  • it´s a shame that everyone goes digital nowadays i still like cassette tapes better

  • i've ordered a 1042....i've had vdh's i've had an oc9 at, that was aweful, i've had a linn arkiv...looking forward to having some naturalness and warmth back in my system..right now i use a denon dl304..so bright i'm unable to play my records...my arcam cd player is far better

  • wow one of the best record deck sounds i ever heard on you tube. i had a 1042 many years ago..i've had expensive mc's and had enough of the brightness they introduce..very close to buying one these goldrings for my gyro sme series v arm combo...

very very nice sound there u got dude

  • @camelbreathkid I think the Series V might just be slightly out of this cartridge's league!!! It craves for something better, but I don't know what, an Ortofon Cadenza Black maybe. That has none of the harshness of other MC's. Also it depends what you call expensive. MC's under £1000 are what the hi-fi press label as cheap for an MC and yes the treble on these is often unruly. Above that price, you get smoothness, detail and heft. Apparently!

  • this sounds amazing!

  • @ashleycox432 Thanks

  • hi my friend i want to ask you a question about the goldring and all goldring cartridges in general

are they smooth and detalied sounding?

because i'm looking for a good cartridge under 200 euros if it's possible i was towards an audio technica at120e but some reviewers say it sounds too birght the opposite that i want and i was wondering if any goldring will suit me i've heard very good things of this brand and the 6.5 mv of output is convenient to me because of the volume thanks

  • i've got to look into these Goldrings.that sounded great.

  • So when you say the Goldring is like night and day with the 2M Blue, what does that mean? What jumps out at you? Did you like the 2M Blue? I'm just curious to hear your impressions, since I'm getting the itch for a new phono cart, and I've had my (excellent) 2M Blue for a full year.

I loved the sound of this recording. Even with the stupid Youtube compression routines, this sounded really great.

  • @gamesDAMNED I answer this question on my Hi Fi 101 Part 6 video which is just uploading now.

  • may I ask how you record your records?? is it directly from lineout??

  • Nice, I love this album. Can you do a vid of Billie Jean playing. Only if you have the time.

    Cheers,

    Shane.

  • OK. I got a vinyl BAD the other day. I remember when I first got it on tape feeling a bit disappointed in the lack of low frequencies and how clangy the biscuit (cookie!) tins that passed for drums sounded. So Thriller is a better recorded album. I will see what I can do.

  • Avoid accessorizing redundantly with dear audio products. Especially the intangible benefits that girt the equipment! Satisfy yourself with the sound you have - this is my opinion. My Realistic LAB-395 is loaded with an Ortofon OMB-10. The transduced signal brings happiness!

  • I agree about overly dear hifi. But this has to be within the context of the system. I upgraded my cartridge because the P5 is capable of much better. The 1042 is by no means considered expensive in hi fi circles eg the Ortofon Cadenzas are over £1k each. But the P5 & the rest of the system wouldn't get the best out of those. The sound, in-room is like night & day compared with the 2M Blue I had. It's true that budget systems can sound amazing but that doesn't mean it's not worth upgrading.

  • Another Great Record Transfer, New Cartridge Plays Very Well. Superb Quality! Thanks for posting.

  • what a beautiful sound reproduction! This is the type of sound quality that will actually convince my hard core digital co-workers that vinyl is actually better quality. Being younger electronics salesman they have never really heard what good vinyl sounds like! I don't have a copy of thriller, but you were not kidding; this record is L-O-U-D!

  • Actually MJ cried when this album was first mastered for LP, because they had obviously gone for a far bigger sound. If they'd released it as a double LP, they'd have been able to get that sound I believe. But as it was it necessitated an 8 day remix session in order to get an acceptable vinyl master. Funnily enough the original CD and cassette supposedly have better mastering than the LP.

  • And apparently there are 2 different original CD masterings of Thriller, a bit like the Polar/Polydor issue with the first 3 ABBA albums on CD! (Plus later, loud remasters of course)

I must say that, even with crap YT compression, the sound is unbelievably clear and defined. Before it was clear, but in comparison, it is in a clarity all on its own.

  • Before referring to your 2M Blue transfers!

  • The "far bigger sound" was achievable on the twelve-inch special dance mix because the grooves are cut wider.

  • Great sound quality, well done, I agreed with jedw a bit pricey, but you can hear the results, very good as well the copy.

    Cheers.

  • Thanks Jed! This copy of Thriller cost me enough, but as you say, it is excellent, and in no need of cleaning.

  • Hey great sounding cartridge, bit pricey for me, but I always say, a setup is only as good as the record you play on it. This copy of thriller sounds great especially as this is the innermost track.
