  • merry me

  • I think this is a great message. As someone who has been in a couple of comps (albeit not flute, I only started flute last week but have been playing keyboards for a few years) it is a real disappointment when you don't get the result you would have liked because it feels like all the prep for it was a waste of time. We have loads of music reality shows here in the UK and I think it has a knock-on effect on everyone else. But essentially we are all celebrating the same thing, not competing.

  • Excellent vlog on a fascinating topic. Most of the benefits you describe are not specific to competition though. The same benefits might be gained just as easily through simple performance, without the need to manufacture winners and losers. What is it specifically about creating a situation that will divide people that makes competition worth it? If, according to that old speech you didn't give, there are really no losers, then why create them at all?

  • lol loved the vid

could you check my channel? if you like my vids you should subscribe.

have a nice day and keep doiing what your doing.

    rock on!

  • This woman similars as like Enya

  • lol. flute reality show

  • I wish I had a mentor like you. Thanks for making the connection on youtube. I have benefit a lot from your masterclass videos.

  • it depends on your personality. if losing is going to knock you down so hard that you can't get back up, then maybe a competition is not for you. for the type A personality it may be the thing. i'm a reformed type A. i prefer clinics, sessions, and festivals. it's the same thing, but in a more nurturing setting. even a studio class setting can be competitive although there is no prize. in the end being satisfied is what matters. the type A's will always be in competition mode, even at a clinic.

  • I fully agree with your points of view....competition is healthy if you see it as a healthy challenge.

  • Well, all put the negative comment on there although im happy about other things in life. But I swear if music makes you happy and your a musician and you want to give it your all then go ahead and give your all. You don't need to be motivated by entering a competition just your inner voice telling you need to improve in these areas. Cause i swear there to many teachers that are musicians that wouldnt care if you had the passion for music they just want technique technique and that all.

  • if your name were Nina Perlova, I would assume that your parents are from Russia

  • I'm so far from music and art, but it was a pleasure for me listening to you ;-) You are very smart and attractive.

  • I completely agree with all that you have said. Creativity is the reason why music is so great: unlike in sports, there is no clear winner and loser, but each contestant gains something because they have prepared themselves by making an effort in practicing.

  • I love copetitions. I always loose but its so fun trying!

  • I agree with all of the reasons you have listed that competitions are healthy. The Youtube contest is definitely giving a lot to me and the Youtube community. It is giving us an opportunity share our music with everyone, which I probably wouldn't have done without an incentive like this contest. And, after doing this and enjoying using Youtube to share my music, I'll definitely continue doing it afterwards. Plus, the guaranteed free flute kinda rocks ;-D.

  • I think that competitions are healthy for performers if they do them with positive attitudes.

To me, winning would be nice, but the bigger reward is getting comment sheets back, and getting constructive criticism from flutists besides your own private teacher.

Yes, people should do competitions to win, but keep in mind that the comments the professional judges give you are what help you become a better player.

  • Your videos are so helpful.

And I agree, most people believe that every competition they don't win was unfair, but most aren't. It's still a little sad when we enter competitions and work our butts off preparing our repertoire and don't win. But we do learn a lot, and it feels even better when we win 1st 2nd or 3rd place.

  • Very good But tis flautists not flutists

  • As a Flutist myself, and also a knowledged person, it's is both flautist and flutist.

  • wow your a smart cookie ahha il have to remember that when i try out for Scicts stock (local music preformance) great advice :)

  • Are you married?

  • There is a reason why the musicians in an orchestra are given first chair or hidden behind the tuba player where hopefully they wont be heard. Please keep in mind that the last time I played in a band was in a seventh grade public school. I'm sure things get better at a college level or the tuba is at least replaced by two french horns.

  • I've never heard such an ugly sound from flute as comes from the Beat Boxing flutist. Horrible sound; and he's to be a judge? That's just sad.

There is no such thing as a fair competition; it's always inherently flawed and mostly a waste of time. Music should be be an art and real artists should have their own standards; how can one have a contest if there are a variety of artists?

  • Rexicano:

I actually like the flute beatboxer and would be interested to learn to beatbox...something out of my comfort zone.

  • For expressive non trad playing I like Rashaan Roland Kirk and Ian Anderson in early Jethro Tull. Even Eric Dolphy is nice with his breathy tone but the intonation sometimes rubs me the wrong way.

  • Roland Kirk is GREAT and Ian, too.

  • interesting...have you ever thought about doing a vlog on auditioning?

  • ditto, auditioning advice is good for us, I always lose in auditions, don't know why.

  • I agree! I'm terrible at auditions! Also, what about the pros and cons of the use of beta blockers during auditions.

  • with Youtube, we musicians are no longer lonely anymore, we can upload our practice videos to share with others, we now practice for a new purpose - to show off on youtube, to perform on youtube stage, to get professional's advice and comments, and to COMPETE striving for the best.

  • YOUTUBE itself is a worldwide competition arena, people played their best and then upload to here, then let the worldwide audience and fellow musicians or instrumentalists to enjoy it, share it, judge it, rate it, critize it, it is some of Grand Competition! We learn from the others and learn our weakness from comments or critisism.

  • There are many hypocrits out there talked down about competitions but at the same time they claimed they had so many prize winning students. Life IS a competition!

  • I agree with you totally Nina, everybody likes competition, it is an incentive or motivation or a GOAL, people come out and express themselves - their passion and their loneliness as musician during the competitions to their fellow musicians, make friends and learn from others and know you own weaknesses. I am a competition boy, I win and lose all the time, and I learn much more and I work even harder when I lose, now I love to lose, LOL.

  • "enter a competition to win, committed to put in the effort to win": All the benefits that you speak of for non-winners are worthy reasons for people, who are not in the "winner" class, to enter competitions.

For some the statement suggests lying to oneself. If the person knows it is a lie, they will not be motivated to work hard to achieve the lie.

(Unless you are suggesting not to enter unless a person has a strong chance of winning?)

  • now all we need is a tuba competition!!!

  • nice one

  • So... is this a high school competition? or, are there no age limit?

  • I don't know if anyone has told you this yet...

    But, you are truly talented,

    and ALSO, uniquely beautiful ;)

Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • you can say that again

  • I think really fair competitions will never exist, but competition is good as performing is necessary in music.

One should not take music competitions too serious, but maybe that is easier said than done ;-)

All what you say I can agree.

When I play for myself, I think it is like a competition, the every-day-practsising-performance.

And if I am the only one in the audience, that is no problem, for me. ;-) ;-) ;-)

    Thanks, Nina.

  • Thank you for posting this.

Every music making should be a performance.

    Ask Stockhausen for more info.

    C. S.

  • "Every music making should be a performance."

    nice words.

Are you a student of Stockhausen?

    Greetings, lietzen

  • I like to join the Youtube Contest division II, for age 13 and over foreign people, I am just 13 now, yay! But I don't have any 'creative' pieces, what can I do? Should I change my classical flute piece into Jazz version or blues version? Time is short - 18 days left before round 1 submission.

  • flutelearner12: be creative, think outside the box, and I look forward to seeing your submission!
