His book Drum Wisdom is very revealing. I really think it is very good at helping the player understand what his role is in much improvised music. Many questions I have had for years were answered. Check it out
I've had a chance to hang a little bit with Bob. Nice guy. He didn't have to spend his break out on the street talking drums and music to a total stranger but he did. Chances are he has more to offer than those who would tear him down. I don't see the point in talking shit about people who made a contribution.
I had the great pleasure of having Bob play on my 1st CD in 98 and the man was the essence of magnanimity and kindness. I believe his spiritual journey to be sincere. He is one of the few true originals . Plus he sure didn't make much so he worked for the shear love of music.
He's not a phony drum master, loveisthelaw. He can most certainly play the drums. But like certain other musicians (Getz and Bing Crosby come to mind) He's a phony HUMAN BEING. Don't believe all the "peace and love" hippie bullshit he spouts. Inside, he's a conniving, insincere, lying, cheating hypocrite.
Don't confuse being a great musician with being a great person. They are not always the same thing.
@cutiebrutus I'm really sorry you have had some bad experience that gave you a bad impression of Moses. I have no idea what your personal experience was, and I know that "back in the day" Moses did play a lot with some great musicians who were mixed up, to say the least. That being said, I've spent a good bit of time with Moses in the past couple of years and can honestly say that as he stands now, he is without a doubt one of the most honest, open, caring human beings I've ever met.
In his heyday, Bob was lean, prolific, and innovative - just like Brando. In his later years, Bob has become reclusive and impenetrable - just like Brando.
Man, when you live in this musical space you have to be a recluse...it's the only way to remain sane and free from the mean spirited public and musical know it alls!!!
Moses seems to me to be one of the most brilliant drummers....alive and subtle, that ever was. How did he not become as known to the jazz public as he deserves to be? Oh well, most of my favorite players arent very famous either....just great. I can hear Moses speaking.
mean smooth double stroke rolls. Beautiful sound, complex polyrythms, its really good. I don't think it flows very well from concept to concept however.
Bob Moses is a master of flow and subtlety...really a spiritual phenomonen in the leagues of jazz drum set players. I could listen to him just play like this for hours every day....his inner speech is beautiful.
Thanks so much for this video...Moses is such an underated icon...amazing concept and technique...do you happen to know what kind of cymbal he is using to ride with?...its beautiful
mind blowing

A true original....who doesn't sound like everyone else. Too many achieve fame before they find their own voice.

Drummers such as Bob Mosses, Milford Graves, Hamid Drake are true masters. They just aren't reconized by the mainstream masses.

@cutiebrutus
Moses has been every form of cool there is when it comes to the drums
He's playing music here, something very few drummers can do and then even fewer still can do it this well
This a song from his soul, not just a bunch of licks he's practiced
generatrix999 1 year ago 2
@cutiebrutus you think Moses is a arrogant phony? haHa!! He might be arrogant but he is no phony! This dude is a heavy drummer! You dont know shit!

For me, as a bass player, this is like blissfully listening to a gentle morning rain.

there's 'the edge' there's 'out there' and then there's the place where cats like moses are
mortals like us we can only try to dig this stuff
and yeah there is a certain brando/kurtz/heart of darkness look the man has/projects ...kinda spooky

Rakalam means the inaudible sound of the invisible sun. According to Moses himself.

What is he using as a stick around 3:30 ??

Bob carves his own sticks. They do not match; he made a left and a right.

Beautiful stream of conciousness playing!!! So many young players and arrogant jazzheads just don't get this! Very sad indeed!!!
If you dig this, check out Han Bennink, Fritz Hauser and Pierre Fauvre.

Bob Moses is the Marlon Brando of drums.
In his heyday, Bob was lean, prolific, and innovative - just like Brando. In his later years, Bob has become reclusive and impenetrable - just like Brando.
Is it not ironic that he now LOOKS LIKE Brando!?!
