He is free to believe in a God if so he desires.
Rationally and scientifically it's obvious that there is no old guy with a beard in the sky who destroys "wicked people." However there is far more depth to religion/belief in God than such a childish view. Rationally speaking, we know nothing, so it can be argued that it's rather illogical to dismiss absolutely everything. For in a sense, doing so is an extreme on one side of the spectrum, with blind faith being an extreme on the other.
