  • I must have been making my scratter (also on YouTube) about the same time as you. I started in just the same way. I used 20mm oak boards and laminated them at 90 degrees with stainless screws embedded too. the final drum was 250 x 250mm. My mistake was to use too many screws on the face of the drum so I have to press the apples down onto the drum for fast operation. Three seasons old now and it's ground a few tonnes. Maybe I'll make a press next...

  • @sciencejunk, your idea of using screws to hold the bits together was a good one. I like the 4hp petrol engine. wow. I was quite proud of mine this year. If we were continuously running and could feed it fast enough it would have done the whole 1.7tons is about 2 hours. Problem is with 2 people we cant wash them fast enough! the gap is now down to about 5mm as we increased the thickness of the stainless grinding plate again for the third time running. its reached its limit really.
