actually, according to the NASA consultants that the Babylon 5 writers talked with, if there were an explosion in space, say from a small craft, the mass of that explosion would burn until all the oxygen inside was depleted, and the gases would expand outward, carrying the sound with it, and once that gas expanded to the point of colliding with the hull of a ship you were inside, you would hear the sound of the explosion, so the fire would last for a split second, and it wouldnt look the same

Sure there would, if the fighters were combusting and producing gas then there would be the smoke you see. Not all space is empty eh.
