  • Neat contest

  • nice.

  • Someone post the time of the beginning of each story please

  • @SuperChocolatePain

    The two Beautiful Women 4:15

"What happens when you really listen" 17:00

  • Hey do you have skype? I want to practice my story telling with someone that i dont know, so they could honestly tell me if im good at it or not

  • I really liked the story about how people dont like the naked truth, that's really quite true

  • weak voice, hands do no illustrate the mental image

  • Interesting lecture. Storytelling is a dramatic recounting of events and ideas designed to engage, motivate and inspire. It's a fine art which truly connects you to your audience. Kevin Allen @kapitchman

  • Great lecture! Really interesting stuff about storytelling. I loved the models! Thanks!

  • How dry! He should take some drama classes. He makes storytelling boring.

  • You can find the diagrams here ils.unc.edu/courses/2010_fall/inls558_001/ (Storytelling Models)

  • Brilliant information and good presentation..

But also very interesting that the Professor is a poor storyteller.. more like talking to first graders. The reasons for this go beyond the confines of the story and engage the other element of storytelling.. Character and individual character traits.

  • nice try...

  • Where can I get the story listening trance diagram?

  • This was an amazing lecture. Thank you.

  • What a great lecture. Pity the audio was off. The uploader should fix this!

  • we did one of these at school

  • i love the story of Truth and Story and I totally got it :O)

  • Yawn!!!!!

You're as great as my parents were at telling a story. They only needed a one page book.

  • I personally have been talking shite all my life, and that has kept many people enthralled. I will post an instructional video soon.

  • what a fat whiny bitch, I hope her brother/lover beats her

  • My story that I always tell involves close personal experiences like when I take a shit and I think I've finished and then I wipe and feel the smooth glide of a wipe lubricated with a cunning blob of shit still connected with my anus. In despair, I wipe about 30 times, chafing my ass before having to shower. You can never feel clean knowing you've spread shit into your ass hairs. :(

  • @speckyprick RFLMFA0!

  • @speckyprick This is exactly why we use the astonishing bidet here in Europe (well, a good part of it).

It’s so great for avoiding showers in such messy cases.

I wondered how you could ever do without it, now I know, thanks for your story!

  • Maybe he actually knows something about the structure of the story but the way he tells his story is so frickin' boooooring. It's embarassing.

  • richardmfiske.myinlife [dot] com

Break your cigarette smoking habit here :)

  • u suck

  • @theboogeiman713 look, if your just gonna complain do it somewhere else i mean at first i adimt it is kinda boring but like every1 else says the main point is what its about this really isn't him telling a story its him mostly telling wat its about

  • @emilymaiher ok bro your right i was out of line there sorry if i up sat you but i just spit the truth

  • @theboogeiman713 its k sometimes truth is better than a lie

  • @theboogeiman713 and sorry if i sound a little you know preachy and stuff my mom is making me look for some stuff on here for my siblings

  • At first I didn't think this man was very interesting but I really did like his story about truth.

  • I was hoping to find someone who teaches storytelling in an interesting way. I'll keep looking.

  • Loved this!

  • Would have been more powerful if you organized it as a story.

  • Comment removed

  • same could be applied to tv and movie

  • bo nie ma napisów ;P chyba z 4 godziny oglądałem bo nie mogłem wytrzymalbym calego naraz

  • do dupy naprawde

  • do dupy

  • Hahaha it's ironic how he sucks at it himself!

  • i meant to watch this for homework.. seriosuly it hasnt taught me much :L

  • @MrBrtzy SAME!!!! omg weird peter ;)

  • wow... Great Video and great Teaching !

    Good Stuff

  • boring

  • I found it hard to hear even with the volume turned to maximum, and he isn't exactly inspiring, it is hard work to catch the tiniest point and when you have caught it you want to throw it back in the water. I might listen to the rest later.

  • How did you upload this hour long video??

  • One important tool in communication is making information interesting. It is certainly an important part of story telling. Perhaps he could polish this skill.

  • I really enjoyed that; especially the Stone-Cutter story

  • What a dull speaker. This man is the opposite of Robert McKee.

  • excellent work!

  • This can be skipped in favor of Ira Glass "how to tell a story". Ira's is faster to the point. This guy talks about the listener's experience all the way until like 20min.

  • Probably should be retitled to "The listener experience" or something like that, because there's little to no storytelling theory or tips for storytelling practice here. His summary is a simple argument that "data" (apparently of all kinds) should be presented in story form.

  • i love to join story telling contest. i ever joined. and i won. in my country. indonesia. but i told the story with english .

  • @missusoomuch cool story bro

  • those were really cool stories told...I am interested how fan fiction relates to all of this (even though I don't read or write it myself, I think it's very interesting.)

  • Thanks a lot. I am going to High Point, North Carolina for a storytelling competitiion tommorow so this help a LOT! I'll tell you how I do when I come back "fingers crossed"

  • good job

  • gets out of sync around 20 min

  • Great video, but it seems to be unsynced by about 5 seconds.

I kind of takes away from the impact of his stories when you see the wrong expressions, but I think it might just be me.

    Anybody else seeing this?

  • i liked it all but the second story. didnt like that one

  • thank you very much Prof. Sturm for your 45 minute really wonderful presentation,,,

nice storytelling atmosphere and nice lecture...

  • 45 minutes well spent.

I wish the Moonlight Sonata that was played wasn't in MIDI, though, hehe.

  • Genius clip, I am really impressed. I have watched the movie "The man from the earth" like with the different eyes after this clip, like good story.

  • wow i really liked the 3 short stories he told, very immersive.

  • Great video, it took me some time to get trough it all and make notes from it, but it was worth every minute! Thanks, I now got a way better view of storytelling and what I can use it for!

  • I have been studying Influence and Persuasion for quite sometime now. All this while I had been coming across the impact of Story and/or Storytelling in various forms. Stories are very important while you try to persuade someone, a kid, adult or elderly. This work of Prof Brian is the most detailed work in understanding Storytelling as he specializes in this. I must thank you professor for the detailed work you have done.

  • what a great video.. i had my attention from the very start.. i couldnt take my eyes away and thats alot to say cause i get bored easy haha

  • wonderful! I love it.

  • 45 minutes well spent... thank you!

  • Thank you for your presentation. I especially appreciated your clarity and the story of the stonecutter, at the end of your lecture.

  • boingsomeness: Are you saying it's kinda like Dead Poet's Society where the poetry text book taught poetry on a mathematical-like scale? But I will say that he's not really intending to storytell here, he's just teaching about storytelling. Didactic form isn't really a bad way. It's more efficient. Hmm, that sounded like Hitler a little. :)

  • This is very useful for my project! Thanks very much~ From Italy

  • useful and helpful. thanks professor.

  • Zuzu's petals!

  • I think u totally missed the point... in fact, u missed several points. He breaks down storytelling to explain why it's effective and what makes it 'work.' There is nothing wrong with that at all.

  • well said apha1bravo1charlie1 - its also great that boingsomeness has a passion for storytelling and I encourage him/her to keep it up!

  • @Alpha1Bravo1Charlie1 Maybe, if you listened you'd find out...

  • Very good lecture, thanks for putting it on youtube!

  • i hate when my collars do that..

  • tshnvr: Why would anyone take the time to make such a statement?

  • Interesting, but audio syncronization is broken after the first half.

  • very interesting video! thank you

    best regards from germany

    Vanessa Eden

  • i think you're projecting yourself onto him.

  • @defdeezy Mayby you are projecting yourself on to the person who you thinks is projecting onto another person. So you might be projecting a projection or I might be projecting right now.

  • The 3 stories tales that you tell in your lecture-demonstration connect well with the theory you present in practice, particulary well told with great feeling with the last story, "The Stonecutter." I too like using this story with college-level public speaking students as well as with students whose native languages are not English, and look forward to further lecture-demonstrations by Professor Brian Sturm. Thanks you for your great presentation!

  • As a teaching artist, I find it incredibly valuable to have links to actual courses in the subject. A great way to develop your own online, professional development.

    BRAVO!

  • I watched about a third, and I must say, pretty lame. I see what is trying to be done, but their is a lot of hot air trying to communicate a few points that should be understood.

  • Hear, hear.

  • those who can't do, teach. badly.

  • Hey, I saw great storytelling Off-Broadway: Life in a Marital Institution. Kinda like Spalding Gray, and really very funny ...

  • Buddy, I hate to be the one to point out the obvious, but your story-telling skills are terrible. In order to tell a story, you first have keep the audience in the room. You achieve this by locking the door and use the implied threat of giving the listener a failing grade.

Outside of a college classroom, you couln't hold the attention of anyone over the age of three.

  • What would have happened if Truth wore multicolor body paint, covering everything except for her nipples and Bush?

  • She wouldn't be truth anymore.

  • This was extremely difficult to listen to.

The monotone voice was very boring and the core concepts over 45 minutes could have been reduced to 5 or 6 minutes

  • what a fag.......who would watch the whole thing

  • Somebody actually listening and learning.

  • Why not go to the Folklore Inssitute at Indiana University in order to learn storytelling?

  • Hello Professor Brian I saw your lecture and I think it is a good research about what happens after a person listens a story. It could also add that stories make people behaviours and way of being. So that, most of the time, women we are always looking for the blue prince charming told in children stories.

  • the audio and video seems to be out of sync, I downloaded the mp4 but also in that file the lipsynchronisation is terrible, it's a pity because it is a very interesting lecture

  • "includes" is spelled wrong in the description.

  • lol, whats with the opening music!? its demonic... :0

  • This is great stuff. Come watch my storyboard style of storytelling at Victoriossecret!

  • This is GREAT but I was falling to sleep 1/2 way into it. I will take a nap (as I am old and tired) and then revisit "the rest of this story":-)

  • seht das video an flatland 2006

    see that video flatland 2006

  • That was great. i watched the entire thing! he was good

  • Good video!

  • u r a good teacher but that still make me wanna sleep

  • Once upon a time. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • beeeee

  • nice

  • Th's not a story , that's a joke. boring

  • Not a bad clip. Improve on it

  • im a sex addict

  • SALUTI DA NAPOLI!

  • very nice

  • "he became the most powerful thing of all; he became himself."

    very nice.

  • This is a gem. I'll share this find with my friends.

  • Excellent lecture by someone who talks the talk, and walks the walk. Great to hear the stonecutter story again. I first heard it twenty years ago, and it has pretty much shaped my life. Thanks.

  • Very good lecture! Thanks for that :)

  • Hey Brian,

It is good lecture. I will share it to my friends.
