I've only come across this guy in recent months but I like him a lot. Lovely playing style and a great interpreter of Schubert. I think he will have a great career.
His recording of the Moments Musicaux and Impromptus is, besides his touching interpretation which to me is so much Schubert as possible, a perfect recording technically, velvet quality of tone, EMI's engineers have done a great job here.
He can play schubert. And i agree with him, that despite the several masses and sacred works composed by schubert, deep down inside he was not truly a believer. he felt a strong, at times painful sense of isolation
"He gave a whole new meaning to the name & to the music...he gave a whole new meaning to my life...if that is not enough then what is? ...If only just the fact that he IS makes me feel so high!"
(Inspired by David Fray, 22.01.2010, Elena Fomina)
Ha, now they can quit calling Fray 'the French Gould' Gould wouldn't play Schubert.. I really love this Schubert music, Fray has an excellent grasp of Schubbie :) Wonderful!! Me want, me buy
Lovely tone, and sensitivity to the length the tone should ring before playing the next. Also wonderful layering. WIshed for more playfullness in 5:00. Very beautifully produced video.
He played in New York this week with the NY Philharmonic (Ravel Concerto in G). Phenomenal. Lang Lang, beware. You have a serious international rival.
Heard the recital to which you refer,I was greatly impressed by his innate sensitivity and intellectual grasp of Schubert. Would love hear him in the sonatas.
David Frays comment about the meaning of Moments, and how it relates to Schubert composition is reminiscent of a similar assertion made by his music man Daniel Barenboim. In his last book entitled Music Quickens Time, Daniel Barenboim acutely mentions that The Music does not begin with the move from the initial note to the second, but from the silence to the first note. Also, the last sound is not the end of the music.there is one last moment of expressivity.
To that respect, this short motion picture is admirable, particularly as its end, allowing this continuity between the last keystroke and the silence that follows it. It does create this unique state of peace argued by Barenboim as well as the infinite perception of Schuberts Moments Musicaux. Very well design and creative film, brings Schubert into our daily life and displays David Frays startling talent. We shall think Virgin to promote music in such innovative ways. Bravissimo!
For Bach or Beethoven he is not german and lutheran enough. Too frisky. His Schubert is by far better than his Bach. Schubert accommodates his french tone of voice with lyricism.

Nothing impressive, very banal, a lot of gaps between the 2 hands, quite bad taste, very heavy in the 4th Moment Musical, so many grimaces, and what the guy says is so banal, so flat...

That's ALWAYS the pathetic answer of these who have no argument, follow the fashion and the business on young instrumentalists who are not YET interpreters. BUT Fray has a lovely face, an helpful father-in-law (Muti), the right networks pushing hardly behind him. He is talented, but full of lacks, tricks, weaknesses. This Schubert CD is done much to early, Fray does'nt deserve all of this medianoise.
Let's talk of Jonathan Biss, Simon Trpcesky, B. Chamayou, S. van Eckerstein, M. Helmchen !
this is a psychological term to describe the fusion between two senses, in this case: musical sounds and taste.
The player's taste is activated by the different sounds, which improves memory and musical ability.
It's very rare. the mouvements that he makes with his mouth suggest such an ability. Which can explain why he has a wonderful style at such a young age.
That is an option, but it looks to me that he's also mutely singing the melody line to help its fluency and legato. I notice that his mandible often shapes as round as a singer's one would. This two options can of course co-exist.
Le disque de David Fray parait le 21 septembre en France. Il sera en concert avec le programme de son disque le 23 sept. au Piano aux Jacobins à Toulouse, le 16 oct. au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
Why is he sitting on a normsl chair isnt that harder?

How can you explain Schubert's Ave Maria if you say that he did not believe in God? And how could he create this beauty without believing??

Again there is simply no direction in his playing. It's stalling, it's stuck. Pretty weak esp. coming from EMI which has Anderszewski and Andsnes.
