Thom does incredibly well to keep in time clicking with that poppy drum thing at the begining ;) very clever song in the payin attention it has 5 bars then repeats whereas usual bands would use 4 genius as the song is called 2+2=5
I WANT TO SEE THIS FULL CONCERT! Anyone know if it's available somewhere? I can't even imagine what it would've been like if I had the internet in the late seventies and early eighties when I was still in high school. OOPS, I let my age out. That's ok. I will be sitting in my rocking chair in my 80s rocking out to some awesome music like this! FUCK YEAH!
@nge1301 i don't really know whether you have a lot of musical knowledge, so i'll explain assuming you don't.
The first part of this song has an unusual 7/8 beat. It means in basic terms that you must count to 7 and then return to 1 at a certain (fast) speed. People were clapping every 2 "numbers", in a 4/4 beat. Basically they were off-beat because the song "beat count" returned to 1 everytime the people's "beat count" reached 3.5. Was that clear enough? :P
@nge1301 ok i admit i only took the intro in consideration. And sorry to insist on it again, but the people weren't clapping in every beat in the intro. They were clapping every 2 beats, which puts them off-beat every other turn.
@nge1301 the problem in this discussion is the following: I say (with 100% belief) that they are clapping on every other beat, you say it's in every beat. I suggest that you count the actual beats at twice the speed.
@Gottheit2008 ok, at 0:05, I'm sure you'd agree with me that Thom is snapping his fingers in every beat, right? And the crowd is following him, clapping on every beat, right?
Just to make sure we're on the same page here, Jonnys Guitar is playing 2 notes a beat.
@nge1301@nge1301 that's the problem! Thom isn't snapping in every beat! He is snapping in beats 1, 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6, 1, 3, ... and that is why the clapping goes off-beat. I accept that it is absolutely normal for crowds to speed up the clapping and go off-beat but I sincerely believe that this isn't the case. For you to understand exactly how I believe (with a lot of confidence) that the metronome for this song is, go to Webmetronome . com and set 150 bpm, 7 beats p/cycle, accent on 1
@Gottheit2008 do you agree that Thom is snapping his fingers in 150bpm? because that's what he's doing. And, like you said, the intro is in 150bpm, 7/8.
@nge1301 i tried to count to 7 at the rhythm thom is snapping and well.. it does work! :P what I did was always counting at twice the speed and it always worked (14-beat in this case) i admit, you're right xD still, i'm not yet sure which speed fits best, thom's 7-beat or twice as much.
at the end of such an interpretation one should always leave the 5-7 seconds where the people scream like crazy. even after a video this song needs to be properly acclaimed!
I wake up to hail to the thief playing every morning; sometimes i lie in bed and listen instead of getting up and being part of a world about to crumble
@NahuelEncina mm en realidad si se solo quise comentar desde un aspecto literario y no metaforico ... SI SE DE QUE SE TRATA ... no me vengas a tachar de ignorante
for those unfamiliar with Radiohead's live work - don't take too much from the Reading performance...it was pretty bad by Radiohead standards...Thom sounded off and there were quite a few sloppy bits from the band and technical glitches. I'm not being a douche - I just hope people know that there are many many better gigs out there to watch :)
@villiparis Earl's Court 2003 - the 2nd night ---google ronald vdberg Radiohead for his recordings site and find the show - its the one that starts with There There/2+2=5/Sit Down, Stand Up...etc. Its AMAZING!
and Glasto '03. There are loads more but I can't think off the top of my head right now
@TehWinnerz I'm not so sure. A few of the songs that they didn't upload were fucking especially great. Nude was great and Climbing up the Walls blew the fucking house down!
I don't know if thom was quite drunk or something but he wasn't really at his best. I mean he seemed to be giving it all but didn't sound as good as he can.
I was there.. 1:49 was the most amazing moment because while seeing them, there are no dickheads moshing or anything, just people loving the music, every movement reflecting the mood: swaying for "Everything in its right place", singing along with arms in the air for "Karma Police" and here, in unison, after swaying for the beginning of the song, everyone erupted into a pogoing mass, screaming "YOU HAVE NOT BEEN PAYING ATTENTION!"
What I love almost as much as this band/album/song/live video is how the audience slowly collectively gives up clapping at the odd time section at the beginning xD
@JCGronewold hahahaha welll the ppl standin still sucks... if i was there.. it would b bunny jump everywhere... "payin attention.. payin attention..... yeeeaahhhhh"
it was really wierd in the crowd. half the people were going mental, jumping all over the place and half were standing perfectly still with their jaws dropped. in awe.
@fbocfbocfboc There's a formula that works mathmatically to make 2+2=5. Hell reject the viewpoint that 2 stands for "two" the "defined" term....and it can equal dog.
kaisqais, its definitely not a fender jazzmaster. i think its a gibson es 375 or es 345, i'm not 100% sure because i'm no gibson guy, i'm a fender guy HAHA

@Gottheit2008 nah dude, I know that the song is in 7/8
but the people were clapping in every beat, so its irrelevant if the song is in 7/8, they were just off beat
just take 1:25 as an example. that part is in 4/4, and they were still off beat.
