@DavidCavanFraser Exactly, I know guys who are professionals ,making money, who barely finished high school and are not at the top in terms of musicality or theory. You are right on target. I see tons of kids walking around who went to school, but are broke while the guys who "went to school" playing live are making money!
@DavidCavanFraser The music school only expands your knowledge and helps you find your music style AND THATS IT. The musician has to build his own carreer. You can't make a carreer by running scales, or knowing all of them. You have to make music. You are definetely right. But to say it is a waste of time, it might be a little wrong, because it really expands your knowledge. Plus, you might get to know other musicians and trade experiences with them. My opinion though. Peace!
Although I agree with your advise, and although I am only 16 and have very little experience with Life and the music business, the history of Rock bands and musicians shows that the most successful people didn't go to music school. :(
That's probably true if you just want to look at the famous rock bands but that's not even 1% of the people that are successful in the music industry. btw it's spelled "advice" :)
yeah sure within rock bands the best players did not go to musical schools but youd be damn surprised just how many of them were taught by the amazing players of the generation before them. great artists have a tendancy to create new brilliant artists :P
@XownedftwX Man, the one thing I'm struggling with is that does a songwriter for Pop and Hip Hop require any knowledge on composiion? I've been reading and all the books I read all refers to Rock and Classical like that's the real music.
im no expert but tbh i think you need to know music inside out to get anywhere in it even if its just theory and even the theory of styles your not even gonna play
what a songwriter needs is to develop the ability to consistently write excellent songs. music schools can give you helpful tools but its up to the writer to develop their own creativity. so, of course a songwriter needs composition knowledge, or else they would have no ability to compose...but it does not have to be formal
I never studied vocal training to that degree. I did however, learn to read music notation to a fairly high level which included, "Rhythmic Solfege," before attending Music School.
i like how professional you are in your videos, and even in your comments. like I can really believe that you know your stuff, i mean, anyone can go on youtube and pretend that they're good and know about stuff, but you're clearly real and I appreciate that professionalism
Don't major in music, it's a waste of time. Major in something useful so that you can fall back on something because the majority of music majors just work day jobs. Making it big in the music industry requires connections and not so much the education
I'd second the music major being a waste of time. I think that most of the music majors that I know do actually end up as teachers, but the levels differ. Some are collegiate professors (perhaps still not paid well) or are freelance instructors, but it does'nt look like it pays well. I'm going for a music career too, but independently, not as a study science, whist majoring in math at my college, and that way, I've got something to fall back on.
I'd suggest going for some business courses, especially marketing. As a musician, you will have to constantly re-shape how you market yourself over the years of your career. And, get out there and play gigs, even while in school. It is really important to get up in front of an audience!
one really good option is a Music Business Degree, the only college i know that has it is Belmont in Nashville, TN, My brother did that and he said it was a Good choice to get into the Music Biz. The Degree not only covers music but the business aspect of the trade.
Thanks for all your vids!!! Very help full and informative!

I think music school is a waste of time if you want to be a performer, singer / songwriter.
Get out there and get gigs. PAID gigs.

Hey, it would be really great (but it wil take a lot of time too) if you made Solfege lessons in videos.
Just for the rythmic.
I play the guitar about 10 years now, I know how hard it is to keep a rythm when you begin playing (without a metronome).
I tried to learn music notation, and it was really easy, but at the end of the first year, i decided to stop 'cause I had not enough time to do it.
Sorry for the mistakes, I study English about 2 years now.
