And you could change sails without removing the roller furler and pipe using method below. I don't know yet how many shaped reinforcers would have to be spaced/installed in the pipe to make it withstand a big sail, but will find out. Would be great to be able to change sails on a furler without having lufe tape system installed, sail cut 3 different ways, etc. etc.
If you move your furling line to the deck top it will be easier to reel in perhaps. Also, for a roller furler that you can reef. Cut out some 1/4" or more sheet pvc shapes that fit into your pvc pipe. The shape you cut out would include a hole for the head stay wire, and maybe another one for a dedicated halyard. Glue them to the inside of the pipe through a slit in the full length of the pipe that is big enough to get your jib hanks through,, 1&1/16 " maybe? cut shapes should grab slit.
Just a question. What keeps the whole assembly from sliding up the forstay when sailing? Is that a concern? I'm planning on making one of these.. I see the sail attaches to the spool, But it looks like the spool just rides against a bearing.
@SuperTechnicalman mine just does not slide up the stay , the sheet lines on a sail are normally angled downward, so that's probably one reason it doesn't slide up the stay, the other reason being that the pvc pipe goes all the way up the stay with a pipe cap on top, so the cap bumps against the point where the top of the forestay meets the mast. No way for it to ride up.
@jijoclalet01 i copied off of cookinwithgas, and modified it so I can reef the sail, and also so I can change sails without disconnecting the forestay and removing the pvc pipe from the forestay. To change sail on mine,i just unfurl the sail, untie 7 easy knots on the loops that pass through the sail grommets and go around the pipe. i use a separate halyard that ties off on the spool of the pvc furler. Thanks to cookinwith gas, and my friend Gabe for making my version happen.
Damn..I thought I had an original idea here...apparently not. Glad to see it actually works though.

Your Amsteel rope idea instead of hanks ,, that would let you reef the sail as well as furl,, right?
