nothing like two good, no scratch that..., GREAT cars racing for once. You get tired of little, suped up japanese cars racing. Give it up for good old fashioned, American engineering!!!
When I was a kid my dad had as 1957 Buick Special with a 364 engine and dual exhaust that came through the bumper on each side. It was his daily driver and the family car. I remember that thing had a wicked lope when it would be at idle. It was all stock. I think it was rated at 300 hp and it ran like a muscle car. It would light the tires up as long as you would hold your foot on the gas. That car made me a life long Buick lover.
You can't beat a Nailhead! (Buick pun) Those were good running engines. I know this old guy who put a 364 in his old Chevy pickup after he blew up 2-3 327's. He did that in the mid '70's. That stupid motor still runs good, 200k mi. later...
I wish I had a 1959 Cadillac one of the best looking cars of all time! Todays cars I don't like most of them, there just boring front wheel drive, 4 cylinders, with like no leg room, but most of the sports cars are cool, I guess they stopped making good looking cars because they were gas guzzler's but today's SUV's are, at least until gas was like 4$ so now everything is boring almost (like the Prius) :-(
Well, 0.94$ per litre is normal price today. In Spain we're paying for a gasoline litre 1.67$. But if you travel around Europe, litre prices are much higher than Spain with difference.
This is a bogus race if you ask me. The Cadillac, while more powerful, was a good 1000 pounds heavier. If they let them both go to 100 M.P.H., I'm sure the Cadillac would have prevailed.
Big cars of 60's & 70's- high reliable. Any engine before about 1960- 40k and you had to rebuild it. 80's on- get a Buick 3800. Look in the junkyard some time, ALL the 3800's have 200K+miles on them, unless somebody smashed the car.
I drove a 62 Ford Galaxie, from age 16 to 21, and that car never stalled, failed to start, or even had a flat. I never changed the oil, because I figured the car was worn out. I could not tear it up. The only way I could merit another car, was to ruin this car, but I could't. I drove it from Nashville to Goodlettsville, with the oil light on. After giving up trying to destroy the motor, I sold the car to a cop for 400.00.
1961 Buick is one of the most underrated GM cars ever. Set the styling trend for GM for most of the 60's. Was a good size but not fat. Nice V8. Elegant styling. My personal favorite GM car.
People knock the Dynaflow tranny, but drop it in low and tromp the go pedal absolutely to the floor (if you know the Dynaflow pitch setup, you know what I mean) and the Buick will scream out of the hole. Ahh the good old days.
Yea! The 70's through the early 00's was the great depression for cars! Especially 1978-2004. No style whatsoever. No chrome, no white-walls, no nice interier, just cheap plastic crap all around!
Yeah, then the "good" ones are re-badged (GMC's Tahoe & Yukon) to a Cadillac Escalade, and put with nifty leather on the inside, of course, all this could be yours for well over $50,000 .. and back then.. a Buick or any GM car that was the real-deal (Quality) costed under 8g? I guess we'll just wait till we see these old names come back
At least back before the 70's, especially in the late 40's and 50's, they tried to make the cheaper models look just as nice as the expensive ones. A 1957 Chevrolet is just as beautiful as a 1957 Cadillac. Now, those Chevrolet's, with the exception of the HRR, look like cheap plastic crap compared to the long, chromed Cadillacs. I also wish dog bowel hubcaps and whitewall tires would be offered on cars again.
True. Chevrolet is investing a lot of money into completely restyling their cars. Their plan is to make cars that will become classics by a modern design, not a retro one. Still, it wouldn't hurt to see fins again.
the real problem is that cars made in the last 20 years won't be around in another twenty years to become classic 'cause they'll rust away! And if any survive, they're too damn complicated to fool around with anyway if you're an average weekend mechanic! I'll stick with my '46 GMC!
I couldn't agree with you more. Starting back in the late 70's they started making the bodies out of thinner and lighter sheets of steel, which, unlike today, were not coated with rust-proof coating. Older cars last longer because even if they have rusted completely, there is still plenty of "car" left to restore.
That is a common misconception, I dare you to find any car built befor 1985 that will reliably go 250,000 miles without some sort of engine rebuild. I prefer working on vintage iron (I own a '65 230sl), but cars back then did not have anywhere near the reliablility that we now take for granted.
You own a 65 230SL, so you ought to know that many MBs built up until the late 80s/early 90s, esp. diesels, could go well beyond 250k mi without rebuilds.
That's because you have a genuine Olds engine - makes a huge difference. That is why people who put high miles on a car would buy an Olds over one of it's GM sister cars - for that durable engine. Remember the trouble GM got into when they dropped Chevy 350s into mid-70s Delta 88s without telling the customer? You got a large settlement or a real Olds 350 engine, your choice.
General upkeep is the best way to maintain a healthy motor. I have an 85 Honda CRX 1342cc with 359,000+ original engine miles. Nothing can be better for the motor than fresh oil every 3k.
Name a car built before 1975 that, with proper upkeep, will NOT go more than 150k. Just change the oil and plugs etc. and an older American car is just about unbreakable.
My uncle has a 78 Chevy 1/2 ton p/u truck with the original 350ci gas motor with 550,000+ miles to this day still runs nice, it even has good 170 straight across compression.
I got a bug with 190k on it, when I bought it there was half a qaurt of chunkey oil in it, and its still running like new. It starts right up on the coldest days :]
There was a time when gas was sheaper than water.. hundreds of chevy 350 engines on the cottonfields pumping water for the plants to grow (on high RPM) :D
Is your Buick a LeSabre or an Invicta? if it's a LeSabre, which engine does it have (364 2 or 4 barrel, low or high compression?). A friend of mine has a '59 DeVille flat top, maybe I should try the same with his DeVille and my '65 Wildcat!
antique cars rule today's cars can't stand a chance against them! one question when you stopped taping the cars when they were racing did any of them crash?
haha of course the Buick wins think about how much more car the Caddy is Pulling along, Beautiful cars though, i have a 77 Eldorado and its slow as molases, but who cares thats not what its meant to do!
