I appreciate atking your won time to look up this helpful information, but the flags were NOT real and she came from a family who respected America which is why she wanted to do this porject. It saddens me when people who object her veiws do not even take the time to look at her own reasons why she did what she did. They automatically jump to hasty conclusions and it disgusts me to EVERY extent.
thank you for putting this video on here. I know you don't have to respect the flag if you're a pussy hippie student at UMF, but you don't try to use it as a doormat. A veteran would have kicked the ass of the person whose "project" this was, and if they didn't, I would!!! no questions asked!
The entire thing was part of a 'gorilla' art project. According to Federal Law, those were not actual flags.
Besides, the flag does not protect our freedom - the bill of rights does. The flag is a symbol and as long as we allow people to express their rights, the flag will be disgraced, burned, etc. And we can all complain about or honor that choice because of where we live. Be open-minded, people.
Although I don't agree with your argument, I really like the delivery and the thought put into this video.
Flags are just symbols; that's the very definition of a flag. They symbolize and represent something. Pirates had them, sports teams have them, the military. What you feel for the American flag isn't necessarily what others think of the American flag. All I'm saying is that Susan Crane had every right to artistically express herself and make her point in the way she did so.
UMaine officers are weird at most schools in Maine. Recently at UMaine Orono two UMaine Public Safety officers stole a vehicle and was driving drunk at a local campground, local police made an arrest after the Public Safety officers became bulligerant. Drugs and Pot were found as well as alcohol. There were children in the campground were the officers were joy riding. But stuff like this is kept out of local papers. UMaine is full of drunks!
Wow you must've been picked on or some other shit that traumatized you here in Maine because you're fucking crazy. I went to UMaine Orono AND Farmington, and in both places, no majority of people were either 'mean' or 'weird.' There will always be those people that are in ANY state, so stop lumping everyone together. Fucking close minded asshole is what you are.
kateaudrey85, even if I was traumatized by bing picked on (or anyone else) doesn't make them "Crazy". You are a prime example are the type of people I am talking about. They gang up on someone and try to make them look crazy or feel bad about themselves. Also just because you disagree with my comments doesn't mean you should be abusive and call people names. Which is typical of people from your area. Not very nice or mature.
At UMaine Orono a month or so later a student placed tons of images of "Homeless People" on the Union floor where a lot of people walk. I know they were trying to bring to our attention about homelessness but it felt wrong to walk on them. I ended up walking back down stairs and around the building so I wouldn't need to step all over homeless people faces on the floor.
I grew up on Maine and have gone to UMaine Orono and have also met people from UMF. I can safely say these people are weird, Mainers are very passive agressive people. They are very disturbed peoople. Don't believe the stereotype that Mainers are friendly because they not. Very arogant people in Maine. Also very bigoted towards blacks as well but more or less passive agressive to blacks until they move away so the bigotry in Maine flys under the radar. This flag thing comes to no surprise to me.
@davidscalling Dont be stupid. I don't know who you interacted with but Mainers are not bigots, or weird, or arogant. You are just someone who likes to run their mouth and you don't have enough sense to realize that you are generalizing Mainers because of a few people you met. I've never met you but I can tell you right now that those people were probably arogant to you because you are some kind of ass hole or weird person yourself.
@RyansCurse actually I am from Maine and I call you that Mainers are a bunch of fucking liberal idiots. And if you dont believe me try living and here and tell me im wrong.
By the way, how many times have you been outraged about a flag t-shirt left on the ground, or sexy flag bikinis. What about getting potato salad on those flag napkins? If you say never, then it does matter what the flag is made out of. I will always salute the flag, but I don't go around saluting all the flag napkins I see (although I do salute the bikinis once in a while) :)
Punishing anyone for defacing or "defiling" the flag is not only against the first amendment, it destroys the ideals and the principles that the flag stands just to preserve the material it is made of.
Banning or prosecuting people for "defiling" the flag undermines everything that the flag stands for.
I have also fought for this country and I am willing to give my life so that others have the freedom to express themselves, even if I don't like it!
Ryan, I just saw your video. I must tell you that I am a student at UMF and I did not and do not support this project. I am deeply saddened at the fact that the entire student body is being judged by this one student's actions. Please know that most of us at UMF support our troops and send out a sincere "thank you" for every sacrifice you and other veterans have made. It is my belief that the exact reason why you do not disrespect the American flag is because in this country you can.Amy McDaniel
I agree with you Ryan. Our Flag should NOT be disgraced like this. It is non patriotic, un-American, disrespectful, and disgusting that someone who takes advantage of the freedoms of this country does that to the Flag that represents us. If they don't want to respect our flag then get the he** out of this country! We have people fighting for our freedoms, how do you think they feel? If you won't stand behind us, then stand in front of us, you are more useful stopping bullets. Shane Kavin US Army
Art student's (shake of head). They are a rare breed of moron. They pay thousands of dollars at UMF to make offending obsticle corses. My brother is an art major here and his plans after graduation are to live under a bridge in Boston. At least he treats the flag with respect.
It is a saddens me to think that UMF allowed such a terroist act to occur. All those involved should be charged as terrorists and detained as terrorists in a military facility.
To the comment below, like he says in the video it does not matter what the flag is made of, no matter how many stars or stripes it has. If you look at it and see and American flag then under the code it is an American flag!
The student who did the project is a conservative Republican.
Her dad, a 25-year vet, was with her.
Because she cared about the flag she researched flag protocol, found that flags made out of plastic don't qualify, and made her flags out of that. She also altered the stars.
She thought that the flag had stopped standing for the principles it should, and had started standing just for power.
Again the inconvenient facts: the student's a 40-year-old rehab major (studying helping folks recover from injuries), a conservative Republican from a military family, at school after raising a family, who loves what she thinks the flag ought to, & used to, represent. She researched flag etiquette, found (she thought) that flags made out of plastic don't qualify, made her flags out of that, and also altered the stars.
But the facts make all the fun outrage impossible, so to hell with the facts.
RYAN:THIS ARTIST IS ON YOUR SIDE. If you had spent any time thinking about it, you would see the student might be placing facsimile (obvious non-flags) on the floor to gauge how people would respond at a time when we are both angry at our administration and, at the same time, emphatically nationalistic (defensive of the USA).
Watching again, I'd like to remark that while I support the 1st amendment's defense of Susan Crane's project, I'm amazed by the respect and politeness in your video. Most of the other video's I've seen have been crude, ill-prepared, and just excessively aggressive. This is doubtlessly the best video on this side I've seen. Thumbs up :)

Your Flag was defiled when you started to torture people and elected an idiot like George W Bush as your leader.
Do a search on YouTube for the term "Stupid Americans" and you will see why so many of us are seriously worried about your nation

The idea was to show disrespect and if not - bring 'the student' here with her Dad.
That was rather disgusting the way the Veteran was disrespected.
