i am making one of these for my physics class. it will be used to throw water balloons 30m+. anybody have any suggestions on how big to make it? (obviously not this big....)
this video is screwed up - its taken from the maker (i saw his vid first b4 this one), its not a catapult its a trebuchet, and he didnt shoot the car to kill it....he was making a hole for the rope....
they haven't optimized the release. It looks like it released late. I built a much smaller trebuchet designed to toss water balloons. After some tinkering it would hurl a water balloon downrange at a pretty good clip.
dude, it comes under the same category. Just like, ballista amd the onager. both types of catapults, just different maechanisms, but both have the same purpose. throw things... hehehehe ;)
Here is what I got from google about the difference between them :
"Catapults are any device that throws an object, although it commonly refers to the medieval siege weapon.
Trebuchets are a TYPE of catapult, using gravity (with a counterweight) or traction (men pulling down), to propel the arm and often employing a sling at the end of the arm for greater distance. This is different from other catapults in that it doesn't use built up tension for it's throwing force."
1. A military machine for hurling missiles, such as large stones or spears, used in ancient and medieval times.
Catapult:
A catapult is any one of a number of non-handheld mechanical devices used to throw a projectile a great distance without the aid of an explosive substance—particularly various types of ancient and medieval siege engines.
No disrespect to your attempt, but a child could have been more accurate.
You might want to reference a respectable authority, such as the Cambridge, Oxford, Macmillian or even Collins. Alternatively, you could search Google for 'difference between catapult and trebuchet' to learn both the physics and historical use of these weapons.
I'm sure the 114,000 web pages returned from such a search will interest you greatly.
I do know the difference between a catapult and a trebuchet, and that they are two different machines.
But what I am saying is based on the vague and several definitions of a catapult. One being the specific machine itself, and others describing a general machine that hurls objects.
Since trebuchets hurl objects, it would fall as a type of catapult (under one definition of a catapult).
Googling "catapult definition" would give several results providing several definitions.
nope tribuchets are different from catapults a catapult ataches with a rope to it self with a bucket like thing on it a trebutchet has a rope attached to what it is fliinging

Don't worry about all the uninformed people crying "its called a trebuchet!" and especially people like 'SaurOnurb', who no nothing, because really, a Trebuchet is actually a type of catapult.

oo lookie a new time of extreme ride for the kids! I believe I saw this clip on that TV show Scrapheap where they eventually got 2 teams to build some 2 catapults of this sort and launch some cars to see witch team's machine is better
A trebuchet differs from a catapult because of its launching method. If you watch one, you'll notice the trebuchet uses a weight system that swings which is what enables the flinging of the object. A catapult simply launches the object into the air using the system of a spring. Its kind of like launching cereal with a spoon. The trebuchet launches it slower, but can create more force because of the counterweight.
A trebuchet is actually a subclass of catapult. The treb uses gravity and the cat uses stored energy. The stored energy doesn't have to be from a spring, i.e. hydraulics or rope. Also the treb's weight doesn't have to swing, i.e. ASOKs and FATs.

Will everybody shut up about explaining the differences about trebuchets ?
Everyone is writing it when it's already been said 1000 times! Read the description if your so smart.

Trebuchet use centrifugal force to and are a siege weapon.
Catapults use tension and are an assault weapon.
They function differently and are used for different purposes.

You mistakenly wrote 'All trebuchets are catapults' and puzzlingly gave descriptions of two kinds of catapult without sources.
Do feel free to rearticulate yourself.

Lol!
We've made a trebuchet today at the scouts, and the biggest thing we've thrown away was a bicycle =D
It flew about 15 meters, wich is, I think, pretty far for a trebuchet made of only rope and wood, and built in 4 hours.
Too bad our supporting bar broke :( so we couldn't launch any burning objects :p
