I bought this on DVD a couple of years ago (not knowing it wasn't the new movie), and I was really impressed. No, not by the special effects or the good looks of the actors, but because of the acting and storyline! This adaption is 10000x better then the awful films.
This music is so uplifting, so inspiring. It kind of makes me feel better when I am really depressed and feeling that my life isn't going anywhere. I guess it's sort of like phoenix song from the Harry Potter books.
Harry Potter was my first fandom (though I'd only seen the films back then), but The Chronicles of Narnia were the first books I read and really loved.
And then I saw BBC's version and I love it as much as I love the books.
Ive seen both this and the Disney. They both have their own strengths. Dont make me pick. This is more like the Rankin-Baas Hobbit and Disney is more like the Peter Jackson LOTR. All of these are epic and magical in their own way and each shows a part that the whole cant do without. Together, they add up to Amazing Epicness.
#1 reason to learn how to play french horn. Bonus pts if u one-man-band it with a penny whistle, sleigh bells, and a violin. Somehow. Infinite Bonus pts if u get that idea from Bert from Mary Poppins. British things are epic.
Oh wow - this just takes me back. Whilst the new movies are technically better than the old ones they always felt a bit too Disneyfied to me - they never quite captured the FEEL of Narnia like the old ones did. I will never forget the music from the old movies and Aslan's deep, soothing voice. So haunting and beautiful and so very Narnian.
Honestly... I like the newer movies better, but the theme song from this one is probably better then the theme song from the new ones.. It just captures the whole... FEEL of Narnia. XD
@TheSurvival15 You got it exactly right. I liked the older movies all right when I was a kid, but it is this theme that has stuck with me into adulthood. It comforts and haunts at the same time; it FEELS Narnian in ways I can't put into words :)
Oh wow I have fantastic memories of loving Narnia when I was a child and the BBC versions were spectacular! Loved it and the music makes me cry with happiness at hearing it once again!!!
I do remember distinctly that there was a roar at the end of the music...just wondering if this is a different version of that music? BTW, I *LOVE* the music and the show itself! Thanks for sharing it. :)
So, I've been watching a LOT of Doctor Who and Indiana Jones and I almost forgot about Narnia and this music (:OOOO), but then I found this video again and I start to remember everything. :)

Interesting fact: C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien were friends, but Tolkien didn't like the Narnia movies because the meanings in them were too obvious. He believed a good book had meanings and morals that were there if you looked for them, but not there if you didn't want to see them. To him, C. S. Lewis' were too "up front and glaring". Personally, I think Tolkien's books are better (though you can hardly compare the two!) than C. S. Lewis'.
I think these Narnia movies have more heart in them than the new ones. The new ones are great and all (much less painful special effects :) but these old ones seem to capture the soul of the story....... gorgeous music too.
Yep.. i knew CS Lewis was from Ireland...which was part of the UK when he was born (its now Northern Ireland which remains part of the UK)
This all comes under British literature ...and not long ago i did an essay on Lewis and JRR Tolkien.. who were great friends and known as the inklings in Oxford.
This is the real Narnia for me. The new Narnia movies are good in their own way, but nothing will ever be ale to beat the old Narnia and all the memories. I have read all the books and a few years back my brother managed to get hold of the complete collection of the old Narnia, and I watch it every Christmas (In norway they showed the episodes during Christmas when I was little)
My sister and I grew up with the BBC Narnia adaptations. We were obsessed - taped them all and watched them over and over. Our dad loved it too, we always tuned in together!! I enjoyed the films but you're right, the BBC Narnia was much better.
This IS Narnia. I totally agree. This music brings back so many memories from when I was a little kid and watched all the episodes. The new ones are too commercialized to BE Narnia. These older ones are so much closer to the book. I know the acting wasn't the greatest and they didn't have amazing effects, but some how they were more wholesome.
@Juliegoose03 In a way I find the acting in the old ones better than the new ones in the old ones it somehow feels more natural as if you're just an onlooker on a story that really happened whereas the new one feels like its people playing characters and that ruins the magic a bit. Similar with the effects the talking animals as people in costumes feel more magical than CGI ones. Also the BBC Maugrim scared me so much as a child and still gives me the creeps now. ^^;
I loved this when i was little.... but i always had nightmares form th white witch! My little sister is 6yrs old, and shes just started watching it, and she loves it but we had to buy it all on DVD cos of the videos being so jumpy! haha

I never read the book but I've got the dvd. Tom Baker as a Marshwiggle will be a hard one to beat. He was awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing how they redo the underground kingdom and the giants.
On the whole I liked the Silver Chair, and I liked how they enter Narnia in it. In both Voyage and Chair I like how the setting keeps changing. Not sure if I prefer Eustace as a brat or the mature version, though I did end up naming a WoW toon after him :P
I didn't enjoy the Silver Chair. I felt like the quality had taken a sharp drop. However, I watched the first three as a child and didn't know they'd done Silver Chair until I was in my twenties, hence no nostalgia for me. That may be partly why.

I still remember the thrill I felt when I heard that were movies on Narnia. The music is good and draws you into the world. I also think that even though the costume wasn't great the voice of Aslan really brought him to life well.
We're still talking about the BBC Chronicles, yes? I couldn't agree with you more - Ronald Pickup is the only the voice of Aslan for me. When you put a famous comedian in there, it just doesn't work...at least not for me. And Pickup played it with such strength and heart.

*sighs* this old narnia gives me a pure feeling inside, yes, i agree the music just .... is so...magical,*sighs drifting off to sleep and awakens in narnia*
You really nailed it there! So agree with u! That theme-song and the clouds and the map fills me with memories from when I was a kid and used to watch this show on TV. How magic it was! <3
The music is all and magical and what not... BBC rules that's all I have to say bout that, and a little bit more about other things. This series had some real magic to it... this believable aura that stuck with me over the years. Fairies are REAL!!!
If ur a diehard Narnia fan I can understand that you like these. But otherwise *_* I loved Prince Caspian btw :p Although I know it changed alot because I read the book last year, it felt like it really happened, unlike in the Prince Caspian book. It was a bit unreal and weird tbh.
I have seen the new movies. I don't like them much at all (PC was better than LWW though). Yes, they have excellent CGI and special effects and the look of them is great (and the soundtrack really good) but that's all they're good for. They're not Narnia. They are just another Hollywoodified franchize with way too many changes and deviations. They lack all the heart and soul of the old BBC series.
I whole-heartedly agree with Brejan...the BBC Narnia series was totally beautiful. The movies are soulless and really superficial compared to what this series had. Great video.
Those old BBC Narnia series were perfect. They had some magic about them, something that made me almost feel like a Narnian when I watched them. They still do. Perhaps it sounds silly, but it's the truth. The new ones may have all the fancy special effects in the world, but compared to the BBC ones they are empty and soulles.
Here here redcarpet it was amazing watching the two movies and remembering the BBC series which I also watched during my primary school years in the 90's
Cheers. I was so glad someone went to the effort into making the movies. They did them well, with PERFECT acting and music. I just bought the BBC series on DvD this afternoon and the soundtrack for the first Disney movie. Can't wait to buy Prince Caspian on DvD when it's available.
omg!lots of memories!i remember when i 1st saw bbc's narnia.the only episode i remember was when witch killed aslan!i was crying sooo much!!!:)narnia was just like in the book!!!
tehy can have all the new (fantastic) Narnia movies, but none will have the same effect on me as these- and no music makes me feel more proud to be who I am than this.
And no Aslan's voice is better than this one. Its so warm.
I'm probably one of those few people who like the Disney and the BBC ones equally. The BBC were wonderful, but the Disney is suprisingly good as well. For the first time they did not totally botch the story, like Disney usually does.
No you aren't. I really like the BBC ones, the first one is my favorite; The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe. I think Disney really botched that one. I didn't like it. Although with Prince Caspian they made a comeback I think. I think it was good except for the stupid thing between Susan and Caspain. BBC did really do much on the Prince Caspian story.
I also loved Sophia as Susan. Anna really sucked as Susan. Why did they have to choose her!!!
BBC version so much better than disney version. disney version tried to make out like Narnia is a sweeping epic. it's not. it's small. part of its appeal is its charming smallness.
The cheesy BBC series had a small budget and limited technology but hosted a variety of shakespearean actors, and overall was much more imaginative, low key and fun.
The new movies are all about digital affects, armies, and Lord of the Rings-ish. And that's what I'd expect from big budget.
I wish the BBC had produced all seven of the books.
OMG i loved this wen i was younger but they look so old now! My god why did the BBC always tmiss out those three (same as the new ones r) its reli odd they would never do it wiv harry potter or something but they miss Magician's Nephew Horse and His BOy and the Last Battle
Oh WOW! I used to watch this version of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe on VHS when I was little!!! And then I remember the rest of them airing on TV a few years back! I LOVED that theme song, it brought make so many memories! Thank you so much!!!
Ooooohh, i just want to go back to 88 and be that kid who sat down in front of the telly every sunday @ 11 klock =) Seriusly, i think that nuclear bomb could strike down and wouldn´t hear it at the time the show was on. Thank you for putting this one together
I first saw this when I was 4; I'm now 22. To this day, the witch STILL scares the crap out of me. I don't know what it is about her - maybe it's her eyes.
Me too! I really do think it's her eyes. Just creepy. Fantastic acting. I can't remember when I first watched these movies, but I'm almost 22 as well. I still have the VHS copies but they are starting to perish :(
i just burst into tears watching this...im a 22yr old rugby player...aw man

Couldn't agree more :) There's just something so magical about hearing that melody and seeing those clouds and that map!
HeathenMaiden 3 years ago
You really nailed it there! So agree with u! That theme-song and the clouds and the map fills me with memories from when I was a kid and used to watch this show on TV. How magic it was! <3
Mariejuana89 3 years ago 6
yup the theme music or melody is good and I really liked the old narnia when I was young like 8 years old
madmikeF 3 years ago
Best theme-song ever
Turns me emo everytime I hear it. I thought there was passages to other worlds until I was 10 years old because of this theme... Its pure magic.
Im doing a remake in 2d/3d-animation

man I love these movies! I'll have to pull them out and watch them again sometime.
good times, good times...

The music is all and magical and what not... BBC rules that's all I have to say bout that, and a little bit more about other things. This series had some real magic to it... this believable aura that stuck with me over the years. Fairies are REAL!!!
Drifter0001 3 years ago
Oooo going all nostalgic here!! I remember watching them as a kid and I loved the music theme.

If ur a diehard Narnia fan I can understand that you like these. But otherwise *_* I loved Prince Caspian btw :p Although I know it changed alot because I read the book last year, it felt like it really happened, unlike in the Prince Caspian book. It was a bit unreal and weird tbh.

I realy can't watch this, the animals are harrible and it's just a bad movie i suggest you watch the new one.
Towerdevil 3 years ago
I have seen the new movies. I don't like them much at all (PC was better than LWW though). Yes, they have excellent CGI and special effects and the look of them is great (and the soundtrack really good) but that's all they're good for. They're not Narnia. They are just another Hollywoodified franchize with way too many changes and deviations. They lack all the heart and soul of the old BBC series.
So yes, I still prefer the old films.
HeathenMaiden 3 years ago 2
@HeathenMaiden Coldent agree more.

this was a tv series made nearly twenty years ago so its obvious the effects wouldnt be as good hte new one is terrible
FilmRangers 3 years ago
I whole-heartedly agree with Brejan...the BBC Narnia series was totally beautiful. The movies are soulless and really superficial compared to what this series had. Great video.
InfiniteMajesty 3 years ago 3
Those old BBC Narnia series were perfect. They had some magic about them, something that made me almost feel like a Narnian when I watched them. They still do. Perhaps it sounds silly, but it's the truth. The new ones may have all the fancy special effects in the world, but compared to the BBC ones they are empty and soulles.

I totally agree, I really loved watching this as a kid.

Here here redcarpet it was amazing watching the two movies and remembering the BBC series which I also watched during my primary school years in the 90's
superwoody0703 3 years ago
Cheers. I was so glad someone went to the effort into making the movies. They did them well, with PERFECT acting and music. I just bought the BBC series on DvD this afternoon and the soundtrack for the first Disney movie. Can't wait to buy Prince Caspian on DvD when it's available.

I love both the new films and the BBC series. I grew up in the 1990s wathing this series year after year thoughout primary school

omg!lots of memories!i remember when i 1st saw bbc's narnia.the only episode i remember was when witch killed aslan!i was crying sooo much!!!:)narnia was just like in the book!!!
lisa9192 3 years ago
I can't tell you how much this means to me.
tehy can have all the new (fantastic) Narnia movies, but none will have the same effect on me as these- and no music makes me feel more proud to be who I am than this.
And no Aslan's voice is better than this one. Its so warm.

I think I remember watching this when I was in elementary school.

its ok but i like the books and the new one better because of the acting and drama

I'm probably one of those few people who like the Disney and the BBC ones equally. The BBC were wonderful, but the Disney is suprisingly good as well. For the first time they did not totally botch the story, like Disney usually does.
fdragon010 3 years ago
yeah not to mention they had this song in the BBC one, which I REALLY like.
HelioIgnus 3 years ago
yay! maybe i'm not the only person in the world who doesn't really like disney's new narnia movies?
themusicpenguin 3 years ago 2
Nope, you're not the only one :) The new films are ok as films I guess, but it's just not Narnia for me at all!
HeathenMaiden 3 years ago
No you aren't. I really like the BBC ones, the first one is my favorite; The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe. I think Disney really botched that one. I didn't like it. Although with Prince Caspian they made a comeback I think. I think it was good except for the stupid thing between Susan and Caspain. BBC did really do much on the Prince Caspian story.
I also loved Sophia as Susan. Anna really sucked as Susan. Why did they have to choose her!!!
Kickasschick456 3 years ago 2
The BBC one kinda scares me. I like the new one better, no offense to anyone. I've read the books, too.
Please no one gripe at me for saying that; I still give you 5* for a great video

I totally agree with you, my cousin gave me all her original videos when I had chicked pox when I was about 5 or 6 or somethign & I got hooked!
Absoultley loved these & the books!! xxx
SupawSimba 3 years ago 2
BBC version so much better than disney version. disney version tried to make out like Narnia is a sweeping epic. it's not. it's small. part of its appeal is its charming smallness.
MasterBillie 3 years ago 2
Love this, much better then the new movies, much more true to the books. love the theme song, brings back memories.
shaitan02 3 years ago 2
The cheesy BBC series had a small budget and limited technology but hosted a variety of shakespearean actors, and overall was much more imaginative, low key and fun.
The new movies are all about digital affects, armies, and Lord of the Rings-ish. And that's what I'd expect from big budget.
I wish the BBC had produced all seven of the books.

I first saw this when I was 4; I'm now 22. To this day, the witch STILL scares the crap out of me. I don't know what it is about her - maybe it's her eyes.
drowninginapplesauce 4 years ago
Me too! I really do think it's her eyes. Just creepy. Fantastic acting. I can't remember when I first watched these movies, but I'm almost 22 as well. I still have the VHS copies but they are starting to perish :(
