My knowledge of American model railways and the companies that make them is very limited. By British standards though the central power rail seems to be limited to the vintage electric tracks from the early days of Hornby. I think as soon as the technology to the use the actual rails to carry the power came along people weren't willing to put up with the sight of 3 rail track.
