  • The best version I've seen so far on You Tube. I grew up on Country and this is the best country song I've every heard. Simply brilliant. +++++++++++++++++++.

  • If you've never seen that truly superb (and infuriating) documentary, "SHUT UP & SING", please do so asap, because the title and lyrics to this extremely moving, heartfelt, and haunting song will become very apparent to you very quickly after you see it. The behavior of countless country & western radio stations -- to mention C&W singers such as Toby Keith -- was absolutely disgraceful and pathetic.. one of the most radiant examples of nationwide censorship/mass/mass hysteria EVER!! --John

  • @pluntze2001

A "documentary" completely under the DC control and you hold it up as the ultimate source of Truth in this?

    Really?

Here is ALL you need to know about the situation. Natalie Manes used her Freedom of Speech and star status to make political comments that were not well received by the majority of her fans. Those fans responded by no longer buying concert tickets or CDs and calling up radio stations to protest. Radio stations responded to the pressure.

    Freedom all around.

  • @Leonid3s

Well - Back then it was a pretty brave move to say something against G.W.Bush. There are not many musicians that obstruct themselfs in the common opinion about the worst president the USA has ever seen (Green Day did, Rage Against the Machine did, System of a down did, just to name a few). I don't know about you but they had the balls to say something against this moron - and they had to pay an UNJUSTIFIED price. Dixie Chicks are more Rock 'n' Roll than most of the other...

  • @Leonid3s ... wannabe, so called, "Rockers"... Just think about what was going on back then..... You don't need a documentary to see how fu**ed up it was.

  • @DomBird23

Speaking as one of those people, my first reaction to Nat's comment was, "Why would she say this for the first time in public on foreign soil?"

There was nothing "unjustified" about the price Nat paid for her comment.

She forgot who paid her bills. And while a small percentage demonstrated publicly against Nat and the DC, the vast majority remained silent and voted with their wallets.

Nothing "unjustified" about that. In fact, absolutely predictable

  • @DomBird23

And for the people that hated Bush, Nat's comments were solid gold.

The problem for the DC was... their fans did not share their opinion.

Your fans buy your CDs, concert tickets, merchandise and effectively pay your bills.

Nat forgot that and it cost her and the DC.

If the DC fan base had been mostly "I hate Bush" people, this wouldnt have mattered.

Instead, the DC fan base is heavily pro-military, with many either in the military or directly related to someone who served.

  • @pluntze2001 And as it turned out she was right. They came to Canada and we showed them all the love we had. Radio stations played their songs full time,it was great .

  • You guys kick ass, always have, always will!

  • Group sucks!

  • Wow, they sound GREAT in this tune. Natalie sings her ass off here! Obviously this song has tremendous meaning for these ladies, and agree with their opinions or not, you can't help but appreciate their talent.

  • god they're good!!!

  • Hey Dixie Chicks please come to Holland!! We all agree with your views here and even people that dont wont let that influence their choice to listen to your music!

  • THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD THIS SONG WAS IN STORYTELLERS AND IMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS GROUP!

  • makes me fucking cry

  • Do radios still (2012) not playing their songs?? Cuz I'm from Brazil and I don't know what happens in US

  • @xDarthur

Not any I am aware of. I am sure there are some somewhere, but the Dixie Chicks are has-beens at this point.

    Sad, but there it is.

  • @Leonid3s Really sad.. I listened to their music for the firts time a few weeks ago and just loved it! Thank you!

  • @Leonid3s *first

  • @Leonid3s Ohh.. they don't even tour anymore?!

  • @xDarthur

They have tried a couple of tours since ... the last one was summer 2010 I believe. They opened for The Eagles. They were scheduled for 8 shows and had to cancel 2 because of poor ticket sales. The others failed to sell out, so I am told.

Couple of years back they put out a "best of" album. It stalled at #37 on the Country charts.

You can still buy their albums though. Good news for you, they are probably selling for a significant discount.

  • @Leonid3s You were right.. it is really sad! I like the discount part though hahahaha! Thank you.. again!

  • We're With you no matter what, Dixie chicks <3 With love from Canada <3

  • POWERFUL!!! Love you Dixie Chicks! xo

  • Wow!

  • They sound as they look*. Smashing!

*Unlike the Coors who just look good.

  • Love it!!

  • Gives me chills every time! ;)

  • great performance!

    are they still makin music?

  • my favorite DC song...

  • True Country women are the Dixie Chicks. Not going to back down, not even in the face of our community's right wing ignorance.

_Born and bread in the hollers of Appalachia. Sad to see that the ten gallon hat country folks have hijacked true Country music. Dixie Chicks are the real deal.

  • Ladies you are my heroes!

  • This performance is just amazing!! <33

  • Comment removed

  • All I can say is "WOW". Not only to this amazing performance but to the idiotic negative comments. Since when is hating the President the same as hating America or the Military:? Shall we take a poll these days and see who will admit to liking the President? History has since shown that BUSH did rush into war and under false information...WMD's that didn't exsist. I come from a military family and I happen to think the DCX are brilliant. Those TK lovers are about as deep as their red solo cups.

  • @gregsnow31768

Was with you up til you started bashing TK.

Lots of people like lots of different types of music. Just because you dont like it, doesnt mean everyone that does is an idiot.

  • This song got me through one of the hardest time of my life. EVER. I listened to you all belt out my own agony over some lost friendships that were the most bitter I'd ever experienced. I have 4 kids - my daughter was at college, but my 3 sons and my DH would creep through the kitchen about every 2 or 3 days for months when I would listen to this as loud as my system would tear out and sing along with the Chicks while I cooked and cleaned and tried to rebuild my broken heart. U said it ALL.

  • STELLAR!!!! By this time I'v forgotten what you've said. INCREDIBLE SONG!

  • I miss them playing together.

  • thank you for writing music...xxxx

you guys dont realise how many people can connect with your lyrics

  • I love the song and I love them. Even GW Bush loves them.

  • I love the song and I love them.

  • when was this done recently ? love them miss them

  • @KDWC90 it was recorded in 2006. its part of VH1s storyteller dixie chicks dvd which is avaiblable the 29th of november

  • Amazing song! This is one of my favourities song. Thanks

  • I swear if they tour to australia again, i will scream and be the first to get the tickets. I love them!

  • i sure hope they all come together again as i always did and always will like them regardless what Natalie said in the past which i agree with her 120%.look how the the other performers smeared Clinton,Gore during Clinton's presidency and even Bush himself smeared them and that was ok wasn't it? what Natalie said would make her look like she's praising Bush compared to what the other performers said during the Clinton presidency....

  • i love the dixie chicks.i wish they would make more music.amen for this song

  • They tried a short tour with the Eagles last summer (2010).

It went poorly. Lots of unsold seats and even had to cancel 2 of 8 venues.

Apparently the people pissed at Bush and glad Nat stood up for "what is right" are not buying tickets.

  • Great song. And I love their Documentary "Shut Up And Sing" about free speech and standing up for themselves in life. It took a lot of courage. And I'm one who doesn't even care much for country music. Note - if you like this anti-Bush song, then you have to see/hear the best Bush-truth one of all time by Pink: "Dear Mr. President" ....

  • Love their music and they always seem to sing the way I'm feeling at the time

  • I'm mad as hell too n still waiting! GREAT SONG

  • I'm mad as hell too n still waiting! GREAT SONG

  • Omg This Was Uploaded on the 10th of NOVEMBER THIS YEAR?! Omg Are they on TOUR?! I would travel too the other side of the world too see them!!!!!!!

  • What location or on what even was this recorded...?:-)

  • Inspired

  • Cool ! Hi iDOL Mariah :))

  • Amazing!

  • great!!! this is how i feel! lol not ready to make nice!!!

  • They say, time heals everything; but i'm still waiting.

  • they are AMAZING <3 so good, natalie has an amazing voice !

  • fuck all you haters!!

  • Just for David

  • so proud of these girls. free country. free to our opinions, free to be period. fathetr is wwii vet. he GAVE me that freedom.

  • P.S. As a "done that" and "been there," "Card and Scar carrying Veteran, I still love their music, however, the short fat chick and her views or opinion were at the least inappropriate for the time in history and place. You and Jane Fonda and the good folks from the Westboro Baptist Church ... are probably on the front line waving and cheering at the Veteran's Day parade and flaunting it in our face, to all those brave men and women (right or wrong) who served.

  • it shouldn't be about their statements. it should be about their music. and i love natalie's voice. and i agree, bush sucked!

  • they say time heals everything, but i am still waiting :)

  • Great music, however, I'm not ready to make nice for your

"Asinine" comments either. how's it working out for you? LOL!

  • theyre back!

  • Thumbs up for The Big Dog Daddy Toby Keith!

  • nyssssshhhh!!!!!1

  • Love the Dixie Chicks!!!!!!!!!.... so much of freedom of speech.... They are entitled to their own opinion just like everyone else!!!!

  • I served for 13+ years for their right to have free speech, weather I agree with what they have to say or not. I may not agree but will defend to the death their right to say it!

  • @nwosukz Since nobody listens to them anymore that's why you're commenting on their page and that's why after this video being up for only 4 days it has over 132k views?

  • @nwosukz fuck you shit head!!

  • @nwosukz fuck you

  • The Dixie Chicks: Hating GW Bush Before It Was the Trendy Thing to Do.

  • I like the Dixie Chicks music wise. But personally I don't care for the short fat one. She has the right to say what ever she wants and I have the right to decide not to listen to their music. Freedom of speech does not protect you from others making a personal choice not to like you any more.

  • freedom of speach is the same thing as innocent till proven guilty...doesnt excists.. we do and say what others want to hear..over some stupid words every one hated these ladys...hell she should of said more then what she did...bush got people killed over oil...but no one mouthed him...but these wonderfull ladys spoke there mind and got threaten...wheres the justic in this world......

  • @wolfie69ca and the funny thing is that, what Natalie said about Bush was down right innocent compared to what others said about him during and since. Is not like she said "George Bush hates black people." like kanye did.

  • @wolfie69ca freedom of speech just means there are no legal consequences for speaking your mind as long you are not defaming anyone. There were never any charges brought against Natalie or the group for the comments made. Like it or not, that's freedom of speech and it's alive and well. Perhaps you want a law that ensures people like you no matter what you say. That's what doesn't exist.

  • @wolfie69ca

Bush got people killed over oil? Really? Where is the oil? Gas around here is almost $4/gal. Since we have paid with lives and blood... where is our cheap gas?

Ohhh.. that's right.. We didnt get the oil the Liberals were screaming we were fighting for.

BTW, Obama has been President 3 years now. We still have troops in Iraq, which he promised to bring home "first thing" and only a few months ago did he manage to get "most" of the troops home.

    Obama after oil too?

  • @Leonid3s ...Why don`t you stop crying about the price of a gallon of gas in the USA.

$4 for a gallon is the equivalent to a give away compared to what we have to pay, here in the UK.

We`re paying $9.40 when converting English pounds to USA dollars!!

Think yourself lucky that you get it so cheap!!

Not surprised that the USA is the worlds biggest carbon polluter when they have fuel so cheap!! Bunch of Wasters, plain and simple!!

  • @smithdog1965

What you pay has nothing to do with what we pay.

The point was the excuse the liberals gave that the US was going to war for oil.

So, here it is, MANY years later, several years after Obama took office... and I dont see any of that oil we went to war for.

In other words, the Liberals LIED.

But, hey, they had good intentions and it made a great sound bite, so it is alright to lie under those circumstances, right?

PS, all that carbon used to be part of the biosphere. LOL!

  • @Leonid3s ...So what are you trying to say,if any country has oil reserves the USA will make up any excuse to invade it for the USA own gain?? Thats shameful!!

Do like the rest of the world and buy your oil,not invade and bomb the shit out of countries with oil!!

The USA is slowly but surely alienating itself from the rest of the world with it`s bully boy tactics regarding countries with oil.

  • @smithdog1965

"So what are you trying to say?"

Which part of what I said is even a little vague?

If English is not your native tongue, then 1) I applaud you for learning another language and 2) you get some slack for possible translation errors.

If English is your native tongue, then you have a lot fewer excuses for being obtuse.

    So, which is it?

  • Liked them when they stuck to music... They thought the liberals would back them, they did for a few months...... its a shame I really enjoy their music, but wouldn't give them another penny.

  • Liked them when they stuck to music... They thought the liberals would back them, they did for a few months......

  • Screw all republicans, their ignorant!

  • Good for them to speak their minds apologetically. That is what democracy is supposed to be about. And shame on anyone who claims to support democracy and free speech but want to silence any opposing views.

  • @sequel1974

That was supposed to be unapologetically.

  • okay. regardless of what they said, they were still a good group. regardless of what happened, listen to this again, and realize how amazing they are as a group. if you don't agree, with this, then that's you. but from my point of view, this is an absolutely perfect performance.

  • I've missed the Dixie Chicks. I was too young to understand why they broke up, but I missed the hell out of them.

  • i welcome back the dixie chicks. theyve always had good music. last song i ever herd from them was traveling soldier. very shortly it was pulled off the radio. im happy that the local radio station i listen still plays some of theyre songs.

  • They should just go away. It's not the fact that they spoke up or expressed an opinion, it's what they said, how they said it, and who they said it to. Period.

However, whoever the loser, trash was who threatened the life of a child should have their private parts set on fire and then have the shit beat out of them. If you threaten a child you are lower than low and not worth accepting into a civilized society.

  • @lawztech i agree but in all honesty THEY didnt say it. natalie did. the other 2 werent even a part of the picture they are just guilty by association.

  • so good

  • i thought they broke up!!! yaay they didnt!

  • they have amazing voices ! so talented !

  • Absolutely amazing performance. The hairs on my arms still stand straight up during this song!

  • they need to make a new album and come back strong

  • I'm just happy to know there's at least one country act who doesn't equate military adventurism with patriotism or the erosion of civil liberties with freedom.

  • Sorry, I thought this was a MUSIC video, not a press conference on dumb bullsh- that happened years ago. I'm actually going to sit back and watch this music video, because that's what I clicked on the video for.

  • The Dixie Chicks are always up there for me! Love them!

  • what did they even say that was so bad?

  • @boohawk13 ''During a London concert ten days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Maines said "we don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States (George W. Bush) is from Texas". The statement offended many Americans, who thought it rude and unpatriotic, and the ensuing controversy cost the band half of their concert audience attendance in the United States. -From wiki lol.

  • @Rads021 I am ashamed of him... at that time, i was 10 years old. seeing those towers fall into a cloud of dust and flames put me to tears, but i never did agree with the war. revenge is not an answer, it just costed more and more innocent lives.

  • @Rads021 oh thanks :)

  • Listening to country n to their songs is the best remedy to let go ya pain and sorrows ..... coz it give u happiness and loneliness go bye bye ... love ya'll Dixie Chicks......

  • these girls are absolutly amazing and i love them<3 they are pure talent

  • I used to listen to country music on the radio. When those stations malevolently stopped playing Dixie Chicks music and so many people spewed such hatred toward the Chicks, I decided I didn't want to be associated with those kinds of people in any way and stopped listening forever.

  • wait who is hank?

  • I don't understand why people got so pissed she is entitled to her opinion and threatening them and their familes especially the children is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • okay so when i was a little kid i looked up to the Dixie chicks so much that i named my dog Dixie. And im a violinist so i love listening to the music... even though they made mistakes their still my favorite people. and i look up to them as amazing artist.

  • im named after natalie portman

  • What venue are they at, and when was this filmed? Anyone?

  • I love the band. I've been listening to them forever. Everyone has their right to an opinion, and I agree with theirs. If someone is leading you into a hole so deep that you can't breath, break out and show them who you are. Show them we wont take it. Whether it hurt some or none at all. I love the Dixie Chicks. I love the way they carry themselves. They are true inspirations.

  • ITS SAD TO SAY WE AS AMERICANS MUST LEARN TO MIND OUR OWN BUSINESS,WE CAN NOT POLICE THE WORLD OR TELL OTHERS WHATS GOOD FOR THEM. WE HAVE MANY PROBLEMS HERE AT THE HOME FRONT WHICH WE NEED TO DEAL WITH. LETS CLEAN UP OUR OWN BACK YARD. THIS WAS ONCE A GREAT COUNTRY UNTIL GREED TOOK OVER AND WE LET JUST ANYONE WALK IN HERE & STAY,WE FEED THEM, TAKE CARE OF THEM,EDUCATE THEM WITH THE WORKING CLASS TAX MONEY. WE HAVE TAKEN ON TO MUCH AND TO MANY AND NOW TRUE AMERICANS ARE HURTING,AMERICA WISE UP

  • yeah Hank needs to relaxx, But the chicks are hot and maybe the best female group ever ! Check out on YOU TUBE FREDA HE GAIN THE WORLD BUT LOST HIS SOUL,

  • I'm not mad about their personal opinion. Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing and we as Americans are blessed to have it. I'm just mad they went over seas and publicly bashed our president. We're supposed to take pride in our country and present ourselves as a united front. It's just sad really... I'm not saying I agree with everything or they shouldn't voice they're opinions, but have some pride and learn there is a time and place for everything. London bashing America's president isn't it.

  • @rebven I don't normally post on here but I had to say after reading alot of these posts, thank you so much for being one of the few that has any common sense whatsoever as to why they were treated the way they were. Freedom of Speech is for us in OUR country and we can stay over here and bash our President and politicians all we want but you don't go to another country and bash them, that's just wrong. United We Stand, Divided We Fall!! They are blessed with beautiful voices, use them wisely!!

  • Toby Keith says what he wants & makes no apologies for it. Not to mention there was an article in Rolling Stone magazine written by Ethan Hawke about Kris Kristofferson who is an army Veteran of this country not to mention an extraordinary singer, songwriter & actor. At Willie Nelson's 70th birthday celebration Toby Keith who is supposed to be all patriotic & shit disrespected Kris Kristofferson. FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS NOT JUST FOR REPUBLICANS!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for your service soldier but your buddy died for no reason. Fuck War. Fuck Israel.

  • I applaud these ladies for taking a stand. America speaks of freedom of speech, but aparently it's only freedom of speech when your speech is what they want to hear. What they supposedly said turned out to be true. And besides If someone is going the wrong way I don't intend following them, dignitary or not. What kind of person teaches their kids to hate and threaten the lives of anyone especially a child. Such a person needs to take a serious look in the mirror and then make a change.

  • I applaud these ladies for makind a stand. America speaks of freedom of speech, but aparently it's only freedom of speech when your speech is what they want to hear. • @claudiajackson41

I totally agree! I believe everybody is well-deserved of speaking their mind - we built our country on such freedom! If somebody doesn't like what she said or what they sing about, they are free to turn around and go the other way; there is no sense in threatening them or banning their music. Besides, they NEVER said they didn't support our troops, they merely voiced disapproval of the hairbrained idiot that sent our troops over there in the first place. Troops are great!

  • @chandracmarie

They are also free to not buy their music or listen to stations that play them.

Stations sell air time to advertisers who want to reach the most listeners.

So, listeners stop listening to DC (as is their Right), advertisers chose to advertise on stations that did not play DC, to maximize their investment in advertising their products.

So, more stations stopped playing DC.

    It is all about Freedom.

Nat was free to say what she did. Just not free of the consequences.

  • Just shut up and sing!

  • We are not ready to make nice not ready to back down.

Sounds like what Saddam and Osama got to feel .

Dixie Chicks you got to feel not ready to make nice not ready to back down

    and where are you now

  • All they did was speak there mind and everyone turned on them . What the hell!

  • @woodmagick what happened!! D: i missed everything

  • @woodmagick it's not that they spoke their mind, it's the way they went about doing it. Then they basically thumbed their noses at their fans. Free speech? Absolutely! Just not a very wise business move. Most of their fans were conservative tea party types, not liberal "down-with-the-fed-but-we-have-no-solution" Occupy homeless camp-types...just saying

  • she has such a pretty voice i love this song

  • Am i the only one that thinks this song should have way more views?:s

  • they're back!!!!!!!

  • God, are people still not over this. look i fully admit i stopped listening to them after this point, not because of their beliefs but because all of their songs after that event had to comment on either the war or all the backlash and i honestly don't listen to music for that. i listen to music to forget my problems so none of their later songs worked for me. but my god people, get over it. your still bitching about something over 10 years ago.

  • Sorry sweetie...your in the wrong genre of music. To go to another country and dis the troops and president is a sure way to have all of country music pretty much hate you!! Country music and fans aren't that forgiving!! Sure you have your freedom of speech... but guess who gave that to you... THE TROOPSSSS :)

  • @bklounge1992 go back to school freedom of speech was given to people from the rebels who broke away from the rule of England. The government has laws and places people in charge to ensure that those rights are followed. The troops has nothing to do with the freedom of speech but rather protecting a country from enemies. At least if you are going to comment make sure you are informed and not brain washed.

  • i love you guys so much

  • Did you think real hard about that MROSEN62? Go back to Canada damn liberal

  • I hate you Dixie Chicks. Singers are not politicians!

  • Comment removed

  • @hankp123 Singers are citizens...and as such are hopefully allowed the "freedom of speech" that you have...so you hate them because....???

  • @c0k3chanel5 They have freedom of speech. Words hold power. People who do not listen to them because of what they said have the right not to...that is their freedom. We all make choices in life. The Dixie Chicks made a choice and they have to live with the consequences. I understand what you're saying that it shouldn't matter but obviously it does. Our actions matter. Our words matter. The Bible says to not speak evil of dignitaries--we should support our government--at least to outsiders

  • @4aheartChrist I'm sorry, but if we never spoke of our dignitaries than this country wouldn't be here.

  • @4aheartChrist ...Yes, the pen has been said to be mightier than the sword. But the most powerful part of democracy is speaking out against one's government when you are convinced that they are doing illegal and immoral acts. What do you suppose Jesus would think about all of the hate and intolerance on this message board? He too challenged the authorities, or the "dignitaries" ....peace, Cat

  • Dixie chicks, strong, powerful women, sticking to their word, music and values.

  • George W got us in a war that killed thousands of Americans-the bombers were in Afghanistan I am an atheist so I don't believe he will get his in heaven.

  • Absolutely positively amazing song and video!

  • I will not dislike a band because of their personal beliefs. Think about this!!! This song is in response to the death threats made against their children after Nat's comment. Who threatens a child in this country because of something a parent said? We have freedom of speech and Nat was more than welcome to use it against a president who began the ruin of our country!!

  • @smnferret

'F' u and these traitorous bitches. Too bad their kids lost their college fund when their moms ran out of Fleetwood Mac songs to rip off.

Thx for supporting Islamic radicals that want to kill you and your spineless comrades who are giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Learn to fight a war and win it like WWII, maybe you'll understand what peace is you ignorant liberal scum. Hooray for exercising my freedom of speech against you and these sluts! At least one of us earned it.

  • SuperAkula1 Your view is yours, giving you the right of free speach and you the right to spew such BS is fine. But sadly your mislead, and come across as not changing and fearful, hateful types like yourself are the world's biggest threat. talk like that might as well change your name to Osama Bin Laden, reserected.

  • @SuperAkula1 You just showed your trailor trash side. How dare you speak about anyone's child. WTG Dixie Chicks. With that mouth i hope your not a parent and if so God help your childre. What a role model you are.

  • @smnferret one person doesn't ruin a country.

  • @kmrw11 Don't want to but in but... think about history in general, perhaps focus in European history and reconsider that statement.

  • Comment removed

  • @kmrw11 in response, history shows one person can ruin a country!

  • @mikehobb1 i didn't know that there was a textbook on US history that had a whole chapter on how one president singlehandedly ruined our country, much less did i know our country was ruined. you must absolutely hate it here if you think the united states is ruined. shame on you for saying that. we live in the greatest country in the world - the most powerful country. it's sad to see how many people these days take that for granted, like yourself.
