Prince Charming is anything BUT Charming! He is perhaps more like Prince Arrogant. Him, compared with the New Yawker rapunzel made this one of the funniest sketches imaginable.
my now 67 year old dad used to watch SS with my brother and me. He now watches it with my 18month old niece and we still crack up at this skit!!! MY WHAT??? LMAO!
Check out the context of the prince's look between 2:02 and 2:10. "Frog...I spoke to you already...twice...you're not listening to my royal voice...I'm going to have to beat your ass down"...hilarious...
Someone knows who has videos from the first season of this series which saw where we now have 33 years or more.
Remember the evil chapter of the prime minister calling for what could replace the throne residents should bring anything that the prime minister does not have
Could someone please tell me what this RUDE prince is barking at Kermit around 1:40?? LOL, I couldn't figure it out as a kid, and I still have no idea!! It sounds like "warge!"
This was, without a doubt, one of the funniest things I've ever seen on Sesame Street! I especially crack up when her hair falls down and you hear that musical sting! LMAO!
I'd kind of like to see how this would turn out if performed by Jeff Bridges and Shelley Duvall, who starred in the Faerie Tale Theatre version of Rapunzel. Anyone know of that show?
When I saw this last month I remembered Shelley Duvall and Jeff Bridges version on Faerie Tale Theatre. I can't remember any of the other skits but I remember that Rapunzel one. It was very good if my memory serves me well.
This was always my favorite News Flash. Flawless comedy from beginning to end. I especially love at the end when the princess is carrying on about her hair, and the prince turns to her and says, "Oh shut up!". Classic! God, I miss Jim.
Thank you for this post. I always loved this, the arrogance of the prince, Kermit butting in , how the prince would stare at Kermit sarcastically, his preoccupation with his horse in the end. The sketch is so dry and witty. One of the best. Classic Sesame Street never underestimated children's ability to understand and appreciate good satire. I am thankful for this people spoon feed kids these days too much and underestimate their ability to think.
I've have never seen this "News Flash" skit before. I loved how the prince got madder and madder said "you get your hair down here, now!" and then she does with unexpected results. LOL! That was so funny when the prince says "Oh shut up I lost my horsie you lost your hair!" I could see why they edited the "shut up" part for little kids since it is not a very polite word but I have to admit it the ways he says it cracks me up lol!
There is also a bit more to this skit on the Old School: Volume 1 DVD set. When the News Flash logo fades up, we hear this rattling sound before the music kicks in, and then at the end after Kermit's line about "everything going to pieces," he asks if they are off the air. Then it fades to black.
On later reruns of this skit (probably post-1986 airings), I know how they edited it. They replaced the original News Flash logo and announcer with the 80s version, and they cut Prince Charming's "Oh, shut up!" so it wouldn't be a bad influence to kids.
Man, this one used to really stress me out as a child. Not sure why...maybe because everyone is stressed out themselves?...plus her hair falling off entirely was somehow horrifying...maybe because that meant she was trapped in that tower forever? I dunno.
This is one of my co-worker and my favorites. We watch it so often, and we laugh at how arrogant and obnoxious the Prince is...and the Princess' accent...we can't get enough! Thanks so much for posting!
A lot like Shrek and other fairy tales where modern elements are inserted into a medieval or ancient story. Like Princess Fiona has a Justin Timberlake kind of poster. Rapunzel from medieval Europe talkes with a Fran Drescher kind of Brooklynese!
This wasn't a "News Flash" sketch that I was fond of as a kid. Not only was the Prince rude and arrogant, but when he was trying to tell Rapunzel to let down her hair, Kermit kept interrupting him. Rapunzel was much nicer than either of them!
I actually think Prince Charming was rude to Kermit. He could of at lease said "You'll find out soon enough," and I didn't think he had to yell at him. I think he kind of looks like Guy Smiley when he did "Beat The Time" with Cookie Monster and Grover.
This was a great one. I liked it at the end when they started playing that Sesame Street News music. Why is it in some skits at the end they played that into music, and in others they didn't? I still think Prince Charming was rude to Kermit at the beginning.
I think that's because this was one of the first News Flash segments to be made. They probably only had the Sesame Street News theme at the end of the earliest News Flashes.
I know it's just a puppet skit, but about that prince (who's about as charming as flesh-eating bacteria) -- can all you boys and girls out there in TV land say ABUSIVE PARTNER? (saying "shut up" to a woman, for crying in Manhattan)
Adorable memory flash -- love the Prince's upper-crusty preppy Say-Biff-Yes-Tad voice versus Rapunzel's Brooklyn accent, and it's interesting that the prince turned out to be not a nice guy -- voice of Louis Winthorpe III and the shallowness of Hal
I think this is supposed to be one of the very first News Flash segments, from 1971. The DVD set labels it as from Season 4, but it looks older than that (after all, the Count's Song from 1974 was accidentally labeled as 1972 on the DVD set, also). I can tell it's one of the first ones since the News Flash announcer sounds different and there's more underscore music to this skit, too.
Jim Henson and Frank Oz... the John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the muppet world. Or is that Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel? Or maybe Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel? Or.... Anyway, pure genius! They don't make 'em like that anymore.
I'm the mom of the kids who watched this stuff. This is too funny for words! The corny music is a riot, the NY-accent is a riot, "I can't heewah" is a riot! Yes, the prince looks like Guy Smiley(Jim Henson), but the voice belongs to Frank Oz. And the princess's hilarious voice is the same one that does "Little Miss Muffet"--also hilarious ("Is that spider going to show up here again? What a drag!")
To this day, after seeing all the other SS News Flashes, I *still* think this one is the best.
I have this on VHS and every time my sis and I had a bad day, we'd watch this and just laugh our asses off. Teh prince getting all pissy and whiney is comedy gold. GOLD, I tell ya!
"I'LL LEAVE IT with the frog!" *walks away, comes back* "He's RIGHT THERE!"
"I've lost my horsey! I'VE LOST MY HORSEY!" *turns to Rapunzel* "Oh, SHUT UP!"
from 1:41-1:47, did The Prince tell Kermit to hush? This is my all time favorite episode. Funny, but I agree with some of the comments. Back then sesme street got away with alot of shit. But I was too young to understand it at the time.
Isn't there another Rapunzel where she lets down a chair and bear on the poor Prince? When she finally does let down her hair, it hurts when the Prince tries to climb it. The squire then tells her to go down the stairs, and they go together leaving the Prince behind.
After all these years, this still has me crackin' up!! LMAO! Its funny how in all the fairy tale type news flashes that the prince is Guy Smiley! lol This is classic Sesame Street at its best!
I love the princes sean connery accent, and the fact that she sounds like the daughter of a bronx construction worker! lol. The music and sound effects are great too! LMAO
Kermit is a muppet and he's in Sesame Street. Jim Henson created both shows. Frank Oz (the voice of Bert, Grover and Cookie Monster) also does the Muppet Show, giving voices to Fozzie and Animal and Miss Piggy.
These News Flashes always give a twist to the classic story, but in this case, I feel bad for everyone. Poor Rapunzel will be trapped in the tower forever, the poor prince doesn't get the girl, and he loses his horse on top of that, and Kermit is all dumbfounded because it didn't go the way it was supposed to. Actually, it's not clear whether Rapunzel meant to let down ALL of her hair, or if she did it by accident. In any case, it's wonderful to see this after 25 years!
This one was the absolute favorite of my brother and me. We used to act out the skit all the time....and we still do although we're both over 40 now. LOL!!
OMG Hysterical!!! I never realized that Rapunzel's voice was done by Kevin Clash, he of Elmo fame. He must have been on the show for years... I remember this when I was a kid!
I love the sound effect when Repunzel's hair falls off. Boiiiiiiiiiing! Her Brooklyn sounding accent is somewhat annoying. The Prince has quite an attitude though. He tells Repunzel to shut up which shows that this skit is vintage alright. He looks like Guy Smiley's long lost twin brother. LOL. Anyways this skit is hilarious.
Why does the guy saying "And now we take you o Kermit the Frog..." sound kinda like he has a pissy attitude/wants to beat the crap out of somebody?
I miss these SS News Flash sketches and am happy to see them again, though I really didn't know that there were many variants of the "NEWS FLASH" logo.
What bothered me as a kid was not seeing Rapunzel bald. It was the fact that she was still trapped in the tower with no way for the prince to save her. I was upset about her being left behind and not rescued. Of course, I did not get the humor back then and was taking it way too seriously.
Jim Henson was a genius! No matter how old you get, this stuff remains entertaining. The Prince is such a prima-dona. Favorite line: "I lost my horse. Oh shut up!" Hilarious! :)
This has to be THE most classic of all the News Flash skits. I've always loved it as my favourite, and to watch the Prince break down throught the full range of emotion, beginning with his swanning self importance, to love, to bemusement, to frustration then anger boiling over, then to anxiety followed by matchless grief when he loses his horsie 'Big Fellow' - all the while being assaulted by the screeching Brooklyn-ish accent of the less than desireable Rapunzel. Huge thanks to the poster!
Prince Charming is anything BUT Charming! He is perhaps more like Prince Arrogant. Him, compared with the New Yawker rapunzel made this one of the funniest sketches imaginable.
LOL!

i thought kermit is in the muppets?
punkbird01 5 years ago
Kermit is a muppet and he's in Sesame Street. Jim Henson created both shows. Frank Oz (the voice of Bert, Grover and Cookie Monster) also does the Muppet Show, giving voices to Fozzie and Animal and Miss Piggy.

Ha! Prince Charming...such a narcissist.

I remember this when I was a kid!
rcktmanil 5 years ago
That's Jerry Nelson, not Kevin Clash. Kevin didn't join until 1980.

It's actually Jerry Nelson.

I miss these SS News Flash sketches and am happy to see them again, though I really didn't know that there were many variants of the "NEWS FLASH" logo.
travelsonic 5 years ago
The reason why the announcer sounds a bit different is because this was probably the first regular Sesame Street News Flash segment.

this was soo funny ! i liked the bald princess & when the prince said - I don't know !
annken102 5 years ago
What bothered me as a kid was not seeing Rapunzel bald. It was the fact that she was still trapped in the tower with no way for the prince to save her. I was upset about her being left behind and not rescued. Of course, I did not get the humor back then and was taking it way too seriously.

Jim Henson was a genius! No matter how old you get, this stuff remains entertaining. The Prince is such a prima-dona. Favorite line: "I lost my horse. Oh shut up!" Hilarious! :)

These News Flashes are STILL hilarious! What a sense of humour Jim Henson had!!
