  • Thanks for all your vids!!! Very help full and informative!

  • Hey man, just watched a bunch of your vids.. really appreciate all your musical insight!

  • Any suggestions to someone who cannot go to a music school?

  • Hay, I have the same peavey

  • I think music school is a waste of time if you want to be a performer, singer / songwriter.

Get out there and get gigs. PAID gigs.

  • @DavidCavanFraser Exactly, I know guys who are professionals ,making money, who barely finished high school and are not at the top in terms of musicality or theory. You are right on target. I see tons of kids walking around who went to school, but are broke while the guys who "went to school" playing live are making money!

  • @DavidCavanFraser The music school only expands your knowledge and helps you find your music style AND THATS IT. The musician has to build his own carreer. You can't make a carreer by running scales, or knowing all of them. You have to make music. You are definetely right. But to say it is a waste of time, it might be a little wrong, because it really expands your knowledge. Plus, you might get to know other musicians and trade experiences with them. My opinion though. Peace!

  • sir..could a person become a professional musician if he/she dosen't go to a music school?

  • you have to be tough!

  • very helpful,thanks!!

  • Good info. You should also check out talentwatch net. Great for the music artists.

  • Although I agree with your advise, and although I am only 16 and have very little experience with Life and the music business, the history of Rock bands and musicians shows that the most successful people didn't go to music school. :(

  • a lot of them wish they had though!

  • lol, especially the ones who didn't make it.

  • That's probably true if you just want to look at the famous rock bands but that's not even 1% of the people that are successful in the music industry. btw it's spelled "advice" :)

  • yeah sure within rock bands the best players did not go to musical schools but youd be damn surprised just how many of them were taught by the amazing players of the generation before them. great artists have a tendancy to create new brilliant artists :P

  • @XownedftwX Man, the one thing I'm struggling with is that does a songwriter for Pop and Hip Hop require any knowledge on composiion? I've been reading and all the books I read all refers to Rock and Classical like that's the real music.

  • im no expert but tbh i think you need to know music inside out to get anywhere in it even if its just theory and even the theory of styles your not even gonna play

  • what a songwriter needs is to develop the ability to consistently write excellent songs. music schools can give you helpful tools but its up to the writer to develop their own creativity. so, of course a songwriter needs composition knowledge, or else they would have no ability to compose...but it does not have to be formal

  • yeah but now kids need to get a college education know matter what we do

  • @leeea7x ???

  • @801332 Like which musicians specifically?

  • would you recommend any schools in the midwest area if i ever wanted to major, or minor, in music theory?

  • Did you go to college for music?

  • Hello averylicious22...

Yes, I went to The Musicians Institute in Hollywood California almost 20 years ago. I attended the faculty of Guitar, (G.I.T.).

    - Andrew Wasson

  • Did you learned "solfege", i mean how to read partitions without numbers ?

  • Hello nookies10,

I never studied vocal training to that degree. I did however, learn to read music notation to a fairly high level which included, "Rhythmic Solfege," before attending Music School.

    - Andrew

  • Hey, it would be really great (but it wil take a lot of time too) if you made Solfege lessons in videos.

    Just for the rythmic.

I play the guitar about 10 years now, I know how hard it is to keep a rythm when you begin playing (without a metronome).

I tried to learn music notation, and it was really easy, but at the end of the first year, i decided to stop 'cause I had not enough time to do it.

Sorry for the mistakes, I study English about 2 years now.

  • i'mgoing there for the summer shot program! i can't wait!! just thought i would tell you

  • @creativeguitarstudio wow thats about the time John Frusciante went there too!

  • i can't afford to go anywhere im dirt poor = [

  • i like how professional you are in your videos, and even in your comments. like I can really believe that you know your stuff, i mean, anyone can go on youtube and pretend that they're good and know about stuff, but you're clearly real and I appreciate that professionalism

  • so i go to a UC.

what sort of major would i go for?

  • Don't major in music, it's a waste of time. Major in something useful so that you can fall back on something because the majority of music majors just work day jobs. Making it big in the music industry requires connections and not so much the education

  • I'd second the music major being a waste of time. I think that most of the music majors that I know do actually end up as teachers, but the levels differ. Some are collegiate professors (perhaps still not paid well) or are freelance instructors, but it does'nt look like it pays well. I'm going for a music career too, but independently, not as a study science, whist majoring in math at my college, and that way, I've got something to fall back on.

  • so do you think a communication major would be good for this? or business?

  • Hello,

I'd suggest going for some business courses, especially marketing. As a musician, you will have to constantly re-shape how you market yourself over the years of your career. And, get out there and play gigs, even while in school. It is really important to get up in front of an audience!

    Andrew Wasson

  • one really good option is a Music Business Degree, the only college i know that has it is Belmont in Nashville, TN, My brother did that and he said it was a Good choice to get into the Music Biz. The Degree not only covers music but the business aspect of the trade.

  • thank you so much for your lessons and advices, they are really helpfull :) cheers from Norway

  • Great vid. shoulda woulda coulda on my part.
