I always thought natural black hair was so beautiful when it showed off its curls. I never could understand why anyone would want to mess with hot combs or chemicals when they could have such naturally blessed curls. My hair is naturally mostly straight with loose waves. I always wished for curls. But I believe in celebrating whatever you are, so I just let my hair be. I wish everyone could be proud of the hair they were born with.

Honestly I think that girls are always going to want the opposite of what they have. However it doesn't mean that a child has a complex. I honestly had no bad thoughts about naps as a child even though I I was relaxed. I knew that getting my hair combed used to hurt, and when I had a texturizer or a kiddie perm it didn't. That's what I cared about back then. We all wore braids and everyone knew my hair wasn't mine because Everyone was doing it.

Hey, aww she's embarassed. You shouldn't make her talk about this in public if she's scared. I think I know what she means. The majority of people have hair that hangs and afro hair is different. It's rare (not alot of people have that type of hair) It's thick, sturdy and it's very easy to make into lots of styles; unfortunately, because alot of people don't have it they make it seem like it's horrible instead of what it really is, rare. Hey, it's a real problem in society. People just will not give a person credit for beauty unless said beauty is their standard. It's sad but true. I was talking to someone earlier about how when I a lady is over-weight, no one ever says she looks beautiful or even pretty. That was cute! I think it's important to educate the young girls about the beauty of natural hair. We were taught to discriminate against what European-Americans called nappy hair. My late grandfather was the first man to tell me my hair was beautiful in its natural state because what we think are naps are actually very tight curls. i remember getting relaxed hair at that age and every age after until i was an adult and being african- it wasn't a pretty sight! i got made fun of constantly in school for being bald headed cause of the damage done to my edges from the perm. some people do just fine with relaxers and some were like me. i wouldn't let any child take that chance.

If i were her mother i would let her presss/flat iron her hair ONLY for special occasions.

My niece's mother has been straightening her hair with a flat iron since she was like 2! I HATED that--but at least it's not a relaxer.

It's summer & my niece is ALWAYS getting her hair wet after playin in water. Her mother re-straightens it every time. I really don't think she knows how to handle natural hair. But she is also a hairstylist and thinks she knows 'best'.
