This man is my absolute hero, I met him backstage in Australia and he is a lovely guy as well.and as far as comparisons between Townes and Steve they were too good a friends for that comparison to be appropriate. He is the most underated artist of his time in my opinion and I still perform about 20 of his songs with pride.
the movie is great, steve's song his best. man, they don't build outlaws like this guys anymore. however, Townes is even much more a great poet. god bless him and all the others. Heartworn Highways is a good starter for that scene that has gone, but is not forgotten.
@LongTallYamlaJay . don't think that was a comparison to their "poet" as much as it was to their "outlaw" and they were just saying that townes was more of a poet than an outlaw.. the only reason they would come up in the same sentence is this movie... no one in their right mind would compare steve's writing to Townes!!! thats just ridiculous.
This is my favorite song on Heartworn Highways by far. I'm pretty sure that's Guy Clark playing backup guitar with Steve Young. He really adds a lot to this song. I love the little piece he plays at 0:40. Clark never does it again, but it's one of the things that make this song so good, second of course to Steve Young's amazing singing. This is one of my favorite country songs ever. It encompasses both the beauty and the sorrow, the love and loneliness, and the truth of the south.
He reminds me of a mountain lion. You might get lucky enough to see his tracks but you'll never really see him unless you're at the right place and at the right time.
Steve Young, Rodney Crowell and Townes Van Zandt is some of Americas hidden treasures. but the truth is that Cash, Nelson and others woulden't have been if it wasn't for them. get those up there with Cash and al the others. and stop hide them.
Steve Young is the best singer country music ever produced-he should be treasured up there with Hank, Willie and Waylon! It is an honor to call him a friend! Larry Mangum
@blmangum I had never really heard Steve Young until by chance I heard him on Outlaw Country on Sirius Satellite Radio. Shooter Jennings has a show on there, and I had an artist alert set for the band Motorhead. Steve Young was played next, his cover of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. I was amazed. now a fan.
@benny5789 (exept for the motorhead alert) Exactly how I came to know of S Young, and ended up on This page because I was certain that Shooter gave credit to Young for writing The night they drove old dixie down, wish I could find youngs version. BTW Motorhead is now way up my list as well, 3:40 AM I should be asleepin, well just one more search M-O-T-O-R-H-E......
Hey Paul agree with you Sometimes I Dream is great..There's a curse on my heart. I'll never love again, is so heartfelt. when he sings that. can you imagine a Tim McGraw of Keith Urbakn doing this stuff, what a joke. I also liked Little Birdie. Can anyone tell me why the Rock Salt And Nails cd is so hard to get and costs 200. I have it on Lp(reissue) that Steve signed.
lord, lord, as many good musicians as there are out there that you've never heard of, steve young is one of the best. we used to go see and hear him in alabama honky tonks, really tough, mean, you can get killed road-houses, of the middle 1970's -- the era of his renegade picker stuff ("partly hippie, partly kicker").
Fantastic I saw him 20 years ago in a small venue in Bodmin England I now have almost every recording his "sometimes i dream" is my favorite I could go on, I love him.
this guy absolutely rock. I first heard him on his switchblades of love album he made in '93. That album quickly became one of my favorites ever. One of the greatest singer/songwriters of any generation or genre. Very underappreciated.
I never heard of Steve Young until I bought Heartworn Highway a few weks ago. I was immediately blown away by Steve Youngs voice, and guitar style. I love this song.
Steve Young is a very under rated picker. On "Honky Tonk Man" he does a cover of an old folk song called "Travelin' Man" that has some of the best flat picking you've ever heard and it's live.

@maldoror2007 I wonder what would make someone compare Townes with Steve to decide if one is a "greater poet."

There used to be lots of great country non commercial music, now you have to really look for it. And I do, everyday.
