I'm always amazed at how dumb liberals are. Only LEFTISTS establish totalitarian states like that portrayed in the film: the USSR, PRC, Nazi Germany, Mussolini's Italy, etc. Those were all states run by people who believed in socialism.
This film - a latter-day 1984 - clearly denounces tyranny, authoritarianism and slavery - in this case, a misogynistic Christian Theocracy, (not unlike The Taliban). I wonder if this irony was lost on Robert Duvall, who backed McCain-Palin!! One has to wonder.
Ridiculous comments here. "Evangelicals, who also happen to believe that a woman insn't worth much until she's had and reared children..." ???? Umm, okay, where the heck do you get this crap? I mean, honestly, I'm a Christian and I don't know a single person who would support such an idea. This just ticks me off. My entire family is "Evangelical" and they look down on me for getting married at 22 instead of finishing my law degree first and pursuing my career. So much for your stupid theory.
My dear friends, Ms. Attwood is a great writer, but that has nothing to do with Gov Palin. I am a christain, and a republican but, I don 't want to subjgate anyone.
I am also disabled, Gov. Palin offered me hope, to lead an equal life, liberals offer me bromides and paternalism.
I think the Aunt's of Ms. Attwood's world are really rehab guru's whose only motive is power and forcing some godless, diet agenda on the likes of me
You are right. My girlfriend had to comment on this book for her A level and she has read it 20 times since. She loves the book but also said at the recent presidential elections that if a Republican gets in power again, she looks like the sort who would ensure that women never work and just have children (based on the fact that she is a proven liar and hypocrite).
That has to be one of the most moronic comments I've ever heard. Sarah Palin works. Why would she keep other women from working? Did that even dawn on you? Apparently not.
I cannot get over how moronic liberals like you really are.
Sarah Palin works? She's a dropout Governor. She only answers softball questions. She speaks pidgin English learned from Bible Tracts. Go back to Russia, Vlad....
This is a totally brainless, baseless, and contemptible comparison. In the world of Atwood's novel, Sarah Palin would never have gotten even remotely close to the Vice Presidency. For anyone to suggest that Atwood's novel in any way represents the world of 2008 America is disgraceful. This is an example of political partisanship and hatred at its very worst. If Sarah Palin were a Democrat, she would be hailed as a pioneer, but since she is a Republican, she is reviled by feminists. Sheesh!
A) Sarah Palin is not smart enough to be a Democrat.
B) No one is suggesting that Atwood's novel "represents the world of 2008," it's set in "the future," that's the whole trope of the book. I guess it takes a Republican to miss such an obvious point.
C) Palin is reviled by thinking people because she personifies empty Republican hypocrisy.
D) There's nothing wrong with hating traitors (i.e. Republicans)
You're such an idiot. Do you ever think your own thoughts, or do you just parrot Flush Slimeball? Sarah Palin is a nothing with a taste for fame, who will say anything to keep the spotlight on her. Your "President," the War Profiteering Puppet Criminal, Bush, is the one who shredded our economy, and your Limbaugh-Bubble talking points are as vapid and clueless as you are. You need to go back to school, and learn what "socialist" really means, before you start imitating your idol, that pig, Rush.
@oldnewsclipster Unemployment has skyrocketed under Obama and will continue to do so. Watch food and gas prices skyrocket too. THe Obama inflation will kill us. You'll see.
"lezfriend": "If Palin were a Democrat.....!!!" How ridiculous; the quintessential OXYMORON!!! She's reviled by feminists because her very ideology and beliefs make her the antithesis of everything that defines feminism, and, for that matter, modern-day Democratic philosophy and ideology. Think things out rationally before making a comment. SHEESH!!!
So, you GOP morons show your real mentality: looks over brains, substance, character, etc. These clowns brag that "our women are good-looking", conveniently leaving out the part about their being dumb as a sack of doorknobs, and having about as much substance as the inside of a balloon. Beauty's only skin-deep; and a beautiful, smiling face like Ms. Palin and her ilk mean nothing. Look beneath the surface, and there is a pit of putrid, depraved evil.
I read the Handmaids Tale last year&it gave me chills. For some reason, ever since Sarah Palin came on the scene,I keep replaying that book in my mind over and over. I don't find her threatening so much as I do her supporters, Evangelicals who also happen to believe that a woman isnt worth much unless she's had and reared children. Palin herself is just a parrot,an attractive mouthpiece of the Republican party in order to secure the votes of a group of people full of hate and self-righteousness.

That's very true. There is a broad spectrum of belief within evangelicalism abouit what the precsie role of women in modern society should be.

Dumbass, the movie is 20 years old. It is the future NOW. Get it?
Sarah Palin has shown herself to be downright brilliant compared to the half-Kenyan job killer we have running the show right now.
Palin is reviled by mean people with bloated egos. That was proven by Frank Luntz within the last few days.
The "traitors" are the ones who voted for a socialist who is now shredding our economy, siding with terrorists and destroying our constitution.

Palin is hated by feminists because they will never be as successful as she has been while still looking that good after having several children.
What feminist was on a major presidential ticket after being a very popular governor in the last 20 years? None.
What feminist looks as good as Palin? Very, very few.
What feminist has had several children, a handsome husband and a clearly happy family?
Almost none.
Palin has all the things feminists are too sterile to ever possess.
