puzzled by the absence of the fade out riff from "Are We In Trouble Now" from "Golden Heart" which makes the hair stand on my neck, otherwise a good choice. i would place it at #1 and move the rest back one
Oooh dunno if they'd be my favourite ten. TBH there are too many to choose a bunch of favourites from...! I think many of the best come the first two albums: Dire Straits and Communiqué.
A list of one person is always subjective - BUT YOU HAVE WELL DONE!! (compliments). I prefer No.2 (Telegraph road) as No.1. Why? For me the best song in music ever, the best guitar combinated with perfect keyboard solos by Allan Clark
Well the last solo form "Sultans of swing" appears also in "Lady writer" and in my opinion solo from "Where do you think you're going" should also be on that list.
I do have to agree with you all of them, but I think and honorable mention isn't actually a guitar riff. I think the instrumentals in the song "On Every Street" is amazing.
I think sultans hit the top spot because its just so well known. You could play it in my local pub and all the kids would have heard of it. You slam on some telegraph road and all the youngsters would give you strange looks for air guitaring along to it
my favorite and number one since long days is the solo of "it never rains" and i'm surprise and hapy to see that i'm not the only one : number 5 in your top ^^
and even if sultans is a "killer thing" , i prefer the end of telegraph road : epic ;), i put sultans in 3 rd position ;) and i go to see your live top !!!! ;) thank you :o)
@cer00ma he's just like the most skilled guitar player who has ever roamed this planet. clapton and hendrix are the only ones worty of being mentioned in the same sentence as mark,
@cer00ma How can he be the most boring? He wore a headband for fuck's sake you imbecile.
Go back to your Lady Gaga where the stupid bitch has to shoot fireworks out of her vagina in live performances to make up for her severe lack of talent.
@nathanblackcock Well, respect works both ways, mr blackcock! So please respect other peoples lack of taste and the absence of any musical knowledge.
And the headband... well that was the 80's firework! comes from actually working and playing an instrument...
I can imagine an artist like mark knopfler comes across 'boring'... doesn't appear in tabloids, has a wife and kids, plays a boring instrument (guitar...yawn)... Well, than I'd rather be boring!
The thing I love about Mark's solos is that his playing never, at least not to me, sounds scalar. He comes out with these really beautiful melodies that really suit the songs.
his good solos take you on a sort of mental journey. i love them cuz they're not repetitive, wild or senseless. They seem to tell a story and not jump around mindlessly.
Where did you get this video? If you made it yourself you did a great job! I'm sure it was hard work you are very talented. Also I'm a huge M K fan. He is possibly the best guitarist of all time. Definitely the best finger-style guitarist. Also, played by ear only and started out on the piano.
Sultans of the swing solo is of course the best no doubt about that! The best Dire Straits album was the first one (in my opinion). But thanks for the vid. very nice solo's!
listening to this with a smile on my face, and then along comes Tunnel of Love - and i feel like I'm about to be carried away to heaven. I will never lose my love for that song or the solo - it's utterly utterly beautiful.
The best way to do a top10 with MK is a Dire Straits' top 10 and a Solo-Album top 10. Otherwise it won't work. Anyway, didn't you miss «Setting Me Up»? Never mind, all guitar solos from MK are #1 for me. Thanks for posting.
My personal top 10: 1: Tunnel Of Love 2: Sultans Of Swing 3: You And Your Friend 4: Going Home 5: Darling Pretty 6: Brothers In Arms 7: Sons of Scotland - Quiet Theme 8: Piper To The End 9: Ride Across the River 10: Single Handed Sailor Live it's definitely Hill Farmer's Blues. Saw it twice live; lifechanging experience, both times. Everything inside went completely quiet and Heaven gave a sneak peek for a couple of minutes. Then I realized what I've always known: Mark is my musical God.
You can give me the Les Paul sound of Slash, Jimmy Page and Gary Moore, but no one have that same unique Les Paul sound as Mark Knopfler, witch I just love!!!
Mark is one of the best songwriters of our time. My songs have been strongly influenced by his style. If you like, click "MrAlvarda" down below and check out my songs. "Turn around", "Train of life" or "Corporate World" are very close to his music.
One of a kind this guy, when they made him, they broke the mould afterwards, suberb, unique sound, Mark's Strat playing style has never been emulated since, some have tried, but just can't seem to get it right, superb player, love his music, always will.
@andreberna90 This video is non-live solos only (read the description). But check out my other video, Mark Knopfler's Best Guitar Riffs, for Sultans Alchemy version.
I love Sultans of swing but hand's down tunnel of love is MK's best performance IMHO. There is so much Emotion that comes from his fingers it is incredible. The live version is even more emotional and EPIC!!
i'd give sultans of swing #1 simply due to it being a classic, but let's be real here: tunnel of love should've been #2. the buildup is epic and the entire solo is just pure amazing and pure knopfler. that lick at 3:07 (in this video) gets me every time... so technically proficient yet insanely beautiful and touching at the same time
@Knutty4Knopfler Not everyone has the gift of a multilingual education. I respect anyone's right to speak in their own language, I was merely suggesting that if he really wanted to be understood by the poster of this video, then perhaps he would be better off speaking in English.
This is just my own personal, correct opinion, but I think the Sultans of Swing solo is the greatest of all time......bar none. The man is a subtle genius........
This top 10 is truly amazing, but my personal favourite is the one from "Where Do You Think You're Going". Not that I don't love the others, it's just a matter of personal taste. Anyway - great studio solos. Live, as some said - impossible to choose. So many great pieces of work!

the best solo is tunnel of love at the end ,after that sultans of swing live in sydney, then the so far away lookslike the tropical thing, ride across the river live at the end is a little part ,beautifull played, silvertown blues (really not so easy to play)
@vfender21 There is, on the "On the night" album, i think. Though I may be wrong, Im no expert when it comes to music lingo. Riffs, solos,.....etc, Whatever, just play th song =)

I always liked Mark Knopfler's songs. He paints pictures with words.
Images flood your mind.
He is one of the best, if not THE BEST guitarist/songwriter in the world today!
End of discussion.
He writes all of his own music.
He is a multi-talented Master of Music!
I absolutely love this guy, plus I think he's cute, too!
God broke the mold when he made Mark Knopfler.
There will never be another one like him.
I just hope his sons' carry on their father's legacy, and maybe follow in his footsteps!!!

the best solo is tunnel of love at the end ,after that sultans of swing live in sydney, then the so far away lookslike the tropical thing, ride across the river live at the end is a little part ,beautifull played, silvertown blues (really not so easy to play)

I love how all of his solos are equally touching the soul.

I love all Knopflers music, however I've always loved the solo in "punish the monkey" on the "Kill to Get Crimson" Album =)
