I don't usually care for Lupe Fiasco. Nothing personal to him, I just don't like rap (He is an amazing lyricist though, I've never had trouble admitting that). But this song is one of my favorites of all time. The lyrics are deep and meaningful as always--and as always, that is an indescribable understatement.
This is one of the only rap songs I've ever liked. The vocals, the beat, the over all effect of the song makes this sincerely fantastic music.
The "disease" is clearly a metaphor. Personally, I think it's a metaphor for our country's corruption. "Refine the receiver and plant it during the panic and short it, it reports back everything in your mind" referring to the post-9/11 nationwide phone tapping? The three lines prior are self-explanatory. The government controls the media ("designed and broadcasted from the masters") and the media shows you what they want to show you ("to the masses") "through the antennas on top of our shrine."
@douchiedude The "disease" is what The Streets (the metaphysical character Lupe created in the Coolest) is doing. The actual streets (the drug/pimping/etc game) can destroy lives, and it spreads contagiously, like a disease. The Streets (the character) is destroying everything around her physically, while the streets (drugs/etc) destroys affiliated with it (crackheads, prostitutes, etc.).
@youngj1921 I know what The Streets resembles, I think she ties into everything I said. Perhaps instead of using the entire country in my comment, I should have used The Streets. However, the examples I gave plus ones like "the new weather burned the feathers off everything flying" (possibly a global warming reference) seems to represent our country's issues, which wouldn't be the first time Lu raps about it. Either way, the second verse is one of the greatest verses I've ever heard.
@douchiedude EXACTLY. The Streets (in Lupe's story) is the cause of all this. In reality the processes that get quick money like drug dealing and prostitution, because thats what the Streets resembles. The Streets is apparently a bitch, he seduces Michael Young History, makes his peddle drugs for the Game (the 3rd character), and leaves him when the money stops flowing. So Lu is using the Streets as the representation of the causes of all the issues in the first verse.
@youngj1921 Yeah the Streets actually represents a chick who's a gold-digger/manipulator. "Death is on the tip of her tongue and dangers at the tip of her fingers" I think is saying she puts you in danger physically but her manipulative words are what will get you killed. rapgenius(dot)com/posts/Lupe-fiasco-the-proust-of-rap is actually really interesting to read, explains the story a bit.
@youngj1921 Oh to add, Lu said that he makes it 50% him and 50% for the listeners to figure out. We're all going to differ, but those things are what instantly comes to mind when I read the lyrics in the second verse.
@KushinOfficial Wtf you're pretty much implying the same thing, obviously if you're saying it looks like an Illuminati cover then Lupe must be in the Illuminati but he's not... read WoodKidFan's comment it's supposed to represent the characters of astory.
@KushinOfficial Lol no, the cover is the symbol of each of the 3 characters this album portrays and tells their story in, nothing to do with anything of that sort. Do research, because Lupe Fiasco said it himself.
i like lupe better wit his skate board/pharrell/neptunes bang out! the rock is cool, but every body can't do rock. gotta have the craft to transition back in forth like pharrell!
I always took this song as the natural continuation of "The Cool." After Micheal Young History rose from the dead, he started a zombie apocalypse.
{(Level Deeper) Of course, since Lupe said *the zombie* in "The Cool" is a personification of all the negative things that are portrayed as cool, a *zombie apocalypse* is probably a metaphor for a culture that perpetuates these portrayals, and then blame each other when things go wrong}
Lupe reeeeaaaally loves metaphors... things get confusing quick.
@cKunke2 Wasn't his fault. Look into the controversies surrounding the album and you'll realize just how pissed Lupe was. Also, not all of his songs are sell outs, sorry :\
Lupe Fiasco is one of the best rappers of all time. One more record like The Cool, and he is rap legend in my book. I'd put him in the same sentence as 2Pac, Eminem, Biggie, Kool G, Rakim, and even Nas. He's one of the best.
They are both the same since it spreads through the body and affects your mind. Unless you have never been in love you wont understand this song. Read the lyrics properly!

@SporkTsar It's all good, because we now know Lupe is dropping Food and Liquor 2 soon, so we've got another classic on the way. @superpeelam WHY does anyone like this man? Because he speaks the truth, because we can relate, because he does not degrade women, because he gives Hip Hop a GOOD name, because he INSPIRES and MOTIVATES, because he encourages positivity, because he is DIFFERENT, and because this list can go on and on, but if you failed to see why by now, don't bother listening to his music. Simple as that.
@fiascofan34 he's washed up....we all know The Cool and Food and Liquor are classic and can never be taken away from him. But the trash he's producing now is sad.
@bgold1212 you do realized that he was forced to do most of those songs by Atlantic right? Why else do you think it took 4 years to produce? Lupe didnt want to release it but only did because his fans wanted him to so bad. Besides, if you listen to the lyrics of Lasers in many of the songs it is still classic Lupe. It just the beats that were made more mainstream.
@superpeelam because he is not afraid to say what he thinks. one great example is that he literatly called obama a terrioust on the oriely factor and because he is diffrent and he is a good raper and cares for the poor and homeless and other countrys in poverty, and because he is muslem and muslims are cool
@djmercilest i believe thats what this is about...who the hell said a zombie apocalypse???? WTF?? the whole second verse of the song woulnd't make sense then

@sheckfron clearly you have no idea what your talking about he is against obama and has no problem telling you he dont spend time boastin about material shit u musta just started listening to rap or u seen some dumbass videos on youtube bout illuminati so cut the bullshit smh @ newbies and this rap shit
this is cool i have the beat of this song with just the chorus and me and my friends were like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!! WHO SINGS THIS" glad we finally found it, idk if lupe just found that beat and decided to do somethin with it or whatever but it sounds good anyway
@sosoathomeworking The sign is a reference to "The Cool" a character that Lupe made up. The skeleton represents his boss/dad, The Game. The Game allegedly arranged to kill the Cool. The Heartlock represents the Streets, The Game's lover. A reason that The Game killed The Cool was because she was having an affair with her. The Bone Hand represtents the Cool. The Cool is too bad for hell and too bad for heaven so he is sent to stay on earth for a bigger purpose. In the Song (cont.)
@sosoathomeworking The Cool, Lupe says that he rises from his grave after killed and his right hand has become all bone. So basically The Cool is now a zombie. If you want to learn more research it.
@sosoathomeworking its a logo to a story of a boy called Micheal young history.its a story that Lupe tells through his songs. Google it and see what comes up.
The Mayans predicted the world would be over in 2012, well if F&L2's released next year, we'll know their reasoning. This world can't handle Lupe...
This song is such a powerful testament to the times we are in.

I like the song but does this sign mean?
sosoathomeworking 6 months ago
@sosoathomeworking The sign is a reference to "The Cool" a character that Lupe made up. The skeleton represents his boss/dad, The Game. The Game allegedly arranged to kill the Cool. The Heartlock represents the Streets, The Game's lover. A reason that The Game killed The Cool was because she was having an affair with her. The Bone Hand represtents the Cool. The Cool is too bad for hell and too bad for heaven so he is sent to stay on earth for a bigger purpose. In the Song (cont.)
JbytheBay24 6 months ago
@sosoathomeworking The Cool, Lupe says that he rises from his grave after killed and his right hand has become all bone. So basically The Cool is now a zombie. If you want to learn more research it.
JbytheBay24 6 months ago
@sosoathomeworking its a logo to a story of a boy called Micheal young history.its a story that Lupe tells through his songs. Google it and see what comes up.
bboysnyper5 6 months ago
I swear in the begining it sounds like he said"When the Stars are Align" like if you think it would be better this way lol

The Mayans predicted the world would be over in 2012, well if F&L2's released next year, we'll know their reasoning. This world can't handle Lupe...
