  • Who's going to see Jobriath AD next year?

  • He died of Aids because he was a fag prostitute... Anyone who calls themselves a true fairy deserves everything they get. Half of NYC died during the 80s lol

  • Is the footage of him at a young age with the cast of Hair? I noticed Ted Lange in the background. This story is just so sad. The industry really does eat some people alive.

  • Wow, what a beautiful man in his rock days.

  • Saying he didn't succeed because he was gay is total bullshit. Lou Reed openly dated a tranny for YEARS in the 70s! Thing is, Lou Reed had talent.

  • This guy actually deserved the hype, unlike most of today's so called stars.

  • Aww that's so sad. A movie should be made about him and this situation.

  • rock on jo.

  • Yo, Signorile...stop talking about Jobriath if you can't say his freakin' name.

  • what song is it playing at 1:26?

  • @BackPorchPoet4

    "I'maman"

  • @BackPorchPoet4 It is his song, "I am a man". It is on youtube.

  • I'm not at all sure it's fair to say Jobraith imploded because rock audiences couldn't handle the gayness. I think, instead, it was because he was over-hyped beyond belief and the expectations were set too high for any mortal--or fairy--to ever achieve. In particular his record company saying he was better than Bowie was a sure-fire way to get people pissed off before the first note was even heard. If he'd been allowed to develop organically, playing clubs, etc, the story would be different.

  • I agree with you and i think it's sad that when someone voices an honest opinion they get smacked down.

  • Wasn't he really nice looking with out all the slap and camp?

  • There needs to be a full documentry about this.........

  • @whitewitchoz

they are making one but they are poor so there is a website to make donations

  • Velvet Goldmine totally makes sense now.

  • I was just thinking the same thing - Velvet Goldmine is one of my favorite films (and soundtracks) of all time - but now you can see how the "Jack Fairy" ghost of Jobriath informs every frame, even if Todd Haynes won't admit being inspired by his persona.

  • Funny how much he looks like Joe Elliott of Def Leppard in those studio shots. Especially considering Elliott counts Jobriath as an early musical influence, and that Def Leppard covered a Jobriath song on the expanded version of their "Yeah!" covers project.

  • It should be mentioned that Steve Sprouse was just a kid - a teenager - when he designed the costumes for JB.

  • that's COOL.

  • Isn't it? He started working for Halston when he was only 14.

  • I love this video for the footage at the end, which captures his *spirit* in a very nice way. He was a lovely human being.

The only thing that bothers me is that it fails to mention that he was under contract with Jerry Brandt and unable to use the name Jobriath professionally for ten years. It wasn't simply a matter of choice. Jerry Brandt is the reason that Jobriath's career failed. It certainly wasn't due to any lack of talent on his part.

  • @strangeparty

It's especially painful that Jobriath died around the same time his ten-year contract expired. I'm sure he'd have made one hell of a comeback. The guy had spectacular talent.

  • That's heart-breaking... and disgusting. How fast times moved in the '70s, but not fast enough for him. His music needs a comeback- a LOUD one.

  • gay as a marketing strategy?....probably not..lol

  • Jobriath's career ended not because he was gay, but because he was a no-talent, Mick Jagger/David Bowie rip-off.

  • I respectfully disagree. I have bought the Japanese Reissue of the Jobriath Debut and the

second album is on its way.

I would say that this album is a

fine one. The record is full of science fiction references and the

theatricality of Bowie -- with an even more blatantly "gay" edge to

it. The musicianship is top notch. The songs are inventive and

    never boring. If you like

the Smiths, Suede, T-Rex, Roxy Music, Bowie, New

York Dolls or any fey-leaning Rock, Jobriath

in your collection is a must.

  • Thank you for posting. I am his huge fan.

    Miss him. R.I.P.

  • Jobriath will one day get his due.

  • He was flamingggggggggg

  • You have a flair for the obvious.

  • so many years ago i got the album

    nowadays still strong

  • Thanks for putting this up. I watch it every now and then because I love their footage of him in the studio. The woman who made this doc is a sweetheart - really nice.

  • amazing....

  • What the fuck does MICHAEL SIGNORILE know about JOBRIATH??? He can't even pronounce his name! What a joke.

(but thanx for posting it anyway)

  • yeah seriously.... i bet if he could've outed him he would've learned his name. I've loved Jobriath since I was 13. It's nice to see and hear him again.

  • thanks for posting! there really needs to be more docs on this brilliant man!
