"Oceans playing catch-up"? What crap!! The atmospheric CO2 levels FOLLOW the oceans. And who says the earth is more fragile than humans? Humans, animals and plantlife alike are ALL extraordinarily adaptable, and in very short timescales. Also, CO2 life/decay time in the atmosphere is NOT in the hundreds of years, but in the vast majority studies, it's between 5 & 15 years - only the IPCC chose to select a study figure that was greater than 100 years. Crisis? What crisis!
@TheTempestSpark Yea, I can't believe she said that. The earth is the most complex and adaptive system known to man. It will survive past any other living thing on it.
@slytown Missing the point much? The biosphere does appear to have survived worse things than homo sapiens, but its individual components come and go. Unfortunately we're one of those individual components. You think a massive shock to the ecosystem's gonna be fun?
@Chronosaur The point of her speech is rhetorical spouting of the credo to the early 21st century environmental movement. There's a difference between discovering global warming and understanding what causes it. She obviously has not investigated the latter, beyond the fact that her language is incorrect. If she's going to make a statement at a respected debate, she can't muck up something like saying "The earth is much more fragile than the body."
@Chronosaur To a certain extent, yea, in addition to her statements. Investing in renewable energy just makes sense in certain regions and we need to adapt, but the "signs" of our impact on the biosphere is just too disconnected. If we are to make those changes in our habitation/consumption, then it is much better to understand what we are dealing with than pump all of our resources into dropping CO2 (which is fairly nonsensical) and increasing nuclear power (ridiculous.)
Craaaaaaaaaaaaaap. Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. Brenda want a cracker. I heard no discussion of actual atmospheric science or climate studies. Just a bunch of fear mongering trash. OH NO NOT THE CHILDREN. why does she describe the consequences of carbon emissions if she is in fact right instead of explaining why she is right? maybe she should consider the national credit cards that will have to be taken out by the children of poor nations when the emissions tax comes into action.
Extinctions? Total Crap. The earth has been a lot hotter than it is today, and the species that are here today SOMEHOW survived the experience. That includes polar bears as well. What a load of crap.
Ahem...the species that are here TODAY. Plenty of other species became extinct along the way. And some continue to do so. Old comments, I know, but worth responding to.
Temperature changes are not going to cause massive extinctions.
How do we know that?
Answer: The earth has been through massive fluctuations in termperature, much greater than the ones we've seen to date. The species that are with us today are the SURVIVORS of temperature fluctuations.
example: If the polar bears can't handle iceless environs, they'd have all died 10K+ years ago.
this woman is an idiot!!!!! even if we did face a climate crisis, Orwellian mandates to encourage alternatives will not bring about an efficient solution. only market forces will bring about change and govt must therefore stop manipulating market forces with oil exploration subsidies, alternatives subsidies, coal subsidies etc
@1337bard neither did the opposing side prove their arguments with actual data. If you're concerned about a lack of sufficient data, then I recommend you consult the swaths of peer-reviewed scientific papers confirming what Dr. Ekwurzel is claiming rather than consulting this unscientific debate. I used to work with Dr. Ekwurzel and can vouch for her as a top rate scientist. If you need help locating peer-reviewed scientific literature, let me now
@1337bard You obviously are unaware of the fact that 'scientific theory' is not the same as a normal theory. In fact, a scientific theory is made up of lots of individual scientific facts and thus has much more weight than one single scientific fact.
So we have 6 degrees before we die?AND we for sure are causing it? I'm not going to believe someone becuase a bunch of people believe it OR Else I'd be a christian.
This woman is not thinking clearly. All temperatures are local, not global. The earth does not and cannot have a fever. 100degrees in Illinois will not melt ice in Antartica. When it's summer in the Northern Hempisphere, it's winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
My husband is a chemist, and he says that water vapor is a big absorber of infrared (heat) rays. As the atmosphere gets warmer, the air will get warmer yet. Clouds (bigger droplets) reflect heat well, but invisible humidity absorbs heat better than carbon dioxide. Scary.
As an Architect: its absolutely relative - and whimsical- about what is "sustainable" to buildings. Longevity Vs Replaceability is a good example: Concrete has a massive energy consumption through man hours and transportation, but lasts a long time. Wood is renewable, but its upkeep is laborious. Glass lets light in, but costly to produce, is the #1 location for heat gain, etc etc. In the end, its all bureaucratic and political, and hardly scientific.
My little sister has grown about 4 inches over the past year (she is ten). If she continues to grow at this rate, she will be 8 feet tall by age twenty, and 12 feet tall by age thirty.
