I think it's interesting that with all the wealth of knowledge a video like this can offer a person who may or may not have access to an experience like this, the most common response was some banter about the background music! Fabulous flying demonstration in a great airplane. Knowing how to do a spot on overhead is a great skill to have. I did one in a P51 a while back, it wasn't at idle cut off but a lot of fun, and great for the spectators on the ground
Nice video, done well. I actually enjoy the music in the background!!! In a positive note about the music!! many surgeons perform in the OR with background music. Some of my best work is accomplished with background music. Is it SAFE?? well depends on the Pilot, I think he did an awsome job. I would fly with him anyday of the week.
@TheChompeepe I agree, just depends on the person. I let my passengers listen to the radio while I listen to ATC only. I just enjoy the sound of the engine, wind, etc... This video is awesome btw. Maybe I would try this if I flew a faster airplane lol (C172).
Very nice...you can play music with auto cancel...Pipers dont have this!!! This was one very sweet approach. Nice job on the communication and controls.
@smacman68 the pilot is referring to the latest ATIS (Automated Terminal Information Service) broadcast for that airport, whack gives AWOS/ASOS weather information, altimeter setting, active runways in use, some urgent NOTAMS, departure / arrival procedures, etc. ATIS is recorded and broadcast at the bottom of every hour and each broadcast is given a NATO phonetic alphabet letter to identify it. eg an airport with latest ATIS information K, a pilot may say "inbound with Kilo" or "taxi to acti
I hear pilots say "...Cessna 1234 with hotel, request transition..." or "...Piper 1234 with lima..." What does "Hotel" and "Lima" mean? I know it's a reference to something.
@smacman68 what there referring to is current condition's on the runway its called ATIS. That gives you active runway, wind speed, and any other info a pilot must know. the names change every time they update so on contact you must tell the controller you have the "latest" info
Nice. Could have done without the music. I like to hear the engine, ATC, and all the little bells and whistles the cockpit generates. Other than that, great job flying. You made it look easy.
Obviously doable as demonstrated. But why? It's terribly uncivilized, has to be bloody murder to a person's ears, and just takes away the sophistication of peacefully joining the pattern on the downwind leg or the base leg, and making a respectable approach and landing peacefully. Why just fall out of the sky, when you don't have to? Just doesn't make any sense to me.

@BrianHA1 how in the world do you find that uncivilized? no one forced him to do the over head approach its what he chose to do... its like race car drivers you could call that uncivilized but that's what they chose to do. different strokes for different folks
Responce to clutchradisson: First off I know and much more than you. You are that guy all of us dred having to fly with especially on a trip lasting a few days. I bet you jerk off to the FAR/AIM, POM/POH/AFM/whatever you fucking like to memorize. Here is some reading for you. Look up the term "tool" in the urban dictionary....Douchbag.
@redsky084 your obliviously a kid thats never flown a plane.... no respectable pilot would talk like that...........Notice its 7:10 in the morning.... not a lot of traffic.....have a good day
Great video and the overhead approach is a trick we should have in our bag to get down quickly or land from a formation flight. On the music issue, I find that having XM or iPod music is great in cruise for staying alert on long flights. My personal practice is to kill the music at 30 minutes out from landing when I get in "arrival mode"; seats upright, radios tuned, approach briefed, etc.
Matth blah blah blah... Easy on the red ones young man. We all feel your pain/psychosis. Well actually, we don't. But it must be harsh watching people fly real planes up in the air whilst you ride Puff at night in your dreams. "Break right, you naughty reptile!". You tell him, Matt. Someday you too can fly a plane. Well, actually, maybe not. Oh and by the way, I DO fly a Cirrus SR-22 Gts 2004 Avidyne factory reman at 65hrs on the new one. Gorgeous airplane.
Sexy plane looks beautiful! how did u get the music playing lol while atc is not contacting you lol? thats pretty awesome! Btw I heard that the controls are really sensitive on the plane, is it true?
I agree with math below....please clutch, explain why dipshits like you use words like "break left/right" and "2g" turn while you flying a.....hold on I have to stop laughing....a CIRRUS! Wow! A 2G turn! Hold on there Iceman, this isn't fightertown usa haha! If I may may a suggestion for your next ego-inflating video, next time ask for a low fly-by of the tower. Try flying commercially and militarily first befoe you start wearing your aviators and fake bomber jacket like the rest of us. Numbnuts
haha you are one of those GA pilots that ATC laugh at .. you sound more "hip" and "cool" on the radios than a seasoned pilot flying something 10x as big as you. Why do you do it, dude? Why do you gotta try to "Sound the part" ??? hahaah
@b1cc2 Ya I doubt it dick head - a private pilot who flies for FUN is more successful? Eat shit bitch, you don't know what you are talking about. Where is YOUR private plane? Actually, better question - what background do you even HAVE?? Probably not one in aviation. Go back to flipping burgers you fucking pathetic loser!
@matthmatthmatth Man, do you enjoy being wrong or blindly lashing out? I'm an AMT/Commercial pilot. I was a crew chief on B-1s. You called someone out, moron, let's have your credentials. I can tell you're either a child or an idiot by the way you talk. Which is it? More specifically, you either live in a trailer park or are headed there when you grow up.
@b1cc2 You're a fucking liar. I've found comments of yours that are only a year old, and you tell a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TALE!!! STOP LYING BITCH, GO EAT SHIT!!
@matthmatthmatth Respectfully , he is the part. No faking here. I was more impressed with his communication skills rather than the flying. Sounds as if he were trained at one of the large academies. No one knows the skill level of this pilot. But I can tell that by how relaxed he is at the controls that he if confident, competent and alert, which means he must have alot of experience in these aircraft. Impossible to become this pilot in a few hundred hours.
@FujiR500 "Impossible to become this pilot in a few hundred hours." LoL, that's a silly statement. Depends entirely on the skill and aptitude level of the pilot.
Honestly, I thought your approach and landing was pretty slick! Turning 180knots into such a smooth bleed off and landing takes complete trust in a plane - but what a plane! Funny thing, Im about to buy a share in an SR20 next month - you've just made me even more sure of my choice in aicraft!
Question for you, the runway graphic on the main PFD as you're landing - how true to life is this? Could you trust it/use it on a foggy ILS approach - natuarally assuming you're within approach limits?
Haha I suppose, but if the FAA are anything like our CAA - most pilots despise them in terms of the fact that they charge for anything and everything just to make flying in GA that little bit more uncomfortable as time goes on.
The music is completely obnoxious. This isn't a fucking car - it's an airplane and you need to be alert to your environment. It is impossible to concentrate on anything with that music blaring, much less an overhead approach at 180 knots. Where is your head at, man? There is a reason cockpits need to have a sterile environment during takeoffs and landings. I give this pilot an "F".
@Transam941 Then you should ground yourself. Listening to music is at the very least distracting and at the very worst deadly. Do commercial pilots listen to music when they're flying? Nope. Why? Because it's DISTRACTING, asshole! You must be vigilant as to the condition of your plane and the environment at all times, and blocking the sounds of flying is just plain reckless. Pretty soon you'll be texting and watching internet porn on your laptop. Fuck off!
Several people I know, including some very high hour instructors and pilots listen to iPods and music in their aircraft. Radio Cut-In allows the music to be silenced should any transmission occur. Music on a long flight can be relaxing and actually help you enjoy the flight more.
A lot of new aircraft will come with a COM system that enables a line in, some even come with iPod docks built into the panel.
@ChrizRockster You can all tell me about how convenient it is nowadays to listen to music in the cockpit, but my point is not about convenience, it's about safety. And I'm not speaking of being able to hear ATC. I'm speaking of situational awareness, and it is a no-brainer that listening to music greatly decreases one's SA. What about that little noise in the engine you cannot hear? How about maintaining a train of thought during an approach? Every second counts, and distractions can be deadly.
There is no evidence to suggest that it is a distraction. Otherwise, manufacturers would not be natively supporting this equipment in new models? A lot of people are using iPads for charts, palmtops for GPS and such these days which I see as greater distraction than music - hell, even glass cockpits are a bigger distraction than the tranditional gauges due to a larger amount of information being absorbed!
@ChrizRockster Your reasoning is faulty. There would be no evidence of pilot distraction in the crash of GA aircraft due to a lack of CVR's, so there's no telling. But even a conversation prior to takeoff can prove distracting enough to kill. Witness Delta flight 1411 where the pilots were distracted enough by mere conversation with a stewardess to forget to set flaps/slats properly. Could music ringing in your ears cause a similar loss of concentration? Absolutely. Save it for your car.
I suppose - dont get me wrong, i'm not the type of person to listen to music whilst I fly. I didn't say that. Its just I know its supported in GA, its provided by manufacturers and its done by pilots of all levels across the world. This is not a fore or against argument, merely a statement of truth. I guess the only way to truely find out how fellow pilots feel about this, is to ask on a forum who listens to music during flight and what they think the safety risks are.
@ChrizRockster I'm wondering why the concept should even be considered, especially by the stolid bureaucracy in the FAA. Anything that takes away from the task at hand should be specifically proscribed, and I think this is one of those things. Asking pilots the the question of the equivalent of whether they can chew bubblegum and fly will be met with derision and puffing out of chests. "Of course we can!" Well, yes - until something goes wrong...
@ChrizRockster And I do not see how having a Jepp chart on your iPad or moving map on your GPS is a problem (unless they're too small to be practical). And if you cannot interpret your marvelous glass panel, I strongly suggest you read the damned manual and practice using it until you become comfortable with it, unless of course you're too busy playing air guitar during approach.
I fly a C172N currently, but have flown the Cirrus SR20 G3 GTS. Its a very fast machine and great if you wish to have that level of information for IMC etc. But I found that there is a lot of excess information on there which, really could do with being decluttered. Avidyne and G1000 both suffer than same traits - if you could switch on a virtualised 6-Pack of analogue instruments it would be great.
@beeroosterm Actually, Ive met airline pilots that listen to Shortwave radio while in the cruise. and some of them talk to amateur radio operators while in the cruise.
@srita764 I don't care. The pilot's fucking job is to fly the plane, and distractions are dangerous, especially in commercial flying. You want to listen to the radio? Do it in your goddamned car.
Nicely done! I've done one only once a few years ago. Out at Cable Airport, CCB, we avoid straight in approaches. My instructor wanted to get us down in a hurry one night to avoid some incoming weather, and took the opportunity to show me how it's done. (I think he had to pee too, jk)
Trans, thats not necessarily true. You can shock cool an engine at low altitudes as well. Hence why you always do engine warming during PFL's. This is to keep the engine warm and to stop shock cooling.
Nice! Never heard of these until seeing a debate on avweb yesterday. We don't do em in Oz I don't think. A couple of other observations: 1) that cirrus looks like two generations newer than the 172s I fly, aside from being almost twice as quick! 2) not sure about music playing in the terminal area. Even though that muting system seems good, I reckon it is desirable to have a sterile cockpit during the landing phase.
And why not a straight-in approach? An overhead looks fun and it's a good way of losing the airspeed, however, don't you risk overcooling the engine..?
2 g turn, so you mean a 60 degree bank coordinated turn? that should give you 2g's every time. wouldnt recommend low hour pilots to do that, over banking could be really bad at low altitudes for less experienced pilots.
Nice approach Clutch! I'm based out of KFFZ in Arizona and i'm thinking it's too busy for ATC to go for an OH approach, Just moved up into an SR22 this past summer...what a great aircraft!
Question for you, what are you using for your video and audio recording?
are u a CFI? Im almost done with my commercial and u seem to be more helpfull than some of my ex-miltary and veteran CFI's. well done! lmk if u r ever take a trip to KMSN or C29
I forgot to say: Would the 4 idiots that gave this video a thumbs down please attach your overhead approach video here, or to my channel for comparison purposes?
Clutch, this video screams intelligence, so I'll say thanks for sharing this with myself and the other 62,800+ viewers who've enjoyed it. Peace.
boy am i jealous, im flying a 1978 172 hahahaha one day i hope to have my own one of those. and that wasnt very sloppy at all nice. beautiful sunrise.
Okay... that now makes me even more excite about getting enough cash put together to start working on my Private PL..... looks fun.... thanks for posting
How hard is this baby to land? I currently fly a 2005 C182 G1000 and am considering getting a checkout in a sr22 with full glass. What are your likes and dislikes about this plane?
@182CessnaPvtPilot If its a newer Cirrus with the G1000 the transition should be seamless. An older Cirrus may have the Avidyne glass system which has some differences..but with the Garmin GNS430 it shouldn't take much to learn.
@dyockey How about landing it with sidestick controls, plus I heard that the sidestick is contolled with a spring? Is it hard to land or does it just take some landings to get use to like any other plane. The 182 took me 4 or so landings due to the fact its so nose heavy but once you trim it out its fine.
@182CessnaPvtPilot The side stick comes pretty natural.it has aileron and elevator trim so you hand really doesn't get tired.. On touchdown you just need to mind the wheel fairings so you don't grind them..the plane likes to be landed almost flat, pretty easy to grease it.
You fly that Cirrus pretty good for a military pilot. I'm a retired Navy controller.. I hope your SR-22 isn't turbocharged! I was only thinking about the shock cooling of the engine and turbocharger.
it is XM. the Cirrus has been the #1 single engine seller for the last 5 years! There are over 4500 of them out there now. Cruise speed 180 Kts (216MPH)--plus it has it's own parachute!!!!

beeroosterm 9 months ago
@beeroosterm
ChrizRockster 9 months ago
@ChrizRockster Your reasoning is faulty. There would be no evidence of pilot distraction in the crash of GA aircraft due to a lack of CVR's, so there's no telling. But even a conversation prior to takeoff can prove distracting enough to kill. Witness Delta flight 1411 where the pilots were distracted enough by mere conversation with a stewardess to forget to set flaps/slats properly. Could music ringing in your ears cause a similar loss of concentration? Absolutely. Save it for your car.
beeroosterm 9 months ago
@beeroosterm
ChrizRockster 9 months ago
@ChrizRockster I'm wondering why the concept should even be considered, especially by the stolid bureaucracy in the FAA. Anything that takes away from the task at hand should be specifically proscribed, and I think this is one of those things. Asking pilots the the question of the equivalent of whether they can chew bubblegum and fly will be met with derision and puffing out of chests. "Of course we can!" Well, yes - until something goes wrong...
beeroosterm 9 months ago
@ChrizRockster And I do not see how having a Jepp chart on your iPad or moving map on your GPS is a problem (unless they're too small to be practical). And if you cannot interpret your marvelous glass panel, I strongly suggest you read the damned manual and practice using it until you become comfortable with it, unless of course you're too busy playing air guitar during approach.
beeroosterm 9 months ago
@beeroosterm
ChrizRockster 9 months ago
@beeroosterm Actually, Ive met airline pilots that listen to Shortwave radio while in the cruise. and some of them talk to amateur radio operators while in the cruise.
srita764 2 months ago
@srita764 I don't care. The pilot's fucking job is to fly the plane, and distractions are dangerous, especially in commercial flying. You want to listen to the radio? Do it in your goddamned car.

Awesome Video! Isn't Vo (maneuvering speed) for that plane set at 133knots? The 60 degree turn at 180knots is sweet but doesn't the POH forbid it?
gardmike1 9 months ago
@gardmike1 Nope. The SR22 can handle it.

Nicely done! I've done one only once a few years ago. Out at Cable Airport, CCB, we avoid straight in approaches. My instructor wanted to get us down in a hurry one night to avoid some incoming weather, and took the opportunity to show me how it's done. (I think he had to pee too, jk)

be careful shock cooling the engine.!! its gonna hurt the airplane in the long run..
chocolatecgrl 11 months ago
@chocolatecgrl You can't shock cool an engine unless you are coming from the high teens. What he did will not shock cool the engine, not even close.
Transam941 9 months ago
@Transam941
Trans, thats not necessarily true. You can shock cool an engine at low altitudes as well. Hence why you always do engine warming during PFL's. This is to keep the engine warm and to stop shock cooling.

Probably annoying to enjoy the song like that, but better than nothing I guess
LTF85199 11 months ago

Insanity714 1 year ago
what radio music system are you using?
BrandonWDWCP 1 year ago
2 g turn, so you mean a 60 degree bank coordinated turn? that should give you 2g's every time. wouldnt recommend low hour pilots to do that, over banking could be really bad at low altitudes for less experienced pilots.

Question for you, what are you using for your video and audio recording?

@eclipse245 Clutch likely has XMradio. Works really slick in the Cirrus. Any transmission, including a quick mike key instantly cuts off the tunes.

How hard is this baby to land? I currently fly a 2005 C182 G1000 and am considering getting a checkout in a sr22 with full glass. What are your likes and dislikes about this plane?
182CessnaPvtPilot 1 year ago
@182CessnaPvtPilot If its a newer Cirrus with the G1000 the transition should be seamless. An older Cirrus may have the Avidyne glass system which has some differences..but with the Garmin GNS430 it shouldn't take much to learn.
dyockey 1 year ago
@dyockey How about landing it with sidestick controls, plus I heard that the sidestick is contolled with a spring? Is it hard to land or does it just take some landings to get use to like any other plane. The 182 took me 4 or so landings due to the fact its so nose heavy but once you trim it out its fine.
182CessnaPvtPilot 1 year ago
@182CessnaPvtPilot The side stick comes pretty natural.it has aileron and elevator trim so you hand really doesn't get tired.. On touchdown you just need to mind the wheel fairings so you don't grind them..the plane likes to be landed almost flat, pretty easy to grease it.
dyockey 1 year ago
I'm not a professional but that doesn't look sloppy to me. It was a very nice landing. Your plane rocks.
Very nice video.

You fly that Cirrus pretty good for a military pilot. I'm a retired Navy controller.. I hope your SR-22 isn't turbocharged! I was only thinking about the shock cooling of the engine and turbocharger.
