The best thing is the way his remains were treated by those who found it. Different peoples travelled arnd the Himalayas over the course of time, with honorable intentions. Locals & those currently interfering with their political agendas in the name of science, need to respect that.
Did they search for the photo of Mallory's wife on him? Mallory said if he scaled Everest he would leave her photo on the summit. If no photo was found he would never have lost it so ........???
Did they leave his body there ? It seems like it.
Shame they got all emotionally fucked up in religious crap. This might have prevented a proper and scientific search of the area and the body. I mean it is just a body for Christ's sake!
@Lavenderblue333 I have seen him interviewed and i know what you mean.It just seems like a challenge that would push you to your breaking point and really see what you are made of.Which im my case would probably be base camp LOL.
@Lavenderblue333 Have you noticed what type of person climbs K2?They seem very serious and very smart. It makes you want to surround yourself with those types of people. Not the ones at work so much. How dont read or think deeply and complain about the most trivial garbage.
I would have pulled the whole thing out and at least tried to find something to bring back. People act so superstitious it would be different if the dude died like 10 years ago but damn 1920's.
@jackstained To the best of my knowledge, they did leave his body there. "The expedition conducted an Anglican service for Mallory and covered his remains with a cairn."--Wikipedia As can be seen at the end of this video. Unless someone has removed it since, it's still there.
He DID it, and Hillary knows! He must have found the picture of Mallory's wife. That is why kept on pointing out that that it is only a successful climb if you make it back.
And he made it "just" after 29 years later. Thanks to Tenzing Norgay.
well i dont have much words to say but i think before climbing he must have thought that if he dies he would have loved to die over there .but the thing is this that it needs a lot of courage to do such things which all cant do .
gosh, i remember watching this as an 8 year old and rushing to my bedroom on seeing the frozen body, now I watch these vids and think about the cold, harsh reality of being in such an environment and how our bodies can only do so much before we succumb to the inevitable outcome of death :/
"let's see if we can tell his story. Let's see if we can honor him. Let's see if we can get rich by finding his dead body. Let's see if girls will finally like us......."
just sad that they havent found Irvine's body, it is still up there undiscovered, whether or not that Chinese climber saw him the day before he died we'll never know.
Joe 1969812 just really doesnt understand what climbing mt everest really means, or where that actually was (very high). But c'mon guys dont be so mean to people. Thats why we have wars.
@joe1969812 your a fucking idiot you stupid fuck. Your probably some fat fuck having fantasies about climbing mountains and yet you say stop breathing so hard. I'd like to see you go up on a fucking hill without breathing hard.
Big respect to anyone who climbs or even attempts to climb Everest, especialy in Mallory and Irvines era (1924).. To this day 1 in 4 people to attempt Everest, die on Everest..
@joe1969812 the oxygens a quarter what it is at ground level so heavy breathing is perfectly normal..i bet you breathe worse than this when your running to the pie shop you fat prick lol
I read an article in the Sunday Times around 2 years ago that stated that a chinese climber had found the body of what was presumed to be Andrew Irvine and that an expedition was being planned by the same team who located George Mallory. As I recall the article inferred that Irvine was found, having presumably sought shelter, perhaps after becoming stranded after Mallory's fall?..as Mallory was the most experienced climber of the two.If found then the camera may be located.Did they top out?
there is an excellent one hour video on VeeHD. It's called "The Search for Mallory " I believe. Very moving ...and tells the story from the beginning. It's a true documentary with artifacts found on Mallory. The climbers are amazed, and nearly in tears looking at the things they found...a letter from his brother among others...
Can someone tell me what documentary this clip is from? It's similar to "The Wildest Dream" but I believe the footage in this one and the interviews are slightly different. I'd love to see more of it.
@smooshiebear80 The "body" used in The Wildest Dream movie is a mockup. The only people who know the location of Mallory's body are the members of the team that found him, and they all agreed to keep it a secret for the foreseeable future.
@Harry's Secret and mundster - you should try doing some real research. The evidence that proved the body was George Leigh Mallory is well known: Personal documents on the body all belonged to Mallory, and several pieces of clothing bore his name. Additionally, they had gotten permission from his family to remove tissue for DNA testing if the body was found, and before burying him they took a small bit of flesh from one of his arms.
@HarrysSecret - I was being a bit sarcastic, since EVERY account of the finding of Mallory's body I've ever read or watched has mentioned that Anker, with permission from Mallory's family, took a sample for DNA testing. As far as verifying whether they reached the top -from what I've read the only way will be if someone manages to find the camera Irvine was carrying, and there are recoverable images on the film. It's almost certain that if they DID get to the summit, they'd have taken pictures.
i assume that this research expedition team looked under Mallory's body for the infamous camera.....possibly the only photographic evidence of Malory reaching the summit....if indeed he did....the climbers are very respectful in this video.
Now I have finally seen this I'm truly disappointed. As I feared these guys seem to have wasted the trip. these guys were obviously not interested in recording the event if they did they cut a lot out. They could have taken a sample for DNA I have read no evidence that they did so, only that their is still confusion as to whether it was Mallory or Irvine. They were to worried disturbing his remains to do a thorough identification.
All the papers letters etc recovered from the body belonged to Mallory, they also recovered an altimeter from the body, and it was known that Mallory had such an instrument,it was also marked Mount Everest Expedition number two, which Mallory was on. What i found interesting is the fact that within the various letters, documents etc found on Mallory there was no photograph of his wife, and he had declared that he would place just such a photograph on the summit.
@AllanHunter1 Man, I still get goosebumps watching this every time. I imagine it was both amazing and humbling, discovering the final resting place of this amazing man. I am at present re-reading Messner's The Crystal Horizon, and am still very very curious as to whether they might have made it to the top. If they did, I have a hunch they might have gone partly up/down the Norton Couloir in order to avoid the second step. Even Messner found it technically easy climbing. Fantastic video! :-)
@AllanHunter1 Some have suggested that Mallory would have gotten out his wife's photo after he fell, holding onto it until it blew away. But he could just as easily have made it to the top and placed it there (where, also, it would've blown away after a time). Either way, it's probably been given to the winds up there.
they say mallory and irvine could have made it to the summit, and they were acctualy on the way down the mountain when they fell. looking at mallorys hands they apeared to be clinched into the ground like he was tryin to stop hisself. another thing mallory said to his wife he would leave a her picture on the summit and the picture wasent found on him.
People should read the very comprehensive and well detailed analysis of Andrew Irvine and George Mallory by Tom Holzel. It is titled: The Search for Andrew Irvine. It is to date the best report I have ever read on the subject. Holzel details the events as he believes it happended and bases it on the known evidence that is available. Now, to find Irvine and the camera.
Some body ever thought that the Chines may been follow Mallory's steps to the summit and hide any evidence that Mallory and Irvine made it to the summit like the Kodak camera. I think some of the chines would be alive and I hope they that the courage to say the truth about what they found on Everest before any one else went for that route.
From the Evidence shown, and The altitude the body was found, Mallory probably did make it to the top. If he didnt fall he would have been with Irvine, and wouldnt have a fractured leg, and besides, he was lower than he was last seen. My other prediction is he tried to get down because he lost Irvine and he lost grip and fell. With all my trust, RIP George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, You have showed us what you can do if we believe.
@Mengoraa - "Predictions" are made about something that may happen in the future, not about events nearly 80 years in the past. As far as whether Mallory and Irvine seperated, there were serious rope-jerk injuries to Mallory's mid-section which indicate he fell while still roped to Irvine.
It's incredible how, for a atheist like me, religious death talk has no effect whatsoever on him. Doesn't means I don't feel moved by the founding of the corpse

@cimawr Luckily for us, you seem to have already done some "real" research, so thanks for confirming that DNA testing has taken place.
