I use a neti pot and find it quite effective. HOWEVER! YOU DO NOT USE TAP WATER! Tap water can contain amoeba that can cause harm if passed through the nostrils (especially in the southwest). Although this is quite uncommon, it still is a possibility. YOU SHOULD ONLY USE DISTILLED OR BOILED WATER WHEN USING A NETI POT.

TAP WATER! Are you crazy!?!? NEVER NEVER NEVER USE TAP WATER! I've been using an electric nasal hydrator (to not advertise the brand) for well over a year. Same exact concept, less all the rigors of tilting your head. If you absolutely want a sinus infection use tap water. If you are trying to avoid sinus infections use reverse osmois filtered water. Same stuff that comes in the 5 gallon water cooler bottles. You shouldn't even drink tap water, chlorine is poison period. Tap water will kill you.

@StarWoman87 You threw up? That's not a normal reaction to using a neti pot. I just use one, so I'm not expert, but it sounds like maybe you got some water down your throat and had some type of gag reaction? Other than that, I can't think of why that would happen. Do you have a strong gag reflex? Next time you see your doctor, perhaps you should mention it, just to see if they have any reasons.

Probably. I gagged, eyes streaming tears, stinging like crazy when I first started using one, not to mention the disgusting blood clots that is washed out of my sinuses (might as well be disgustingly honest). Now that I've got the technique down pat and I'm used to it and the infection has cleared up it doesn't bother me at all. It becomes as routine as brushing your teeth.

You should only use distilled water or boiled water that has been cooled. Water from the tap may contain things that you don't want added to your nose.

You can briefly stop the flow to pause and catch your breath, then you resume. The pause only takes roughly a second once you get practice.

You can also breathe through your mouth, amazingly enough. I was stunned. It's actually very cool. However, I use filtered water and sea salt.

You keep your mouth open, and calmly breathe through your mouth as the saline water flows through your nostrils. Just be sure to bend wayy frontward, relax your head into the sink, and you'll enjoy the nice warm nasal rinse experience. When the last water flows out the neti, maintained your head in the sink tilted for 15 seconds, close off the upper nostril and blow the snot into the sink. Repeat the process for the other nostril. Wipe nose with tissue. Most people don't bend forward enuf.

Actually, using the neti pot feels great! When you are in a pool, the water is cool, filled with chlorine, and you are not expecting it to go in your nose. Using a neti pot with warm salty water is rather soothing! Stop by the netiworld store and check one out. They make awesome holiday gifts.

@easyseasons - Yes it will feel like that if you don't use the proper water. I didn't watch this whole video, but I skimmed through and noticed that she got her water from the tap. If your local water has even a low amount of chlorine, it'll burn. Boil some water and let it cool to room temp. I keep a pitcher of previously boiled water in the fridge. If you want, you can use distilled bottled water, but boiling is free and it doesn't create the waste of the plastic bottle.
