  • for me ..... no other JE was quiet like this one.

  • This didn't do it for me- though it's incomplete I LOVE the 2011 version it's beautiful!!! But I will say that gainsbourg looks exactly what I pictured Jane like in the book

  • 2:18 -- Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuughhuuuuuuuu!

    Darth-Vador's Brother. I present to you Ed-Vador! :D

  • I can't believe Jane would dress up like that even if she was newly wealthy. That's more Georgina's style.

  • Not to mention that the main actress has a soft voice and a very dramatic look which fits perfectly to the role!

  • @AGirlLikeMee I agree,I like this version best,the characters are real.

  • I don't know why the bad critics, I really liked this movie . It was not exaggerated unlike other movies... I did cry during the movie lol and I won't be watching the other copies.

  • @AGirlLikeMee That's too bad you won't watch other copies...the 2006 is absolutely the very best ever! The acting is superb and very very real...it's like you are watching real life unfold. Their acting chemistry together is

    phenomenal!

  • @AGirlLikeMee I agree.

  • This is stupid! WTF? THIS HAS NO FREAKING PASSION!

  • Having originally been voted up many times for saying this was passionless a year ago, I've just watched both versions and concluded that although this DID have less going on in it, the 2006 version seems a little contrived and Jane's happiness is a little too Jolly. I've got to read the book again, I don't even remember how Brontë made her sound,

  • i love this music so much

  • nope 2006 was better and 2011 was amazing as well jane is to pretty and this scene is just wierd and akwerd.

  • I agree. I think this is a well done version. Too many critics. Considering the absolute crap we see in theatres, any attempt to make a movie of such a timeless classic is something we should support.

  • In my opinion this is a great version. William Hurt's voice completely fits his character. Everyone's acting is really good and the background music really does add a lot to the whole vibe. Even if it doesn't replicate the book completely, it is a great interpretation. My favourite part in the end scene is Rochester's reaction on hearing Jane Eyre's voice.

  • @ReniDi me too,that's my favorite part.

  • I liked Charlotte Gainsbourg's erformance in this, but for the first time I didn't like W Hurt's. It didn't seem real. And that's bad, because I love this actor.

    First time I didn't like a Zefirelli's film

  • I liked Charlotte Gainsbourg's erformance in this, but for the first time I didn't like W Hurt's. It didn't seem real. And that's bad, because I love this actor

  • Stop it a 4:15. beautiful.

this version's ok, but i do like the teasing part which isn't in here. however, i like mr r's voice.

  • I like the 2006 one... I think jane is to pretty in this and the end isn't long enough

  • Comment removed

  • Charlotte's 1 of my fav actresses/singers n she played the best jane eyre of all the jane eyre films i've seen. Also jane eyre supposed to be my kindred literature spirit according to some quiz... lol n is 1 of my fav novels.

  • her hair is the same in every version.

  • I prefer 2006 version.

btw. is it true, there will be a new version in 2011?

  • yes, they are filming it, jane eyre will be played by the girl from alice in wonderland, i think ill be awesome!!!

  • @Matejcha007 And who will play the roles? I wish it won' t be as twisted as this one.

  • @mizzybaylon It's OFFICIAL =) The movie will be released in 2011 - here are some more information mdb.com/title/tt1229822/

Can't wait... although, I think, 'new Jane Eyre' seems to pretty for her role =)

  • The 2006 version is beautiful, is my fave.

  • The 2006 version of this scene is so much better. This was passionless :(

  • @shortsandsheep I disagree.

  • @FairyFlossluver19 Fair enough.

  • @FairyFlossluver19 Yeah! You tell that shortsandsheep lol.

  • @shortsandsheep totally agree!!!!

  • @shortsandsheep it's more of a subtle passion, which makes sense considering the time period this story is set in. i feel like the 2006 version used a more modern sense of passion, creating both pros and cons. of course this is just my opinion

  • @TheEpona92 Fair play, however the way I observe it, passion is passion no matter how prim and proper the era. I think this is clear as you read the book (have you? It's well worth it.) by the way Brontë conveys the sheer build-up feelings of love the characters experience throughout the book.

  • @shortsandsheep i have the book but i have yet to read it (i think i'll put that on my summer to-do list)

  • The most important thing for me about the ending in the book was how Jane tried to tease Rochester out of his melancholy by getting him jealous about St John Rivers. This is critically missing from this ending. 2006 version was the best.

  • I agree that the teasing is one of my favorite parts in other versions, however, would you not also agree that such a scene would be out of place and out of character here? This pair was made a little darker and more serious than normal; they do not tease one another as other actor-pairs did in their portrayals. Their solemnity suits them and it would seem both odd and unnatural to introduce a new dynamic in the last five minutes of film that renders them flirty-fun.

  • I agree - Rochester's sarcasm and humor were a huge part of who he was! And Jane too-she was a perfect sparring partner. I love in the book where he can't undo the knot on his gypsy costume and asks for help and she, angry at being deceived, shoots back "Then BREAK it, sir." :) Jane had a good deal of humor about her, although buried. I see none of it in this film at all.

  • @Sharona1972 Yes, for accuracy but 1996 is definitely my personal favourite!

  • @Sharona1972 a lot of things are missing in this Film. Also, a lot of things have been twisted. Although the actress playing Jane Eyre is good, it's seems to me like the story lost it's soul. If I were Charlotte Bronte, I wouldn't allow the story to be filmed this way; I'd be offended.

  • @Sharona1972 I definately have to agree with you. I love the 2006 version a lot as well. I also love the 1983 version with Timothy Dalton, he did play an excellent Rochester and that version was closer to the book than the other versions, the one thing it lacked at the end was the passion. In the 2006 version it really captured the passion that Jane and Edward had for each other.

  • For me Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt will always be Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester. Jane is exactly how I imagined her and what man could fail to fall for such an alluring voice?

Charlotte Gainsbourg is quite simply the most beautiful plain person I have ever seen!

  • this is my favourite version *__*

  • i thought the actress for this version was really pretty! even though jane's supposed to be plain, it was how i imagined jane was supposed to look.

  • I hate how the girl who played Jane always had her mouth open. I liked this version but I found that very distracting.

  • Strangely enough, this is not favourite version but I can't stop watching it...agree there wasn't much in the way of convincing passion, but all the same theres something about this one.

I think what lets it down is the overly sentimental music (I actually have another soundtrack by the same composer which I love!). Also I think the cinematography, light, overall production value doesn't quite capture the feel or atmosphere of the other versions.:)

  • God that was bad. No passion! Watch Timothy Dalton version.

  • Great scene but i still prefer the 2006 version

  • poor ending, compared to the 2006 version :/

  • aboslutley, one of the best versions i've seen. it captures the real essence of the meaning and ideas the movie portrayed.

  • I don´t like this version. I got my hopes too high since I read it wasdirected by the great Frranco Zeffirelli. I have to say, tgough I like W.Hurt I think he didin´t do Mr. rochester justice and Charlotte G was a little plain.

    The cinematography is great.

  • So I have not seen this movie yet but really want to.. Can yous please tell me whcih version is the best.. So I can hurry up and watch it

  • ok this version is an ass accept it pleas, she just dont have a single touch a of beauty ass the one in 2006 with ruth wilson i love the up lip of that actress its so funny really it is and she express much more than this one how seem to have no life, and their kiss are empty, just can't feel it. sorry buy 2006 version us the best one ever

  • That's my problem with the 2006 version. Jane is supposed to be very plain, yet for today's audience's the maker's made her pretty for the 2006. The BBC version with Timothy Dalton is the best version that I've seen. JMO

  • It fun to see we all love the same movie but we all like the diferent cast of actors

  • iv memorized the entire 2006 movie by heart and I love it! this is a lot different than that one, and i think that I like that one better!

  • I love this version!!

  • shes so ugly it bothers me and its weird to see them kisss

  • The idea of beauty in this story has clearly escaped you.

  • love it :D

  • Maybe it's because this was the first version I saw, but this is my favorite one by far. I did like the 2006 version because it included so much more of the story, but William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg did it best, in my opinion.

  • I had to comment becayse I feel exactly the same way about the 2006 version. It was the first one I saw and I like it the best, can't help it ;)

  • Actually, the 2006 version is very good.

Even if you read and read the book.

I know parts of it by heart. But I still like it.

    They're true to the essetials.

If you like Jane Eyre word by word try the audio book read my Susan Erckson!

You can't expect them to make a movie tats like a reading of a book!

  • Only those who have not read the book could ever like the 2006 BBC version. To those of us who have read and re-read the book, the more recent version was insufferable...oh, the shameless way they butchered the language of the novel! The 1983 BBC version, with all its faults, is still the best of its kind,I think. Timothy Dalton was and remains the definitive Rochester (even better than Orson Welles, and it is nigh impossible to be better than Orson Welles).

  • I agree with you completely... to a point. I've seen all versions and only liked the 1983 version. I love how faithful it is to the book - and hate how the others butcher it! The only point I would argue is Dalton's Rochester being the best. I agree he had the brooding part perfect (no one tops his broodiness), but Rochester was also a bit mischievous, which I think Hurt portrayed very well. He is the only thing decent about this version. :)

  • xedra,

Lucky you who have seen all versions!! How did you get hold of the ones made before 1934? I would really like to see them. I have read somewhere that the TV-series from 1963 (correct year?) was very good. Is it?

Now, tell me, what do you think of Patrick Macnee as Mr. Rochester? I find him rather portrait-like (physically, that is). Do you? It is a pity that the script is poor; imagine him in a high quality script like Robin Chapman's for the BBC mini-series 1973. Nice!

  • I ve read and re-read the book and I like 2006 version. I do not specially like 83 version. My favourite ones are 73 and 2006, but all of them have right and wrong things. We all read Jane Eyre but that doesnt mean we have read the same book, so we choose different versions. Personally I enjoy seeing the different features of the novel each version stresses.

  • Rochester is supposed to have amputated his left hand b/c it was burned pretty badly.

  • He still has both his hands! But I guess his eye is scary enough to make up for it eh?

  • the music is overhelming. i really like the movie, jane is maybe cooler then in the book and the small jane in this movie but the film ist still very poetic, intelligent and relaxing.

  • I don't know why people hate this version so much, I have a great fondness for it even though it does not keep very accurately to the book! But films of costumes adaptions never do

  • My problem with this version is luck of passion. If Jane is passable, Mr. Rochester neither look neither act as a book character. 83 and 73 versions are pretty close to the book. This adaptation to me is a notch better than 96 which is not true to the book or time. I admit that music is beatiful, it is easy to watch and supporting cast is good.

  • Sorry I mean 06

  • i dont think any version could ever measure up to the book. they always miss out so much. when i read this scene there was so much more that they said to each other i cried so long and hard. i dont think that i could ever enjoy jane eyre without reading it.

  • The 2006 version is the absolute best, with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. This version is soooo off, it drives me crazy!!! You can barely even tell they're in love! There's no chemistry! And they're too attractive. Go see the 2006 version.

  • no the 1997 version is the best with Ciarán Hinds and Samantha Morton - the 1997 version lives up to the book. 1996 is only hollywood stuff - john hurt and charlotte gainsbourg are good but the film doesnt work... and the 2006 version... well thats ones just fishing for a wide audience - no magic in that

  • Hmmm, I haven't seen the 1997 version in a while. I'll give it another try.

  • what??? out of all of them 2006 is the best!

  • totally, 100% agree

  • I agree with you as well

  • have u read the book!!!! The 1973 version or even the 1983 version is best coz they are the best adapted...the 1997 one is ok but for someone who has not read the book!!!

  • My fave is the 1973 adaptation of the book.

  • And I second it, Donna Catalina1485

    ;-)

  • the 1997 version is so much better

you can see mr rochesters true feelings and passion for her, but on this version you barly notice it before they get married.

  • i like this version... jane is so cold... not showing much emotion... it gives me the chills... lol!!! they are a weird couple!!!

  • I really like this film, and i wonder what music is this, I'd like to have it. Does anybody know?

  • IT'S NANNY FROM 101 DALMATIANS!

  • Yep. Joan Plowright was also married to Sir Lawrence Olivier.

  • This is the worst adaptation of Jane Eyre. Even the 1973 version, which I really disliked, was better. Zero passion here, zero emotion, zero feeling. This Jane is OK (barely) but Rochester is absolutely hor-ri-ble.

  • I agree.

I like the BBC version far more.

  • I do not like this movie. I find it devoid of emotion and passion. I do not think it captures the essence that is Jane and Edward's love. The 2006 BBC version captures it the best. You should watch it. It's long, after all it is a miniseries, but it is well worth your time.

  • Honestly, I think the Jane in this version is almost TOO pretty... she doesn't quite capture the plainness that Jane is supposed to have.

  • Aah,beautiful.

  • I think the actress who plays Jane, portrays her the best. she does a beautiful job

  • It is the ugliest Mr. Rochestor/Jane out of all versions. I have hard time forcing myself to look at him in these scene.

  • They look LOVELY together!!!!

  • Well, Rochester IS suppose to be ugly. And Jane plain. But I suppose you are right. I'm an avid fan of the 2006 adaptation.

  • Rochester should be black haired, phisically strong volcano man. Hurt's Rochester is red haired calm nice guy. Jane should be little as a child and not a tall woman. I don't see any passion. They hardly look at each other during proposal scene. I think C. Hinds is closer to book's appearance than others. My favorite is 83, 73 is pretty good. Sorry but 06 is the worst of all for me. It is long, boring, no true to book and even time.

  • I agree although I have a weakness for this one ! ive always like william hurt !

  • the book was a little too quiet for me. it was peaceful though, the movie is easy to relax to.

  • This scene is my favourite! Love wins evrything!

  • can somone pls sent me this movie i love this version so much of jane eyre

  • Good grief! Turn off those SVU reruns and get your mind out of the gutter. This is Jane Eyre, not Charlotte Forever.

  • i agree; she looks like she's 12 and he looks like he's 50

  • It's amazing scene...

  • I was not too crazy about this version. However, this scene is very beautiful, it is so emotional it makes one want to cry. The music is also very beautiful. But I think the 1983 version is the best esp. this scene. For those who have not seen it I would encourage to do so because the acting is phenomenal.

  • I love so much this version of Jane Eyre.

That was the first version that I see (with 6 years!) and i loved it.

    And the Score ...simply amazing!!

  • i love this version of jane eyre i think charlotte gainsbourg plays jane brilliantly and though william hurt might not be attractive to some i think he plays edward perfectly.

  • She's a good Jane. This one isn't my faved, but I liked it.

  • I'm sorry to say that I see William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg in these rolls better than any other version. William Hurt was not handsome, but sure, he is manly ...

  • I just love this story... yeah I wish things could be like at that time... I mean, I know it was more difficult to live then, but they had something that now we just don't: that eagerness and passion to love truly...

  • Charlotte Gainsbourg... I fell in love with her and this movie. God, it makes me cry every time...

  • this is the most beautiful movie i have ever seen! that guy isnt like good lookin but theres sumthin about him that is jus so hot! i wish tings were still like that!!

  • it's a wonderful movie!william hurt is perfect I red the book several times and I think always Mr Rochester as William Hurt!he's perfect!and jane...wonderful...not beautiful but sweet and strong!

  • I only saw some parts of this, but liked the 2006 version way better. Toby stephens was amazing there!

  • Can u make this movie into cd..i need it!.. or u download the rest of the whole clip...please!please!

  • i love this version and i saw the latest one last night...jane in the new one kinda looks like a duck but i still loved to too. :) no offence. it was awesome

  • How come this dude reminds me of Liam Neesen?

  • to painful to watch, especially after the amazing 2006 version. I'm sorry but this acting is HORRIBLE.

  • where can i watch the whole movie... i really wana watch the whole fing.

  • The best version by far is the Orson Welles/Joan Fontaine version - 1940 I think - He had the grandest voice! :)

  • ditto, the most powerful Rocherster ever seen.

  • :S according to the book I read mr rochester loses a hand in the fire, O.o but i see he has both hands

  • In my opinion this version lacks passion

  • I agree. That was exactly what I was thinking before I read your comment, and was just going to make a comment to that effect. "Lacking in passion" is the perfect way to describe it.

  • It's great,so romantic,the best,love William Hurt as Rochester. Never get bored.

  • I agree with you!!! I absolutely love it!!! And William Hurt as Rochester is great, i love him!

  • 2006 end is far better than this!

  • *tear* i just finished the book and it was so good! *sob* so tragic.

  • I just love this kind of movies......

  • I like this one better but in all movies I miss the "I won't tell him about my dream" part.

  • I wonder, how does it actually end in a book?

  • similar to the end of the 2006 drama words wise when their by the lake and then there's an epilogue sort of chapter which starts "Reader i married him..." and basically tells you that they had children and he regains the sight in one eye what the 2006 bbc drama showed you with the portrait thing x

  • Except in the 2006 one he never regains his sight.

  • the 2006 end might be cheesy but its better than this

  • while the fullness of the novel is not portrayed completely...it still captures the emotions of Edward and Jane...in the best of all films.

  • Thank you!

  • *tears up* I love this movie! lol

  • Their so cute together, Jane and Mr. Rochestor! I think I spelt Rochestor wrong! aw well. but still their so cute togther!
