  • How do you open the Sega CD?

  • @mistertitanic You have to press the reset button.

  • The noise tells me that the drive is attempting to play the cd. It could be as simple as the top magnetic cross bar that holds down, and spins along with the CD is stuck, and cannot rotate. Also, the rubber layer on the drive itself maybe worn away.. At any rate, I suspect that you've not got much of a problem to worry about.

  • whats up with youtube just yelling COMMENT PENDING APPROVAL!! oh well im gona try this one more time try cleaning the expansion port on the sega genesis that connects the cd to the genesis

  • Pluse push the lazer to middle of cd to reset

  • My older bro had one an I just fix it, open it up turn it on push close-butten an then unplug by hand/ little screw-driver turn gear til cd plate is tight to back/ all the way into hold plate,, then plug back in,, the bigist thing is that people push cd back in by hand & an that overextends the gears,,

  • Have jou cleant the lens with a dry kutip ?

  • man, bummer. i hate it when i get stuff im excited to play and then find out its broken or doesnt work. i hate it even more when i cant fix it, lol.

  • any news on your sega cd? my own does the same, endless red blinking, but sometimes it rejects the disc by itself and both green/red lights blinks...

sometimes i can make it read music discs, when it WANTS to read them works fine, it doesn't give any error, it doesn't skip any track... so this makes me suppose it's not the lens, i should replace capacitors and see what happens.

  • cotton bud i ment to say

  • some times dirt get on the lens and a cd cleaner does not work as the dirt goes hard so take it apart and use a cotton bad to clean the lens as that what happend to my one

  • i dont know if its work a mega cd on a sega genesis or a sega mega drive on a sega cd if yes tell me if not well tell me

  • put this game in the pc and make a copy

  • Well, I can see the problem here is that you have a sega cd!

  • Two possibilities on how to repair this issue:

1- Electrolytic capacitors are bad and not filtering power properly on the CD DRIVE, causing it to not work properly. Solution: Replace all the large electrolytic capacitors on the CD drive and power board the replace all SMD electrolytic capacitors on the digital (CPU) board.

2- The SONY optical pickup(KSS-240) is bad. Replace it. It's a standard audio CD-Player pickup used on high-end CD-Player machines. Shouldn't be too hard to buy a spare.

  • one year ago!

  • @ArwingFighter

Yup I've had it for a year now and still haven't had the time to do anything with it yet lol. Keep the ideas coming!

  • I had two of those Sega CD models, and they were garbage. Whatever you do, don't turn them upside down. My issues were electro-mechanical, and I could never get the tray switches operating in the right order. Also, the CD lense drops a little so the tray can clear it, and it does so by using a slotted plastic spindle with some white grease. Getting the tray/cd ready timing events back to normal is unreal. They were too fragile and underdeveloped, unlike the revised model.

  • Thanks for the ideas so far everyone! Sadly this system has been shelved for the time being. Hopefully I'll get to it one of these days. Until then I still welcome your comments and suggestions.

  • Have you managed to fix your SEGA CD yet?

  • @Riddler95

Nah, just haven't had the time. One of these days I'll get to it.

  • @SiLeNtShAdOw7777

    I have experience repairing these.

Your problem is most likely severed conductors on the ribbon connecting the pickup to the drive electronics.

The breaks will be on the pickup side of the ribbon and will be on a bend at the plastic shim of the terminated end of the ribbon.

What may need to be done is to cut off the bad end of the ribbon, scrape off enough of the insulation to expose conductors and then shim the end using cellophane tape to allow flex.

  • @Watcher3223

    Thanks for the tip!

  • @SiLeNtShAdOw7777

    I just hope it helps.

Or, if you'd like, I can try to fix it for you. I was thinking of making a YouTube video of something like this.

  • @Watcher3223

Thanks for the offer. At this time it's a project currently on the back burner for me though. I'll get to it one of these days. Again, thanks for the tip as it gives me an idea of what to look for.

If you do ever get around to making a video that would be great as I am sure there are others who would benefit from it as well.

  • MN12BIRD has a couple videos about fixing his Sega CD, and had a similar problem where his CD tray opened and closed, and he fixed it. Something to do with the timing between the laser assembly raising up to spin the disc, and the door closing. Mine did the same thing as his when I first got it, but my Sega CD somehow corrected itself.

What your problem sounds like to me is the laser assembly isn't raising at all, and it spins with no disc on it. Open it up and take a look. Good Luck

  • Did you try cleaning the Laser on the SEGA CD?

  • I am currently having the same problem.

I tilted my Sega CD Model One UP 3-5 inches and now it works. ITs seems the CD spindle doesnt catch, but I m still not sure how to fix. I dont want to tilt it forever, Try tilting see if it works

  • Mine was doing the same thing I had to tilt it up about 3-5 inches. I put a book under it and it works everytime. but I dont want to do this I want it to work

  • It sounds like the cd motor is burnt out or not getting enough power

  • What kind of AC Adapter does SEGA CD Model 1 use?

  • @Riddler95

It uses the Model 1 Genesis or Model 2 Sega CD AC adapter (the one with the black tip). Remember to ONLY use OFFICIAL Sega AC adapters as 3rd party ones can blow the internal fuse.

  • I hear the problem at 1:26. The CD is not being held down properly. The spindle just spins without really moving the disc.

  • That's a good thought thanks!

  • I BUY A SEGA GENESIS 3 CORE SYSTEM.....

THE SEGA CD WORKING IN THIS MODEL?

I am of Argentine I use a translator regards and graces(thanks) gracias compadre

  • No, not with the Genesis 3. It does not have the needed expansion port. Sega CD only works with Genesis 1 and 2.

  • nop, no funciona.. yo tmb me lo habia comprado.. no tienee el cosito para conectar la sega cd, por suerte consegui una genesis II :A

  • mine turns on for 1 sec then just turns off. i opend the fucking thing and nothing seems wrong but the light only turns on for 1 sec and nothing appears on the tv but the sega works fine with TERMINATOR 2 can some one please help me

  • Try cleaning the connector and contacts on the Genesis. You also might be having a problem with the internal fuse. Seems to be a common problem with Sega CD systems especially when they're used with the wrong power adapter.

  • I think I read somewhere that the Sega CD Model 1 was notorious for its hardware failure rate, which I think is the main reason why Sega came out with the Model 2 version. Maybe you could try taking it somewhere that specialises in optical disk drive repair and such.

  • I do intend to take it to someone if I can't fix it myself. Sadly, I still haven't had much time to tear into it due to other obligations. I did recently win another model 1 off ebay with the original box and some of the inserts and pack-ins. So the one in this video may end up as a future spare parts donor. I hope I can get it working though so it doesn't have to end up that way.

  • Mine had a problem similar to that. It might sound stupid and I don't know why it worked, but when I held the system at a 45 degree angle it worked. I lifted the left side of the system up to make the 45 degree angle and it would read the disc and then I could set it back down. It's worth a shot for yours.

  • Interesting idea. Anything's worth a try. Thanks

  • I've never taken a good look at a Sega CD's guts myself, but some friends of mine have. Your problem is most likely the belt being too worn out to spin the disc properly - it probably needs to be replaced. There are some materials you can find at hardware stores that make excellent belts for Famicom Disk Systems, and something similar may work for your Sega CD. You need something sturdy, but flexible.

That's my best guess with the given information. Best of luck, and tell me how it works out.

  • Thank you for the idea. The belt certainly seems like a possibility. Sadly I still haven't had the time to open it up yet.

  • It seems that disk is blocked inside

  • try cleaning the contact points on both the cartridge and system with 70% alchole on Q-tips

  • my model 2 is fucked up. the controller port doesnt work

  • Yah I have a model 2 and Im going to buy a sega cd and a 32x( because of the AVGN)

  • That's too bad, I think you should open it, and try to see what's the problem, treat it with love, not like i would do, lol

  • lol I will. I just haven't had the time to get around to it yet.
