This last broadcast is incredible if you imagine what this man and the country have been through at that point in time. He was American born, his mother a protestant and his father an Irish Catholic. His family moved to Ireland a few years after his birth. Despite being a Catholic, he and his father were both Unionists, William having said that he supported the Black and Tans during the Irish war of independence. In 1921 he left for England where he had relatives in Merseyside. He later went on to gain British citizenship, which he later renounced apon being granted German citizenship.
