! You can get to an ok standard with it but you will never really be 'very good', it will also probably take alot longer to make any progress.
Sure ask any questions you have!I would be happy to help! I advise sending it as a personal message thing rather than a comment box as you are then not limited to the 500 characters. Learning theory is really usefull and not as intimidating or difficult as you may think :).

Actually he does use his fingers.
Here's another video where you can see better:
watch?v=Xh95NkU40Fo

MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
He picks the first note of the pattern with his wrist, but everything else he does mostly with his fingers.
Anyways here's another vid (last one I promise), I'm pretty sure you won't be able to refute this one:

Sorry once again I disagree, he is picking from the wrist! His technique is actually pretty similar to malmsteens, the movement is very slight and non as exagerated as others but still very much from the wrist. In the video you just linked it is harder to see as the quality of the video is poor and the camera is not zoomed in, hence in the ones you sent earlier where it is zoomed on his hand it is alot more clear his wrist is doing the work. Look REALLY closely at his wrist.
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
Wath this video of his watch?v=KfYZF8gL5Yo&feature=related
You get a much better angle on his hand at certain points and he also plays some slower passages where he exagerates the movement a bit so you get a good look at it he is definately using his wrist. In particular check out the angle you get at 40 seconds in when he does a fast picking passage, you get a great shot of his wrist there. Small precise movements.
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
Well he doesn't use his fingers exclusively.

But anyways I've sent Takayoshi Ohmura an email asking him about his picking technique so hopefully he'll reply and settle this once and for all.
vashbebop 2 years ago
I have not seen someone make a change from out right wrist to out right arm. People like rusty cooley use wrist and arm(elbow really) for mid to highish tempo stuff but upon hitting the really crazy speeds of around 240/260 bpm 16ths change the ratio a little so that the elbow is doing more work but I have NEVER seen an outright change (at least not with the really high class shredders anyhow). Muscle memory simply does not work like that, clean playing at speed is developed by practicing very
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
slowly over and over again making sure your technique is consistant till muscle memory kicks in then you can slowly build up the tempo.
