braille is sort of a dying thing. I actually tend to use my credit card and make transfers from my checking account when I get home. I keep track of everything in my head. The iphone has an app where you wave the bill in front of the camera and it tells you what donomination it is.
Why do people think he couldn't get scammed using a debit/credit card? You're punching in a pin on a keyboard that displays the total. No braille attachment. They might get caught eventually, but as long as the credit card slip matches the receipt, what could the law do?
Also not practical for small amounts. Eventually, having a card linked to a cell phone which reads out the amounts would be helpful, but in the meantime, the US really has to get over its attachment to the "greenback".
@93MickyD1 It was ignorant because you genralized, Americans do not dictate what kind of currency we are given. Right now there is a massive debate about the issue of our current currency but we don't just get to up and chose new bills. Unfortunately we have bigger problems to deal with at the moment.
@bastian74 Nice, so if you always get Ones back, you would have to pay in Ones, too. This would be fun if you have to buy something that costs, lets say 30$
Australian notes have clear plastic "windows" on them, which feel different to the rest of the coin. They have a different shape on each denomination.
My best friend is blind and I've been there when people have tried to rip him off. He's got to deal with that risk every day. What he does in his wallet is he folds the bills in different ways to determine the amount.
Of all countries in the world I didn't think this could happen in the US, where I live it's stipulated in the law that bills have to come in different sizes, colors and textures (an example would be that small triangles are found on a part of the 50 bills and and circles on 100 bills). That way it can cover anything from people with blindness to people suffering from achromatopsia.
It's kinda weird that US citizens thinks Euros are "Monopoly money" and many EU citizens think US Dollars are "stripper money" - the opposite of the usual stereotypes...
When did you yanks start saying 'fiver' and 'tenner'? Is this a recent Britishism that's got over there or have I just missed it all this time... or is it just this guy?
it's incredible, in Mexico we have different marks and sizes for our bills in order to help those who are blind to recognize the denominations of them, and it also happens to help with the spotting of fake bills
American money is the worst, yet they critique bills for other countries, especially Canada's, but it reality, Canada has the some of the best bills in the world. Mr Edison should move there.
@BrockSamson18 But then you have to sign and know where to write the tip/total. And if you ask them to write the tip/total then they can try to screw you and make it higher. Yeah, you can keep track of it, but it's something easily missed.
The Bureau of Printing and Engraving was at the American Council of the Blind convention in the booth next to me, showing several different types of tactile markings for money and taking a survey on which ones were the preferred types. How long this will take to implement is anyone's guess.
@barendbos hey I'd rather have different sized cash so money feels bigger and worth more. Oh, and most European countries want to print more money for good reasons while America is trying to create more jobs out of it. I'd trade in an instant especially since 1,000$= 650 Euro's. It's lame!!
In Canada, there are bumps in the notes to distinguish between them. Not sure if it's braille or their own custom code, but it works. I am really surprised American money still doesn't have that sort of feature.
@Newbie1818 the bumps are aligned in a code. I looked into it a bit after posting my previous comment. One set of 6 bumps means a five, 2 sets means 10, and so on. It's apparantly easier to identify quickly this way, rather than trying to decipher to braille. If you are interested, I suggest you look it up as well. :)
@Survul The code on the Canadian bills is "sort of" braille. Each denomination of bill has the braille code for F embossed on it a number of times - once on the 5, twice on the 10, 3 times on the 20, etc.
We of course don't have 1s and 2s, as we've switched to coins, which are much easier to distinguish by touch.
I remembering hearing a story like five years ago on the news about wanting to change paper money for the blind (as in holes or bumps or something) I wonder why it was never brought up again! I thought that was a great idea.
