One comment... IMHO flying on flaps so long (1500ft above) is not a good idea, you just producing drag, a specially when you flying in top of white arc.
The DA40 is probably the nicest flying aircraft I have ever flown as far as "feel" and handling. Very smooth and fantastic handling characteristics due to it's wing design. The downside is that this wing design isn't as stable as other aircraft which matters a lot when flying IFR. Great plane though. The only real downside is the limited useful load.
You have to use the brakes to turn. Both airplanes are great to fly. The DA40 is fast, and you can see out of it better. it also has a constent speed prop. I find it a little harder to deal with the prop, but both are easy to fly.
how can one not like a 172.... but on the other hand i havent actually found one that i didnt enjoy flying...... but as they said the 40 is easy to fly and actually nimble....
After flying it, or an Avidyne, no one wants to return to steam gauges. And now the artificial terrain and 'highway in the sky' are an incredible improvement to safe flying.
(almost)everybody can fly, but don't forget, that you have to aviate, navigate and communicate, which can be a lot more difficult than riding a trepel wheel bike
I still dont get what Diamond was trying to prove by sticking G1000's in something like the DA-40. To me, thats like pimping out the deck of an ultralight.
The DA40 is a great XC machine and is faster then a Cessna 172 and many other entry level singles. Why would they not put the latest avionics suite designed for singles in the plane. I fly a G1000 equipment DA40 and its the greatest thing ever. Not overkill at all.
I usually keep flaps down until 400ft AGL. You do get a tiny bit of sink when you bring them up but only momentary. The plane won't realy accelerate to cruise speed until you bring them up.
The DA40s fly extremely well. They are very smooth and responsive and the visability is fantastic. The light wing loading can make it a bit bumpy in turbulance and it can be a furnace on the ground in the summertime but its still a great airplane.

Does the da-40 use differential braking like the da-20 or can u control the nose wheel? thinking about flying it this week instead of the 172

G1000s are now the industry standard.

WOW, FLAPS WERE DOWN FOR A WHILE...
aviatorlegend2 4 years ago 2
The flaps were at T/O setting up to about 2000ft then retracted.
I thought the DA40 i flew was the only one with a faulty stall warner.. seems not! Love this plane though, a dream to fly.

Such a sophisticated looking plane, how does it fly? I want to get my pilot's license someday, and this is my dream plane.
