A portrait from those legendary times... Together witch Chuck and the others... At least they're alive today... wished Chuck were, too... Rock In Peace bro...
@devilstrings Richard Christy was basically bald, even when he had his ponytail braid thing. And Chuck's voice wasnt as coarse when Richard was in the band.
@devilstrings NO, This is Reinert.Christy played on the last Death-record. Reinert played the drums on Human, where this number is from.Christy did NOT play in Death at the time of this song,Christy helped Chuck on the last album, which came out to earn some money to surgery of his tumor. And for the dedicated Death-fans! Cause he had more or less stopped Death & started Control Denied. R.I.P Chuck..
Thanks for posting this. I what think Sean and Paul offered at this time also pushed Chuck to come out with something more technical and unique each album that separated Death from the rest of extreme music as time went on for them.
Sean was one of the best- awesome tour this was, that snare became a prototype for my sound some years ago when I played... gotta love those piccolo free floaters- they rock
for those comparing ans saying wich one is better (hoglan / reinert ) i must say that I disagree, they're both great and extremelly technical, but in VERY different stiles... I think both fixes perfect in the other bands that they've been through... anyway, death always had the best drummers, kudos for Christy too!!!
As for me being busy attacking people, you're doing the same to me aren't you? At first I was simply correcting a false statement. I didn't expect it to turn into this.

Now now guys, both jazz and metal are both kickass, and have their own seperate challenges. I will however say that jazz requires more schooling and harmonic knowledge. Metal is generally technically more demanding though.
The jazz-based drummers are the ones that are best in metal, when the dude said he's too good for metal he was wrong, he's too good for shitty all-blasting-no-talent-just-speed type of metal. Not to mention fucking deathcore "BREE BREE" 10 bpm breakdown crap...
eurologic. Sean started playing piano when he was 7, and drums when he was 10. Van Halen/Rush/Iron Maiden/Led Zeppelin were his influences, and what he learnt on. Not jazz. He was never "schooled in jazz"
First you say he was "schooled in jazz" now you say he just has "influences" Schooled in, and influenced by, are totally different. You were wrong my friend, not me.
It was New World School of the Arts. And I never said he didn't learn ANY Jazz. I said he was not SCHOOLED in Jazz, as eurologic thought. Musical theory goes much deeper than just Jazz. Jazz is not the pinnacle of all music as some people tend to think.
Ok that's fair enough. Although I would argued that he was schooled- to a limited extent- in jazz when he attended that school.
Try not putting words into people's mouths, I have never said anything of the kind. I enjoy listening to jazz but I listen to many other genres equally.
I wasn't putting words into your mouth, as the last part of my comment was not directed at you. It was directed at the guys on the previous page of comments. I never said YOU think Jazz is the pinnacle of music. Just read their comments. "The jazz-based drummers are the ones that are best in metal" Thats bullshit. I have nothing against jazz, but patience, practice, and experience make a good drummer, not just learning Jazz
There is some truth to that statement though. Playing jazz requires a more subtle technique in your hands, mostly because of all the ghost notes and fast ride action. Learning to play like that can greatly enhance your playing in other styles as well. Same thing for latin & funk.
Learning to play grooves typical for other styles of music than the one you're mainly pursuing opens a lot of doors. Fresh ideas.
Holy hell! This video makes you realise just how much of the details of his drumming were lost due to the crappy snare sound on the Human album... Nice upload!
What else can one say? My favorite death metal drummer. And the scary part? His work with Gordian Knot is EVEN BETTER! I suppose one can say that both the death metal/jazz drumming of Human is different to the full on jazz fusion of Gordian Knot. But for pure genius, one only needs to listen to the seamless brilliance of the first few minutes of Code/AntiCode from Gordian Knot. Just beautiful drumwork.
For my money, there is no one as multi-faceted in the drumming department than Reinert.
Top class song, top class drumming, top class song, RIP 13.12.2001. Thanks for this post, "we all can live a little more" with Chuck through youtube, I would say...
