Zack and Aeris' relationship "was" canon because it was an official relationship. Cloud and Tifa's was not because it has never been an official relationship. It seems that square wanted to increase the love triangle even more during 'Maiden who travels the planet' when Aeris said she loved Cloud more than Zack. Now its up to Cloud to finally choose.

Thats your opinion and its not "watch" its "play crisis core" though I doubt it will change most Clerith's minds. Aerith says herself they werent serious and Zack was a ladies man. Zack was the only guy who had ever noticed her in that way. At 17 and experiencing that for the first time its more infatuation than love, which Aerith realises later on. Aerith probably doesnt get any guys in the end, which is a shame.
