Oh my god, i've never before been glad to not find woody guthrie singing, absolutely superb. The construction of the video, your voice, the composition... it's just beautiful!
went to okemah in 1961 and visited the guthrie home there, long abandoned. it was filled with written tributes to guthrie from travelers who'd come from all over the world. it remains the greatest single spontaneous monument to a man i've seen before or since. i learned years later the city of okemah had torn it down. an american tribute to its greatest singer/song writer.
A lovely rendition. Really time to share more of your talent! Please post more --- it doesn't need to be perfect, and chances are it is a lot better than it seems to you.
When I first moved to Oklahoma I was amazed at how nobody hear knows who woody Guthrie is. But now I know how ignorant people are of their own past. Keep the past alive.
Why you are not singing and loading more videos? You got expression and emotion in your voice to make the song meaningful. You infact proved Song/Music is all about expression!
Very moving lyrics and sung with the pathos it deserves. Amazed at the honesty of Woody Guthrie who could write this way despite his father;s uncertain role in the incident. Hard to believe those brutal days were indeed part of the 20th century.
Good for Woody Guthrie for writing this song about A family No one would EVER have heard of (or given a DAMN about) simply because they were guilty of the SIN of being born Black (wrong skin color at that time) WHAT a barbaric act of racism Woody has made sure it should NEVER be forgotten Thanks to his song ! what a genius he was
Zeit: Don't jump to conclusions so quickly. What happened was a barbaric crime. But skin color may not have played as big a role as the fact that the shiriff was killed by the family. Look at Ruby Ridge. A 'White" mother was shot in cold blood becuse her son shot at intruders (he was killed also). I am not saying you are wrong, just giving you a different perspective to think about. Anyway this was a great song about a very tragic and criminal event.
That was really haunting and beautiful. I still have chills. Keep doing Guthrie's songs! There is so much power and emotion in his words. Keep it alive for the next generation!

@LAM045 There are two chords here, and I can tell intervals just fine but I'm a little short of being able to determine accurate pitch by ear.

Dearest Father in Heaven,
Bless this child and bless this day
Of new beginnings.
Smile upon this child
And surround this child, Lord,
With the soft mantle of your love.

Great cover.
I can't tell which I find more distrubing--that the murders where sold as postcards, or the fact that the mob has no problem killing a baby.
GarretSchuelke 3 years ago 4
The murderers who lynched black people in the South (and sometimes other parts of the US) often had postcards of their crimes printed.
This is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Beautiful version, brookeharvey.
